Title: The U.S. corporate tax haven

When we think of corporate tax havens, we often think of offshore accounts. Well, think again: the United States has become a giant tax haven for corporations.

That’s what’s so crazy about the current call to lower corporate tax rates in the United Stats: they’re already (as graph below shows) paying a historically low percentage of federal tax revenues.

snip

The fact is, we’re being held hostage—by corporations and mainstream economists alike—to the idea that one tiny group in society has the right to appropriate most of the surplus and to decide when and where most jobs will be created. And, if it doesn’t get its way, it’ll deploy its capital elsewhere.

That’s why the United States has become a giant corporate tax haven. And, if things continue as they are, it’ll become an empty shell—just as empty as those offshore “headquarters” corporations have been using to avoid taxes on their profits.

The truth is American corporations have abandoned the American middle class.

The truth is American corporations have abandoned the American middle class.

Actually, the truth is when you produce the 2nd highest corporate tax rate on the planet, combined with insane union demands on wages, corporations moved to more hospitable business climates.

And EVERYONE GETS SCREWED. Not just the middle class.

Course you are a liberal, so bullshit class warfare is like breathing to you.

Corporate taxes have been falling as a percent since the middle of the last century until they are now a small fraction of total tax collected.

On the one hand you claim a corporation is a person with free speech rights to buy candidates and influence elections, but now you claim it isn't when it comes to paying taxes.

Even you should be able to spot the contradiction.

And you don't have a clue as to why?

Tell us why Boofer.

I DARE you to.

Funny how Boof will give these one line answers that appear to almost imply something but are really just his way of weasling. Ask him to "educate" you and you'll get responses like "I'm not your file clerk" or "You don't know? Pity."

It's his way of immunizing his backward way of "thinking" from any type of scrutiny.

The fact is, LM, as we both know, the aggregate earnings AND profits of US based corporations, that is corporations that file a US tax return, have grown exponentially since WWII but the effective tax rate that they have been paying on those earnings and profits has fallen. Boofer will try to "imply" that it's because the US is somehow unfriendly to "Big Business" when, in fact, foreign companies have found the US very tax friendly compared to their "home" country. And, of course, US corporations have no greater friend than the US tax code.

A typical response of Boofer's to the above facts will be "Riiight".

Remarkable rebuttal, eh?

What positions, the ones where you say a corporation is a person for speech purposes but not one for tax purposes?

I say you're confused. Corporations are required to pay taxes, there's nothing new there. What is new is the SC declaring that corporations are also just like the little people and are free to spend millions of dollars buying influence from politicians. That doesn't bode well for representative government, since government will always go to the highest bidder, and that isn't going to be you or me.

I think churches should pay taxes too. Those mega churches could balance plenty of budgets. It's not like they don't use the same services as the rest of us.

But as far as corps having individual rights maybe that's a good thing, then when their products or services kill people their CEOs and stockholders can be charged with murder. Enron and XE should be first on the list to create precedents.

Wrong. Corporations act as a 'pass thru' for customers who pay the taxes in full, because the price for a product or service is in effect marked up by the corporation or business to cover the tax.

Only those that don't understand how this economy, and taxation, works, think 'corporations' and 'businesses' pay taxes, skippy. I'm not surprised you are one of them.

Because business income taxes are a percentage of profits, what you have left over after expenses are subtracted, it would be difficult to predict with accuracy at the front end what your taxes will be in order to add them to the price of a product or service. Further, if you increase the cost of a product or service to include expected tax, you also increase your profit and thus your tax owed.

Does this mean that GE is going to retroactively reduce prices because it overpaid its taxes in 2009?

It's an argument that doesn't hold water. While tax margins are built into pricing it's nowhere near a 1-1 relationship that would justify characterizing it as a "pass-thru".

She's spot on in her statement, Boofer. There is nothing ridiculous about it at all. If you actually paid attention to your business instead of playing on the internet all day you'd know this.

Taxes are paid on earnings. Two years ago you were wailing about how your business was about to go tits up. Now, suddenly, or so you claim, you're back in the black.

There is absolutely no way that you could have modeled a tax payment cost basis into your pricing model based upon this "famine to feast" scenario.
