A group of hackers broke into a Fox News Twitter account Monday and tweeted that President Barack Obama had been shot and killed. "BREAKING NEWS: President @BarackObama assassinated, 2 gunshot wounds have proved too much. It's a sad 4th for #america. #obamadead RIP," one tweet said.
The report is obviously false.
At the time of publication, Fox News did not appear to have regained control of the hacked @foxnewspolitics account.
A group that calls themselves The Script Kiddies took credit for the break-in on a Twitter account that has now been suspended.
"Fox news politics hacked by the scriptkiddies! http://t.co/6yZDcTS more embarrassment for FoxNews is imitate," they tweeted.
The group quickly set up a second Twitter account which has also been suspended.
The Script Kiddies group has no official affiliation with hacker groups Anonymous and LulzSec, but they did publicly support the LulzSec "AntiSec" campaign, according to The Next Web.
"I would consider us to be close in relation [to Anonymous], 2 of the members of our group were members of Anonymous," a person claiming to be a representative of The Script Kiddies told Think Magazine. "I was a member of Anonymous. We hope to be working with them soon."
"We are looking to find information about corporations to assist with antisec. Fox News was selected because we figured their security would be just as much of a joke as their reporting," the representative added.
