A "mail-order bride" is a term often used to refer to a woman who joins a service that is designed to set her up with a man from another, generally more developed, country. The "mail-order" title refers to the fact that such women used to publish their personal details in catalogs that foreign men could look at. Today, however, a typical "mail-order bride" would go through an online matchmaking service.

Many mail-order brides come from countries such as Russia, the Philippines, and the Ukraine. These countries are fairly poor, and many women long for a better life in a more economically developed country, such as the United States, Canada, or Australia. The men who are interested in a mail-order bride are often relatively wealthy men who have been divorced, or have not had success with women in the past. In many cases, they decide to pursue a woman from a less developed country because they believe that such women will be submissive to them, as opposed to the more independent women from their home countries. They also frequently choose mail-order brides that are significantly younger, often by as much as 20 or 30 years.

Though in the past, a mail-order bride may have gone to marry a man that she had never met before, today, there is typically a courtship process involved. Normally, a man who is interested in finding a mail-order bride will buy a membership with one or more agencies that will allow him to meet and communicate with foreign women. He will then travel to the country where the agency is based, and meet with many of the women there. He can go on private dates with the women that he is interested in, and can even propose marriage. Women may be selective, and do not have to marry the first man who asks; however, many do, simply because they want to leave their homeland.

In recent years, several high-profile murder cases have drawn attention to the mail-order bride. In three separate cases in the United States in the last two decades, a mail-order bride was murdered by her husband. In another case in 2002, a mail-order bride was charged with poisoning her husband.

Such incidents have brought close scrutiny to the mail-order bride movement in the United States, and a law signed into action in 2006 called the "International Marriage Broker Regulation Act" imposes strict enforcements on a man who pursues a mail-order bride. For example, he must disclose his criminal and marital background, he will be checked for sex offenses, and the woman must agree to communicate with each specific man who wishes to contact her.

What is so complicated about this topic? No need to answer.

By the definitions you have posted, my wife was not, IS NOT a "mail-order bride."

The BS about "submissive" is a laugh, BTW.

Okay, you met her on one of your vacations. I'm sure that is the way it was.

Fred, this and the rest of your bold paragraph prove these women aren't mail order brides.

Okay, they're mail-order brides with some interactive foreplay...does that make you feel like you're correct?

I think the closest thing I've ever seen that I would consider (jmo) a 'mail order bride' was from the movie 'Naked Jungle'.

This man owned miles of property in the amazon, he was so busy that he had his brother in he states advertise for a wife. Questions were asked on both sides but as far as I know, there were no photo's of either. The groom himself was never involved in any this. When a bride was chosen (by his brother) there was a 'marriage by proxy' in the states, the groom was not present for this, he had a friend stand in for him. He never saw his wife until the day she showed up at his plantation.

Well, I've seen it several times in my life. Like I told Capitalist Erica, I'm happy his arrangement worked out. If it works out then it's great.

I didn't know this, good luck Eric. I think marriage is a gamble whether you knew each other before the wedding, or not, my husband and I knew each other for only 5 months before we married, 40yrs ago come Aug.

The only movie I have ever seen about this subject was "Sarah,Plain and Tall",and it was a good one. Glenn Close played the bride and I would recommend this movie to anybody looking for a good story told well.

THIS is what a mail-order bride was,and it was very common in the American west in the 19th century where you had a lot of men and damn few women. The brides mostly came from the cities back east where there were a lot of single and widow women living in bad circumstances with very little or no hope of a better life.

It usually worked out for both parties. Very few of the women were mistreated because women were so rare in the places where they went to marry and the men were so happy to have them and a family.

To be honest about it,this was a solution to some of the inbreeding that was becoming a problem in some areas, too.

Seems like I remember this as being a big part of Australia's history, too.

There are almost ZERO sites that meet your definition today (but there are a few). Most have been replaced with internet dating sites, no different than Match.com, which do not broker introductions.

Thanks. The cultural differences have made for some... *challenging* situations. Those cultural differences keep things very interesting, and after the kids are in bed each evening, we sit on the back patio for at least an hour, talking about anything at all... It's the best part of the day.

I think marriage is a gamble whether you knew each other before the wedding, or not, my husband and I knew each other for only 5 months before we married, 40yrs ago come Aug.

Great point. The ex and I dated for ~3 years before we got married. After three years of marriage, I couldn't tolerate her any more.

My wife and I met six years ago, we've been married for five. Two beautiful girls, and life is the best it has ever been for me.

Truth be known, my wife is most responsible for that... she's taught me a lot, changed my viewpoint on many things that I (like most Americans) simply took as a given... She's a very sharp lady, and woe to the person who makes the mistake of underestimating her... LOL.

:)
