COLUMBUS, Ohio (CGE) - Disgraced New York Democratic Congressman Anthony Weiner, who resigned after he was forced to due to actions that were clearly salacious and raunchy but not illegal, is yesterday's scandalicious news.

The new news that happened in April but surfaced this week, that Democrats and progressives will find too intoxicating to resist, that puts Ohio GOP House Speaker William Batchelder in a political and moral bind, is that one of the speaker's committee lieutenants, who chairs the State Government and Elections Committee, was arrested by Indiana police in the wee hours of the morning with Viagra and a lot of alcohol in his blood, and a woman, some think might be a stripper who was half his age and he wasn't related to, in his car, which may have been sporting questionable Kentucky license plates.

The Mecklenborg mess

The news of GOP Rep. Robert Mecklenborg's arrest hit Internet newsstands when Brian Hester, executive editor at Plunderbund, a progressive Democratic blog site that reports on Ohio politics, reported on public arrest records that identified Mecklenborg as the person who Hoosier police pulled over near the Burger King at the corner of Lorey Lane and US 50 in Lawrenceburg.

Included in the Dearborn County police arrest records was the name of a woman named Tiona Roberts, who some speculate may have been a stripper and was in the car when Mecklenborg, driving drunk, was taken into custody by local police. Mecklenborg, now in his third term, has been an outspoken advocate for abortion banning bills and is the sponsor of a controversial, some say illegal bill on voting, that mandates Ohio voters present an acceptable photo ID before voting.

Mecklenborg has a wife and three children. Mecklenborg is an attorney at Dinsmore & Shohl law firm and a former county prosecutor. He is a member of the Ohio and Cincinnati Bar Associations.

After business hours on Thursday, House communication staff sent via email a statement from Speaker Batchelder acknowledging the incident happened that also expressed concern for the dicey situation Mecklenborg has put him and others in.

Speaker Batchelder "shocked and disappointed"

“My friend and colleague Bob Mecklenborg is a dedicated public servant with an exemplary record of serving the people of Ohio and the 30th District. His contributions to the Ohio House have been vital to the work of this fine institution. “I was shocked and disappointed to learn of the difficult situation that Representative Mecklenborg and his family are facing. We are working with Representative Mecklenborg to find a solution that is in the best interests of the representative, his family and all concerned. I ask that members of the media and public respect the privacy of Rep. Mecklenborg and his
family at this time."

Responding his own statement on Batchelder's statement, Hester said, "On behalf of Plunderbund, we share the Speaker’s sympathies to the pain, embarrassment and humiliation that State Representative Mecklenborg’s wife, children, and the rest of his family may be suffering right now. However, this is not, as the Speaker suggested, a ‘situation’ that is happening.  This is something that is the direct consequence of the Representative’s alleged actions and behavior. If the Speaker and Representative Mecklenborg are having trouble determining who is to blame for this ‘difficult situation’ we would suggest providing Representative Mecklenborg with a mirror. He is to blame, not those who merely reported what was largely a matter of public record."

Hester takes on Batchelder

Hester wrote that he and others were shocked and disappointed that the Speaker of the House, a learned and respected jurist, would publicly suggest that Rep. Mecklenborg is entitled to privacy on facts that are a matter of both public concern and public record, in which there can be no expectation of privacy. Rep. Mecklenborg is accused of a crime, and he is a public figure, Hester said, standing by his reporting. "There is nothing harmful in reporting the truth."

“Given that the Speaker just permitted the passage of a bill that so interfered with every Ohio woman’s private reproductive rights so severely that even the Ohio Right-to-Life publicly stated it was likely to be declared an unconstitutional infringement on their privacy, the Speaker’s demand that public information about Representative Mecklenborg be kept private is insulting and hypocritical," Hester said, expressing what many Ohioans will want to know, namely, what the nature of the relationship Rep. Mecklenborg has to his publicly identified alleged victim, Tiona Roberts, "a woman who is not married to him, who the Representative appears to have no blood relationship to him, is almost half his age, and yet was a passenger in his vehicle when he was allegedly driving while intoxicated at nearly 3 a.m. on a Friday night in April in Indiana."

Dissecting Speaker Batchelder's missive on regret and consolation, Hester noted his surprised that the Speaker made no explicit mention of Rep. Mecklenborg’s constituents, who Hester said "have a right to know the full publicly available facts of the crime their elective representative is accused of committing so that they can intelligently determine whether he can, or should, continue to serve them."

Hester and others will press The House Majority Caucus to examine whether such allegations suggest that the current Chairman of the House Government and Ethics Committee has the moral authority and credibility to continue to chair the making of the State’s ethics and “good government” policies.  This requires public discussion of public facts, even uncomfortable and publicly known personal facts, Hester intoned.

Keeping such information private exposes elected officials to potential extortion and blackmail, Hester, an attorney noted. He followed the dictum that sunlight is the best disinfectant.  "We presented the facts. We leave it to his constituents to determine whether those facts are relevant in deciding whether he can continue to effectively serve and represent their communities. We report. They decide,” Hester concluded.

Watch the Ohio MSM

Whether members of Ohio's mainstream media have the lust to run Mecklenborg out of office like New York's manic media had in hounding former Democratic Congressman Anthony Weiner from office, after six terms, will be an issue to watch. The House and Senate are scheduled for a summer break, which allows Mecklenborg, who has yet to come forward with any public comments on the embarrassing situation, to not be in the public eye until the House takes up committee and session work again.

I couldn't agree more.

I just can't wait for some enterprising reporter to ask him if this all means the public has the right to see the acting presidents actual birth certificate, the various passports that have been issued to him,his school records that have been sealed, etc, etc, etc?
