Large swaths of the United States are showing decreasing or stagnating life expectancy even as the nation’s overall longevity trend has continued upwards, according to a county-by-county study of life expectancy over two decades. snip The region where life expectancy is lowest, and in some places declining, begins in West Virginia, runs through the southern Appalachian Mountains and west through the Deep South into North Texas. Places of high life expectancy are more scattered. In addition to Northern Virginia they include counties in Colorado, Minnesota, Utah, California, Washington state and Florida. snip What surprised Murray and his team was that despite increased consciousness about disparities and per capita spending on health care that is at least 50 percent higher than European countries, the United States is falling farther behind them with each passing year. “My expectation was that in the last decade we would at least be keeping up in terms of the pace of progress. But that’s not what’s happening,” said Murray. snip The county-based life expectancy for men ranged from 65.9 years in Holmes County, Miss., to 81.1 years in Fairfax County. Women had the longest life expectancy in Collier County , Fla., which includes Naples (86 years) and the shortest in Holmes County, Miss. (73.5 years). Among states, Mississippi fares the worst. Of its 82 counties, 26 had life expectancies for men in 2007 that were roughly 66 to 69 years. The most striking trend was the slowing of life expectancy in women. From 1987 to 1997, there were 314 counties with either a loss of life expectancy or no growth in it. From 1997 to 2007 there were 860 counties in which that was the case.

What a hoot. The obesity rate in America varies dramatically by region as well. There is a correlation. When I used do a lot of business in Japan, the number one request of my Japanese guests was: "take me to see the poor fat people". No other country in the world has poor fat people. And you want to give them more handouts. It's sick and wrong.

Socialized medicine is killing people, and ruining the economy. Repeal Obamneycare, Bush prescription death panel pharmacies, and Medicare. These old people who are dying were raised on leaded gas, CO2 and carbon monoxide, but the socialists have reduced these vital nutrients to such low levels, that only people living near a major freeway interchange like the beltway and I95 in northern Virginia can survive. Like medical training for doctors? How do you explain the lower cost of medical care in countries with universal and/or single payer health insurance? Do those countries have less government regulation?

That's half the story, the other half is access to medical care, for instance it is estimated that a third of people with diabetes in Mississippi are undiagnosed. Do you think it's a coincidence that Mississippi has the lowest life expectancy in the country and also the highest rate of uninsured?

I remember when shoe stores used fluoroscopy to check the fit of shoes. I wonder if a study has ever been done to determine health risks.

I asked my doctor about that a couple of years ago, but he didn't know what I was talking about. Later he said he looked into it and said he couldn't find any research data. According to Mom those machines were in almost every sizable shoe store in the thirties.

In the UK, they were known as Pedoscopes, after the company based in St. Albans that manufactured them. Fluoroscopes were also used in shoe stores in continental Europe.
