As with most people, I simply took at face value the popular version that Paul Revere warned that the British were coming, the British were coming.

Not having any real reason to look into it any deeper, Sarah Palin's statement that Revere warned the British that the colonial militias were waiting seemed odd.

But it appears that the popular version is not complete.

In fact, as pointed out at Conservatives4Palin, Revere did in fact tell the British that the colonial militias, who had been alerted, were waiting for them. Here is the original historical text written by Revere (spelling in original, bold added): I observed a Wood at a Small distance, & made for that. When I got there, out Started Six officers, on Horse back, and orderd me to dismount;-one of them, who appeared to have the command, examined me, where I came from,& what my Name Was? I told him. it was Revere, he asked if it was Paul? I told him yes He asked me if I was an express? I answered in the afirmative. He demanded what time I left Boston? I told him; and aded, that their troops had catched aground in passing the River, and that There would be five hundred Americans there in a short time, for I had alarmed the Country all the way up. He imediately rode towards those who stoppd us, when all five of them came down upon a full gallop; one of them, whom I afterwards found to be Major Mitchel, of the 5th Regiment, Clapped his pistol to my head, called me by name, & told me he was going to ask me some questions, & if I did not give him true answers, he would blow my brains out. He then asked me similar questions to those above. He then orderd me to mount my Horse, after searching me for arms Palin's short statement on the video was less than clear; that sometimes happens but the part of the statement which has people screaming -- that Revere warned the British that the colonial militias were waiting -- appears to be true.

I've learned something new today, about Paul Revere.

The leading lights of the left-blogosphere have made fools of themselves, as have people who are not of the left-blogosphere. I presume they all will be apologizing.

Update: Aaron Worthing at Patterico has a round-up of all the hyperventilated left- blogospheric reaction, including by Think Progress, which writes: It’s hard to imagine why Revere would warn the British of anything, or why he’d do it with bells and gun shots. This account in "Paul Revere's Ride" by David Hackett Fischer (Oxford University Press 1994), may be of interest to Think Progress and all the others laughing because they purport to be so much better informed than Palin: "A townsman remembered that 'repeated gunshots, the beating of drums and the ringing of bells filled the air.'.... Along the North Shore of Massachusetts, church bells began to toll and the heavy beat of drums could be heard for many miles in the night air."

Just like you're from Alaska and know how to plug in your car, I am from New England and I know Colonial history.

Revere hung two Lanterns to show the British were coming bt sea, and rode from Boston to Lexington to warn Patriots of the approaching British Army.

The GOP presidential field in general has shown that basic American history is not their strong suit. Tim Pawlenty confused the Iraq war with an Iran war, Hermain Cain confused the Constitution with the Declaration of Independence, and Rep. Michele Bachmann (R-MN) confused Massachusetts with New Hampshire.

Of couse my favorite before this was Bachmann’s particular with history that even earned her a debate invitation with a 10th grader.

"Midnight Ride"

On the night of April 18–19, 1775, just hours before the battles of Lexington and Concord, Revere performed his "Midnight Ride". He and William Dawes were instructed by Joseph Warren to ride from Boston to Lexington to warn John Hancock and Samuel Adams of the movements of the British Army, which was beginning a march from Boston to Lexington, ostensibly to arrest Hancock and Adams and seize the weapons stores in Concord.

The British army (the King's "regulars") had been stationed in Boston since the ports were closed in the wake of the Boston Tea Party, and was under constant surveillance by Revere and other patriots as word began to spread that they were planning a move. On the night of April 18, 1775, the army began its move across the Charles River toward Lexington, and the Sons of Liberty immediately went into action. At about 11 pm, Revere was sent by Warren across the Charles River to Charlestown, on the opposite shore, where he could begin a ride to Lexington, while Dawes was sent the long way around, via the Boston Neck and the land route to Lexington.

In the days before April 18, Revere had instructed Robert Newman, the sexton of the Old North Church, to send a signal by lantern to alert colonists in Charlestown as to the movements of the troops when the information became known. In what is well known today by the phrase "one if by land, two if by sea", one lantern in the steeple would signal the army's choice of the land route, while two lanterns would signal the route "by water" across the Charles River.[7] This was done to get the message through to Charlestown in the event that both Revere and Dawes were captured. Newman and Captain John Pulling momentarily held two lanterns in the Old North Church as Revere himself set out on his ride, to indicate that the British soldiers were in fact crossing the Charles River that night. Revere rode a horse lent to him by John Larkin, Deacon of the Old North Church.

