Health/Medical Title: Pfizer puts into place ban on arsenic-based chicken food New studies by the U.S. usFDA notes that arsenic is found in much of the chicken people eat. View of exactly how much arsenic is present tends to vary. However, the manufacturer of the arsenic-based chicken food additive Roxarsone (3-Nitro) is not taking any chances, so it has removed the element from U.S. racks. Article source - Pfizer proactively bans arsenic-based chicken feed in U.S. by Newsytype.com. United States Roxarsone sales stopped by Pfizer While the Food and Drug Administration could have eventually restricted the additive Roxarsone, Pfizer Inc. voluntarily decided to pull it off the U.S. industry, effective next month. While previous studies had indicated the arsenic content in Roxarsone was eliminated with chicken waste, many poultry farmers had already stopped using the product, which had been used since the 1940s to kill parasites and promote growth. The ban Pfizer put out on Roxarsone wont just be for chicken. It will be for pigs and turkeys also. Company researcher Scott Brown explained that Pfizer sells Roxarsone in other nations. Currently, the company is in negotiations. Health concerns to face The FDA's deputy commissioner for foods, Michael Taylor, told the AP the latest study regarding chicken and arsenic-based additives elevated concern over whether such exposure is viable. In chicken waste, the carcinogen has remained a concern for environmentalists and consumer groups. The chicken waste is often used as fertilizer, which concerns these groups. They're worried this will get into the water somehow. As such, Maryland has attempted a ban in the past, arguing the arsenic seeps into Chesapeake Bay. Nitarsone is another arsenic food fed to chickens and turkeys that Pfizer sells. The FDA was asked to look into it by the Consumers Union. Specific data concerning the volume of arsenic in Nitarsone has not been determined at this time. No have to stop eating chicken It is still safe to eat chicken, the National Chicken Council said. The industry has done its own studies where it didn't discover any difficulties with small amounts of arsenic-based additives to be harmful, claims Richard Lobb as an industry spokesman. Also, 3-Nitro isnt universally used, reports the New York Times. Most who dont like Roxarsone dont think the councils testimony is worth listening to since corporations for instance Perdue and Tyson make $45 billion selling broiler chickens in the U.S. every year and the National Chicken Council represents these businesses.
