Title: Did Obama Forget Those Private Jet Tax Breaks He Just Denounced Were Created By His Own Stimulus Plan?

Before signing the stimulus bill (aka “Porkulus”) in February of 2009, White House Deputy Press Secretary Bill Burton said that, even though the president probably hadn’t read the entire 1,079 bill cover-to-cover, he knew it was okay to sign because he had “a team of the best legislative and economic experts in the country who advised him.”

Apparently Obama didn’t check with them before letting loose on private jet tax breaks at today’s press conference.

From the Heritage Foundation:

The chief economic culprit of President Obama’s Wednesday press conference was undoubtedly “corporate jets.” He mentioned them on at least six occasions, each time offering their owners as an example of a group that should be paying more in taxes.

“I think it’s only fair to ask an oil company or a corporate jet owner that has done so well,” the president stated at one point, “to give up that tax break that no other business enjoys.”

But the corporate jet tax break to which Obama was referring – called “accelerated depreciation,” and a popular Democratic foil of late – was created by his own stimulus package.

More background on that here.

“The stimulus is working as intended! Well, except for that part… and that part… and…”

Yes he did.

Dems had only 59 votes. Franken hadn't been seated yet.

The Senate then began consideration of the bill starting with the $275 billion tax provisions in the week of February 2, 2009.[11] A significant difference between the House version and the Senate version was the inclusion of a one-year extension of revisions to the alternative minimum tax which added $70 billion to the bill's total.

Republicans proposed several amendments to the bill directed at increasing the share of tax cuts and downsizing spending as well as decreasing the overall price.[12] President Obama and Senate Democrats hinted that they would be willing to compromise on Republican suggestions to increase infrastructure spending and to double the housing tax credit proposed from $7,500 to $15,000 and expand its application to all home buyers, not just first-time buyers.[13] Other considered amendments included the Freedom Act of 2009, an amendment proposed by Senate Finance Committee members Maria Cantwell (D) and Orrin Hatch (R) to include tax incentives for plug-in electric vehicles[14] and an amendment proposed by Jim DeMint (R) to remove language from the bill that would prohibit funds which would be "used for sectarian instruction, religious worship, or a school or department of divinity; or in which a substantial portion of the functions of the facilities are subsumed in a religious mission".[15]

The Senate called a special Saturday debate session for February 7 at the urging of President Obama. The Senate voted, 61-36 (with 2 not voting) on February 9 to end debate on the bill and advance it to the Senate floor to vote on the bill itself.[16] On February 10, the Senate voted 61-37 (with one not voting)[17] All the Democrats voted in favor, but only three Republicans voted in favor (Susan Collins, Olympia Snowe, and Arlen Specter), with Specter later switching to the Democratic party.[18] At one point, the Senate bill stood at $838 billion

Nothing there about Obama giving a concession of corporate jets. So, as usual, you're just making it up.

No Kansas Senator voted for the stimulus, douche.

You never answered the question, douche.

Why would a particular Senator have to vote FOR something that he knew was going to pass?

But to add further intrigue, why would he have to vote FOR something that had already existed for seven years.

For someone who worked in Washington you sure are stupid as to how it works.

Not only are you making things up, you are being stupid about it. You clearly stated that Obama signed the stimulus to appease Republicans (without any evidence of such). Then you tried to say he did it to coax Kansas Senators who never voted for it. In fact, the three GOP Senators who did sign it were Collins, Snow, and Spectre, who didn't need to be coaxed. Having made a dumbass of yourself over those arguments, you move on to "it was initiated 7 years earlier anyway.

Just admit you are FOS.

Either ping me to that post where I so stated or admit that you just outright lied.

A) What I stated was this: This was a GOP ornament that was put on to the stim Chirstmas Tree so that it could pass.

And this:

B) Yes he did[need GOP votes to get the stim passed].