Riding through present-day Somerville, Medford, and Arlington, Revere warned patriots along his route - many of whom set out on horseback to deliver warnings of their own. By the end of the night there were probably as many as 40 riders throughout Middlesex County carrying the news of the army's advance. Revere did not shout the phrase later attributed to him ("The British are coming!"), largely because the mission depended on secrecy and the countryside was filled with British army patrols; also, most colonial residents at the time considered themselves British as they were all legally British subjects. Revere's warning, according to eyewitness accounts of the ride and Revere's own descriptions, was "The Regulars are coming out."[8] Revere arrived in Lexington around midnight, with Dawes arriving about a half hour later. Samuel Adams and John Hancock were spending the night at the Hancock-Clarke House in Lexington, and they spent a great deal of time discussing plans of action upon receiving the news. Revere and Dawes, meanwhile, decided to ride on toward Concord, where the militia's arsenal was hidden. They were joined by Samuel Prescott, a doctor who happened to be in Lexington "returning from a lady friend's house at the awkward hour of 1 a.m."[9]

Revere, Dawes, and Prescott were detained by British troops in Lincoln at a roadblock on the way to Concord. Prescott jumped his horse over a wall and escaped into the woods; Dawes also escaped, though soon after he fell off his horse and did not complete the ride. Revere was detained and questioned and then escorted at gunpoint by three British officers back toward Lexington.[10] As morning broke and they neared Lexington Meeting-house, shots were heard. The British officers became alarmed, confiscated Revere's horse, and rode toward the Meeting-house. Revere was horseless and walked through a cemetery and pastures until he came to Rev. Clarke's house where Hancock and Adams were staying. As the battle on Lexington Green continued, Revere helped John Hancock and his family escape from Lexington with their possessions, including a trunk of Hancock's papers.

The warning delivered by the three riders successfully allowed the militia to repel the British troops in Concord, who were harried by guerrilla fire along the road back to Boston. Prescott knew the countryside well even in the dark, and arrived at Concord in time to warn the people there. An interactive map showing the routes taken by Revere, Dawes, and Prescott is available at the Paul Revere House website.[11]

Revere's role was not particularly noted during his life. In 1861, over 40 years after his death, the ride became the subject of "Paul Revere's Ride", a poem by Henry Wadsworth Longfellow. Its opening lines are:

Listen, my children, and you shall hear
Of the midnight ride of Paul Revere,
On the eighteenth of April, in Seventy-Five;M
Hardly a man is now alive
Who remembers that famous day and year

Today, parts of the ride are posted with signs marked "Revere's Ride." The full ride used Main Street in Charlestown, Broadway and Main Street in Somerville, Main Street and High Street in Medford, to Arlington center, and Massachusetts Avenue the rest of the way (an old alignment through Arlington Heights is called "Paul Revere Road").

Myths and legends

In his poem, Longfellow took many liberties with the events of the evening, most especially giving sole credit to Revere for the collective achievements of the three riders (as well as the other riders whose names do not survive to history). Longfellow also depicts the lantern signal in the Old North Church as meant for Revere and not from him, as was actually the case. Other inaccuracies include claiming that Revere rode triumphantly into Concord instead of Lexington, and a general lengthening of the time frame of the night's events. For a long time, though, historians of the American Revolution as well as textbook writers relied almost entirely on Longfellow's poem as historical evidence, creating substantial misconceptions in the minds of the American people.[citation needed] In re-examining the episode, some historians[who?] in the 20th century have attempted to demythologize Paul Revere almost to the point of marginalization.[citation needed] While it is true that Revere was not the only rider that night, that does not refute the fact that Revere was riding and successfully completed the first phase of his mission to warn Adams and Hancock. Other historians have since stressed his importance, including David Hackett Fischer in his 1995 book Paul Revere's Ride, an important scholarly study of Revere's role in the opening of the Revolution.

Popular myths and urban legends have persisted, though, concerning Revere's ride, mainly due to the tendency in the past to take Longfellow's poem as truth. Other riders such as Israel Bissell and Sybil Ludington are often suggested[by whom?] as having completed much more impressive rides than Revere's; however, the circumstances behind the others' rides were entirely different (Bissell was a news-carrier riding from Boston to Philadelphia with news of the battle at Lexington; Revere had made similar rides with the news in the years preceding the war. The only evidence for Ludington's ride is an oral tradition.) Longfellow's poem was never designed to be history and there are few serious historians today who would maintain that Revere was anything like the lone-wolf rider portrayed in the poem.

I don't care what spin Sarah might try do do stem damage control from trying to recount an important day in Paul Revere's life in his role as a messenger for the Boston Committee of Public Safety, she got it wrong.

"Governor Palin Gives the Media a History Lesson on Paul Revere’s Midnight Ride

The mark of any successful political venture by Governor Palin often results a misrepresentation of her words that only leaves the media with egg on their faces.

Governor Palin’s bus tour has been successful in allowing her to highlight the greatness of the history of America, meet everyday Americans and fellow politicians, and share her policy stances on everything from fishing regulations in New Hampshire to ethanol subsidies to the debt ceiling.

