Many cats are dropped off in the wilds and have to learn to survive unless they are of a friendly nature and happen upon kind humans such as your family's experience. A stray young male (guessed less than 1 year) wandered into our barn in the Pecos Wilderness in 2001 and practically demanded I extend both a welcome and care...he obviously had some previous 'good' associations with humans and after having him checked out and neutered since our female was spayed and not happy with his advances, he has been with us ever since and there are no mice anywhere and he goes out hunting at will but prefers a pillow top mattress at night...as well as Meow Mix.
He thinks he has the full rights and privileges of the dogs and gets his share at the begging table. The goats are just as comfortable with him as with the dogs and are a pleaure to watch as they adjust to one another without malice.
Ah, wouldn't it be nice.