Dems had only 59 votes. Franken hadn't been seated yet.

`````
In the case of "A", to avoid a filibuster the stim HAD to have "pet" programs either sustained, expanded or put in. Had Obama not agreed to such then the bill would have never gotten to - which brings us to "B" - CLOTURE which requires 60 votes. He needed GOP votes FOR CLOTURE. So, not only did he AGREE to keep those breaks he AGREED to have them folded into the accelerated depreciation schedule that the stim provided.
You look pretty odd calling me stupid when you look so dumb.
No wonder Ron Paul fired your ass.
I love giving you rope, Paddy...you always lynch yourself:
Republicans threaten to block Obama stimulus in Senate AGENCIES Feb 1, 2009, 08.31pm IST WASHINGTON: President Barack Obama's signature attempt to kick- start the stricken US economy risks running into a Republican wall in the Senate this week, a top opposition senator said Sunday.
Jon Kyl, the Republican's second-ranking Senate member, said the party would flex its muscles by stalling the 819-billion-dollar stimulus package without a fundamental rethink of the bill's mix of spending and tax cuts.
<"I think that we would all agree there will be a 60-vote requirement for the bill. That's the end result of a filibuster," he said on "Fox News Sunday," referring to a parliamentary tactic to drag out debate indefinitely.
The stim was negotiated with the GOP, Paddy. No matter how you try to spin, wriggle and bury yourself here, had any tax increase been put into this bill, it would have been filibustered.
BULLSHIT. That's the crux of the argument, douche. I posted the article in which Brownback defended the tax break on the jets. The break has existed since 2002.
BULLSHIT. That's the crux of the argument
Give one time in the article or in any my posts where anything about tax increases are discussed. The issue is Obama attacking coporate jet tax breaks now while gladly signing them into law.
Also, this:
Yes, Obama still owns the tax break for corporate jets
A few non-profit arms of the Obama administration -- namely Media Matters and the Center for American Progress -- have attacked the Heritage foundation for correctly pointing out that President Obama signed general this general aviation tax break into law through as part of his stimulus package.
The pedantic complaint is that Heritage's original post incorrectly implied that Obama had concocted the idea himself. In fact, he merely extended the accelerated depreciation provision for "corporate jets." But that doesn't change the fact that President Obama railed six times yesterday against a tax break that exists in law today because of his signature.
Heritage's Mike Gonzales has posted the official reply:
So, yes, obviously, if we could write it again, we would say “re-authorized” not “created.” To the writer over at Media Matters who said we should issue a “sweeping correction” we recommend switching to decaf. President Obama did create the Stimulus, which did include a tax break for the purchase of private jets. That failed bill only received three Republican congressional votes.
The jet tax provision is not a serious issue ($3 billion over ten years?), and Obama's repeated mention of it demonstrates he is not serious about deficit reduction. It just adds icing to the cake that it exists in law today only because of his signature.
And further, it is perhaps lost in this debate that Obama is attacking an industry that is one of the few remaining loci of American leadership in manufacturing. I don't like the idea of special treatment for any particular industry, but Obama, who has no qualms about corporatism, has been talking about promoting manufacturing. Well, what does he think this corporate jet subsidy was all about? Promoting manufacturing, of course. It's Obamanomics at work.
Stop being a stupid douchebag, Paddy. If the tax break for jets was eliminated - and in Jan of '09 it was discussed - in GOP think that's a tax hike and the bill would have been filbustered. Brownback, who is in Cessna's back pocket was very vocal about preserving the break and that he would fight any attempt to kill it.
The issue is Obama attacking coporate jet tax breaks now while gladly signing them into law.
The tax break came into being in 2002. He wasn't POTUS and thus could not have signed anything into law.
the bill would have been filbustered.
It couldn't have been filibustered because Snow, Collins and Spectre were always going to vote for it.
You can't provide one example of any GOP official saying it would have been filibustered if the corporate jet tax breaks weren't included.
You can't provide one example of Obama criticising the tax break at that time.
Mr. Obama called Ms. Collins and Mr. Specter, as well as Senator Olympia J. Snowe of Maine, another Republican expected to support the deal, to acknowledge they were acting against pressure from their party and, one official said, to thank them for their patriotism in helping advance the bill at a critical time.
Snowe didn't even participate in the obligatory "negotiations," and voted for it. And they didn't even need her.
It is abundantly clear all three of these 3 "moderates" were always going to vote for the bill. Certainly a lot more clear than it would have been certainly successfully filibustered if Obama hadn't sacrificed his principles (as if he had any) to include this obscure concession.