Such successes leaves the media grasping at proverbial bendy straws.

Today’s news is no different.

Poised with the opportunity to more appropriately address political stories essentially pre- written for them, such as abysmal jobs numbers under the Obama administration or the newest report that the federal government lends financial aid to the very same countries from whom they borrow , the media have chosen to focus more on their own historical ignorance by creating a story out of a non-story and misportraying Governor Palin’s comments on Paul Revere yesterday:

“He who warned, uh, the British that they weren’t going to be taking away our arms uh by ringing those bells and making sure as he’s riding his horse through town to send those warning shots and bells that we were going to be secure and we were going to be free and we were going to be armed.”

Those quibbling with Governor Palin’s statements have their history incomplete. During Paul Revere’s ride he was stopped by British soldiers, which Revere recounts in a 1789 letter maintained by the Massachusetts Historical Society ,in his original language :

"I observed a Wood at a Small distance, & made for that.

I told him; and added, that their troops had catched aground in passing the River, and that There would be five hundred Americans there in a short time, for I had alarmed the Country all the way up.

He then orderd me to mount my Horse, after searching me for arms.

He then orderd them to advance, & to lead me in front.

When we got to the Road, they turned down towards Lexington.

When we had got about one Mile, the Major Rode up to the officer that was leading me, & told him to give me to the Sergeant.

As soon as he took me, the Major orderd him, if I attempted to run, or any body insulted them, to blow my brains out.

We rode till we got near Lexington Meeting-house, when the Militia fired a Voley of Guns, which appeared to alarm them very much.

Upon being stopped, did Revere, in essence, warn the British soldiers of the colonists’ plans?

Yes. The strawmen built by the media seems to almost indicate that Revere rode through the streets warning the British soldiers.

In actuality, simply put, Paul Revere told Regulars of the colonists’ plans during his attempt to warn the colonists of the Regulars’ approach (Revere actually said, “the Regulars are coming!”.

The colonist still viewed themselves as British subjects at the time and would not have said, “the British are coming”.)

Additionally, as the Paul Revere Heritage Project notes, Revere had reason for concern that the colonists’ arms would be taken away as they questioned the location of the militia’s ammunition:

The Redcoats had set temporary roadblocks as a security measure and on their way to Concord they encountered British soldiers.

Prescott managed to escape; Revere was captured and Dawes tried to run away but was arrested shortly thereafter.

The British held Revere and interrogated him with a pistol on his chest.

He was asked about the plans of the militia and where they kept their ammunition.

When asked where the Patriots were hiding he told them the truth and replied that they had 500 militiamen in Concord protecting them and 1500 coming.

As they rode towards Concord he was told that if he tried to escape he would be shot.

There were no claims by Governor Palin that Paul Revere’s ride had anything to do with the 2nd Amendment as some spuriously claim.

She simply indicated the immediate concern of Revere and the colonists.

It appears that the media once again fail to grasp the history of our Founding again.

You may recall that the media were in an uproar when Governor Palin encouraged Tea Partiers to party like it’s 1773, and the media claimed she didn’t know her Revolutionary War history.

Oops.

Governor Palin stated that this “One Nation” bus tour would, in part, draw attention to America’s founding and history. It looks like she is doing just that."

LMAOAY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Sarah Palin

Be serious M. Doggie Dog, this is just crazy.

Palin is someone who most credible observers agree will be a weak candidate. Just picture this kind of garbled up thing happening with regularity on the campaign trail.

This us way the GOP establishment doesn’t want her to run and her presence on Fox was devalued.

If you look at polls, not even her own supporters want her to run. The other day, her camp actually leaked word that she would not be meeting with party leaders in key primary states in order to encourage a sense that she’s planning an unconventional presidential campaign.

To put it kindly, that's not particularly credible.

The bus tour itself has no coherent rationale whatsoever. She launched it, transparently, after media interest in her had died down precipitously. Palin is openly mocking reporters who are treating it as real news. I'm afraid that until she actually declares her candidacy, all people see now is her involved in a strange con job.

It made no sense and did not accurately depict history. What it did show is she is not a quick study when it comes to new information about things like this.

What you do here is describe what you try to do with your now comically bombastic posts full of weird coined expressions, insults and belittlements.

You are entertaining to watch, much as is Palin's muddled display of a lame understanding of a particular player in the U.S.'s Revolutionary War period. Her (and your) act speaks for itself and needs no push from pundits to sound weird and badly garbled.

Too bad you have lost so much perspective in your insane world full of many layers of resentments, but that ultimately is your problem, not the rest of the world's.

Because you and her have problems in common, I understand why she resonates with you.

