He has confessed to sending photographs of his private parts to girls half his age and stands accused of being an internet predator. But if Congressman Anthony Weiner survives his "sexting" scandal, it will be women who have saved him. Despite calls from senior fellow Democrats demanding he step down, the Representative, who lied about transmitting lewd pictures to women before coming clean when he had no other option, is defiantly clinging to his job. His argument for staying is that his wife Huma Abedin, nearly three months pregnant and a long-time aide to Hillary Clinton, and a majority of his constituents want him to remain in Congress. A Marist poll of his district found that 56 per cent thought he should not resign while 33 per cent believed he ought to go. By a margin of five percentage points, more women than men supported his determination to stay in the House of Representatives. Using the name @RepWeiner, Mr Weiner, 46, followed fewer than 200 of the 40,000 or so people who followed him (by yesterday, the number was more than 75,000). Of these 200, about 30 were young women with no apparent political or personal link to the congressman. They included Genette Cordova, 21, a Seattle student who was sent the photograph of Mr Weiner's bulging underpants that triggered the scandal. She initially issued a statement denying he was the sender. Since then, the majority of the other women he followed on Twitter have been vigorously defending his actions, using "hashtags" (searchable terms used so that tweets on a certain subject can be easily grouped) such as #myfriendAnthony and #hardestworkingmaninshowbiz. After his rambling press conference, a woman from South Carolina using the name "@southerntalker" told him: "Stay in Congress! Do not cave. At least you were damn honest as hell after a week ..." Rachel Gurstein, a New York graduate student, stated on Twitter: "I know that in today's ultra prudish climate, crotch-shots are a no-no, but I really hope @RepWeiner doesn't resign over this." A young New York choreographer called Danielle offered the thought: "I'm proud of @RepWeiner for coming clean and I hope he posts his full press conference on his YouTube channel. No out of context news BS ..." One of the women who Mr Weiner followed, who asked to remain anonymous, told The Sunday Telegraph: "I don't condone what he did but it was meant to be private and there was no hypocrisy involved. Republicans politicians have behaved much worse while posing as family guys. This is all a huge distraction – we should be talking about the issues Anthony has been so passionate about." Mr Weiner appears to have targeted young, attractive Left-wing women who had expressed admiration for his political stances or his outspoken attacks on republicans. He admitted to sending inappropriate messages to half a dozen women. These included Ginger Lee, a porn star from Nashville, Meagan Broussard, 26, a single mother from Texas, Lisa Weiss, 40, a Las Vegas blackjack dealer, and Traci Nobles, 34, a Pilates instructor from Georgia. Miss Broussard received a highly explicit photograph of Mr Weiner's genitals. Mr Weiner admitted he exchanged messages with a girl below the age of consent. Fox News reported that police in Delaware arrived at the home of a 17-year-old schoolgirl to discuss online communications with Mr Weiner. A spokesman said the communications with the girl were neither explicit nor indecent. But despite all the sordid revelations and rumours of worse to come, the "Weiner girls" were backing him to the hilt. Andrea Devinney tweeted "Still love @RepWeiner" while Melody Gambino told him: "@RepWeiner you're worth it!" Mr Weiner's plight even seemed to engender a sense of sisterhood among the women. Nicole Aquino, known as "@puccaxpink", messaged three others followed by Mr Weiner to say: "It's relieving to know that I'm associated with other fierce females." Scott Rasmussen, a leading pollster, said that Mr Weiner's support from women was part of the same phenomenon that President Bill Clinton, who, ironically, officiated at the congressman's wedding a year ago, enjoyed during the Monica Lewinsky scandal. "Women tend to be more Democratic and a little more forgiving than men on any kind of scandal." He added that in most political scandals respondents viewed the errant politician as no worse than others. "People aren't measuring politicians against purity, they're measuring them against other politicians."

Recalling some of the comments from when this began...I'm wondering when our resident 'usual suspects' will begin attacking Pelosi Galore, Chuck U Schumer, that airhead Wasserman Schultz, and others WITHIN THE DEMOCRATIC PARTY LEADERSHIP that says Weiner must resign ASAP. I'm betting they don't say a fuckin word.....(laughing)
