A lesbian marine in San Diego is expected to be jailed for up to one year after she and her girlfriend allegedly married male colleagues to claim $75,000 in married couple allowances.

Corporal Ashley Vice has been charged with conspiracy, making false official statements, fraud and adultery for allegedly marrying to qualify for financial assistance offered to heterosexual married couples.

Vice said that she married a straight colleague because she wanted to live off base with her civilian girlfriend but could not afford it.

Fellow marine Jeremiah Griffin agreed to marry her so that she could receive the $1,200 per month allowance offered by the military to married couples living off base.

A year and a half later, her girlfriend Jaime Murphy married another male marine, Joseph Garner.

The three marines are accused of taking about $75,000 in allowances.
Vice said she was questioned by the military about the living arrangements.

'I honestly didn't even try to hide it,' she told KGTV. 'I just said this is what's going on. They asked me who Jaime is ... I told them.'

'If I knew I was going to be facing a year of jail time, we would have probably found some other way,' she added.

Her girlfriend Miss Murphy said: 'There's no conspiracy here. There's no trying to steal from anybody.

'We just wanted to be together and she wanted to serve her country,' she told the location station.

They could also face a dishonourable discharge or a reduction in rank and forfeiture of all pay.

A marine spokesman at Camp Pendeleton told KGTV: 'The bottom line is that every Marine knows if they violate the law, they will be held accountable for their actions.

'Regardless of sexual preference, we will hold all Marines accountable to the same standards.'