Thanks for sharing M. Doggie Dog. And here I thought I was going to be bored finishing some thing up with no one on forum to talk to this early in the morning. You are living proof that mentally strange Alaskans have value. Having them around is like hiring the handicapped because they are fun to watch. Thanks for sharing. ;-D

I know you are an unabashed Palin fan,but are you trying to tell us all she uttered the above sentence on purpose? Hell,it's barely recognizable English, and sounds like she is saying riding a horse through town fires warning shots and bells that go off.

At BEST it is garbled nonsense that can be interpreted any way the partisans on either side want to spin it.

*I* SUSPECT she was trying to make a 2nd Amendment statement about the British seizing the powder stored in the state armory (sending a message),and got REALLY lucky.

Not that it really matters at this point. The election is a long ways off and she hasn't declared herself to be a candidate.

The bus tour itself has no coherent rationale whatsoever.

That's not true. She is doing what Donald Trump,Madonna, and other celebrities do all the time. She is promoting herself by keeping her name in the public eye. This keeps her speaking fees, book sales, and public appearances rates high and keeps the invitations to appear rolling in.

Nothing wrong with this. All the celebrities do it.

YAWN ...

Spare me the co-ed pick up lines and PC blather you absurd and shallow libTURD fool.

I neither seek or need your approval for anything that I do in any way.

The United States of America was never intended to be populated by amoral herd dwellers, OUR way of life is based on moral INDIVIDUALS.

YOU cornflake whore, and the bovine herds of your ilk are what's wrong with this culture today.

YOU are nothing but just another hypocritical little libTURD FOOL, TOOL, and WHORE.

Based on the given empirical FACTS of what you libTURDS have done to America, it is impossible to deny that YOU and your ilk are America's enemies.

YOU will pay for your treason, sooner or later, one way or another.

Say hi to Hitler when you get to your final destination creep.

Spit ...

Spoiled, stupid and ignorant, brain dead phuckwads, libTURD fools, tools, and idiots, are the real sickness; the messiah "king" obammy and his regime are only the symptoms.

I know you are an unabashed Palin fan,but are you trying to tell us all she uttered the above sentence on purpose? Hell,it's barely recognizable English, and sounds like she is saying riding a horse through town fires warning shots and bells that go off.

That's not true.

Governor Palin is just a politician. I don't worship any man or woman and for sure no politician would ever make such a list even IF it existed.

You still miss the point, I despise ALL HYPOCRISY, and LIARS and BULLIES, I don't think much of the "left" or the demonRAT or repukelican't partee either.

What pisses me off is watching AMERICANS act like schools of fish. Monkey see monkey do stuff.

The libTURDS immediately claimed that she was making a claim that she clearly was not making.

In the end I don't really care, I don't worry, (well I try not to anyway), about stuff I cannot control.

I'LL live MY LIFE as FREELY as possible, and so will my family and friends. THEY are prepared for what is coming.

You are d@mned correct how it really doesn't matter, since she hasn't even declared and that it's a long time until the election.

At this point I support Herman Cain, but I need to learn more about his beliefs and record.

BUT ... I WILL vote for a shit house rat before I'd ever vote for the libTURD partee or the messiah "king" obammy.

DC does NOT run my life, and it NEVER will.

Spoiled, stupid and ignorant, brain dead phuckwads, libTURD fools, tools, and idiots, are the real sickness; the messiah "king" obammy and his regime are only the symptoms.

No wonder you stay pissed off all the time. That is the norm now.

At this point I support Herman Cain, but I need to learn more about his beliefs and record.

I agree with both thoughts. Party People from both branches of the ruling party are already throwing shit at him hoping to see something stick, though.

I hope I'm wrong, but I suspect I will end up casting another write-in vote for Ron Paul in the general election.

LOL!

"Word."

Can you imagine how grumpy I'd be if I had to exist in one of those steaming hives down there?

I'd be DEAD or in prison.

Oh yeah it's headed for another attempt to divide conservatives by running some third party loser. What the heck? It's always worked before hasn't it?

That's why IF I was betting I'd have to bet on another term for the messiah "king" obammy.

The American electorate is just that stupid and uninformed, by design of course; and I'm sure that both blood and lots of treasure have been spent by the Chi Town boys et. al. in making it so, and keeping it so.

You absolutely KNOW that the libTURDS ARE going to do everything and anything to steal this election, as they always do.

I see no CURRENTLY realistic option to their normal use of force against the AMERICAN people and system.

The pattern is well known in the progression in human societies.

We ALL KNOW WHAT is coming at us and our posterity NOW.

Well those of us who know even a little bit about human history do anyways.

We are ALL Cassandra until the balloon goes up now.

Because the majority of our countrymen believe only what directly touches their own lives.

Why shouldn't they?

We all live deep within an almost infinite OCEAN of LIES as a culture now.

Spoiled, stupid and ignorant, brain dead phuckwads, libTURD fools, tools, and idiots, are the real sickness; the messiah "king" obammy and his regime are only the symptoms.
