She is married to one of the most bombastic, sociable and now scandal-tarred politicians in the country. But Huma Abedin is an intensely private person whose quiet commitment to her husband, Rep. Anthony Weiner, has resulted in the two having rarely spent a weekend apart since their wedding last summer, friends say. A 35-year-old deputy chief of staff to Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, Ms. Abedin is a longtime aide to one of the country's most powerful operatives, "and her job, among other jobs, is often to satisfy those people without offense," said Robert Barnett, a personal attorney for the Clintons who has known Ms. Abedin for at least 15 years. Related So after Ms. Abedin did not appear Monday alongside Mr. Weiner for his public confession, people close to her cautioned against interpreting her absence as a sign of wavering commitment to their relationship. Ms. Abedin has resolved to remain married to her husband, according to people familiar with the matter. Because she has earned the good will of an extended network of political and media figures—she started as in intern in the Clinton White House—and because of the rigors of her own job, Ms. Abedin has been able to sidestep the type of public involvement in Mr. Weiner's career that might be otherwise be expected of a spouse. But she has now found herself for the first time unwittingly thrust into an arena she has tried her entire career to avoid and to navigate on behalf of her high-profile boss: the political spotlight. "I think people have been very deferential to her in terms of being a political spouse," said a person close to the couple. "She's not Mrs. Anthony Weiner. She's Huma Abedin. She's been known to many people for a very long time, and they've continued to respect her boundaries...This has been the first time she has encountered anything otherwise." Rep. AP Photo/Richard Drew Ms. Abedin believed Mr. Weiner's initial story that his Twitter and Facebook accounts had been hacked, and after he disclosed the truth of his indiscretions to her early Monday, she reacted with sadness and anger but remained composed, according to a person familiar with the matter. Ms. Abedin was in New York on Monday, as she had been throughout the previous weekend, and in the aftermath of the conversation with her husband she turned for advice to her sister, Heda Abedin, a New York fashion stylist. By early afternoon, Ms. Abedin had sought the counsel of Mrs. Clinton, whose own spouse's Oval Office misbehavior equipped her perhaps better than almost anyone else to advise her aide. But Ms. Abedin's choice to refrain from appearing alongside Mr. Weiner was her own decision. "I just don't think that's who she is, to stand there like that," said a person close to her. "She's not a stand-by-your-man type. She's very private. If he had been announcing some sort of positive thing, she wouldn't have been there, either." By late Tuesday morning, Ms. Abedin had returned to Washington, D.C., engaged in her normal routine of nonstop meetings as she prepared to accompany Mrs. Clinton on a weeklong trip to Africa, scheduled to depart Tuesday evening. "She's here, she's upstairs," said Philippe Reines, deputy assistant secretary of state. "She's doing her job. She hasn't missed a beat throughout." Still, "things aren't hunky-dory," as one person put it, and while their private relationship is on the mend, Mr. Weiner's political prospects appear increasingly dim even if she sticks by his side. As for Ms. Abedin, however, Mr. Barnett, who spoke to The Wall Street Journal with Ms. Abedin's permission, said he had no doubt that she would rebound quickly. "Those who have a pre-incident deep reservoir of support are those who survive, and Huma has that deep reservoir like no one you can imagine," he said.
