INDEPENDENCE, Mo. (KMOX) -- Police swarmed a home in Independence Missouri Sunday, their guns drawn ready for a big fight against a very large animal.
However that animal, an alligator turned out to be a concrete lawn ornament.
Homeowner Rick Sheridan told a Kansas City Fox television station he was working in his garage when he heard gunshots. He went around the back of his house to see three police officers shooting at the large reptile lying next to a pond.
"The officer fired two rounds, and killed my concrete, ornamental alligator," Sheridan said.
A conservation agent had advised police to kill the gator if they felt it posed a danger. After realizing the piece of yard art wasn't moving the police left.
Independence police spokesman Tom Gentry says the gator was partially submerged in weeds and looked really lifelike.
As for the gator, Sheridan says his trusty friend served his purpose. Sheridan originally purchased the concrete alligator to scare off children. He plans to patch up the alligator.
