A small tsunami reached the Pacific coast of northern Japan on Sunday after a strong quake hit the region heavily damaged by the March earthquake and tsunami, the Japan Meteorological Agency said.

The port town of Ofunato, Iwate prefecture, saw a 10-centimetre tsunami at 1144 AEST, the agency said.

The agency issued a tsunami advisory for Iwate, Miyagi, and Fukushima prefectures after a 7.1-magnitude earthquake struck off the main island of Honshu at 1057 AEST.

No damage has been reported from the tsunami and quake.

Television footage of the port in Ofunato did not show any visible sign of the tsunami, with the water surface seemingly calm and flat.

The agency issued the tsunami advisory shortly after the offshore quake in the same general area as the 9.0-magnitude quake of March 11 which triggered a massive tsunami.

The US Geological Agency, which also estimated the magnitude at 7.1, said the offshore quake hit at a depth of 10 kilometres.

Tokyo Electric Power Co (TEPCO) said it had not received reports of any fresh problems at the crippled Fukushima Daiichi nuclear plant after the latest earthquake.

"We are still checking details, but cooling of reactors is continuing," a TEPCO spokeswoman said.

But the company told work crews near the water to seek higher ground due to the tsunami advisory.

The Japanese weather agency expected a small tsunami of up to 50 cm along the affected region.

Communities along the Pacific coast issued warnings and advisories for local residents to seek higher ground but no damage had been reported shortly after the quake.

The March 11 and the tsunami left about 22,000 people dead or missing and triggered an atomic crisis at the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear plant.

The planet was in trouble?

When did this happen?

I follow LF religiously. And I've seen nothing. IS there a news page here somewhere?

100% certainty of Nuke Meltdown in the US.

100%

"The nuclear power plant at Fort Calhoun Nebraska was within feet of a 100 percent chance of meltdown, according to the Nuclear Regulatory Commission. The Cooper Nuclear Station, also on the Missouri River in Nebraska, was also surrounded by flood waters.

In the very same week, a wall of fire raged toward the Los Alamos National Weapons Lab - the nuclear weapons testing facility hosting many thousands of barrels of plutonium waste, old dumps, and the most dangerous nuclear materials on the planet.

A chorus of authorities said over and over, repeated like a mantra in every news report, that everything was completely safe. Just like the government did in Japan before and even after four nuclear reactors blew up and three melted down. It's always declared safe, until it isn't."

When water started to pour into the turbine building, again officials said that was nothing unexpected.

Funny, nobody predicted that.

The operators, Entergy - and we'll hear more about them soon - contested the NRC findings, and tried to avoid upgrading their flood protection. The NRC won that small battle, which may have so far saved the plant.
