Title: DeMint Now Considering GOP Run Due To Weak Field

Those Republicans who don’t like the current conservative entrants in the presidential race may soon have another option. Sen. Jim DeMint, R-S.C., says he is thinking about joining the fray.

Conservative activists are urging him to run, and he’s discussing the issue with his wife, DeMint told The Hill. He says he will pray about the decision in deference to all those who back him.

DeMint, one of the strongest tea partyers around, had earlier signaled that he wouldn’t run. But many Republican conservatives complain that among the crop of definite and likely candidates, there isn’t anyone on the right who can beat President Barack Obama.

“It’s humbling,” DeMint tells The Hill. “Out of respect for the people who have asked us to think about this, that’s what we’re going to do. I don’t want to imply that I’m changing in mind, but I want to consider what all these folks are doing.”

Some conservatives see DeMint as a combination of former Arizona Sen. Barry Goldwater, a fiery conservative, and iconic ex-President Ronald Reagan. Supporters view him as one of the few Republicans who can attract support from both social and fiscal conservatives.

Two substantial efforts have emerged among Republicans to draw DeMint into the race. Legendary strategist Richard Viguerie has organized one of them. The other comes from Conservatives4DeMint, which says it comprises 4,700 members and regional coordinators in 35 states.

As for Viguerie, he said in a conference call Saturday, “I’ve asked him about the presidential thing twice in the last five or six weeks,” according to The Hill.

“I think he’s giving it serious consideration. Hopefully this will push him over the line and give him the encouragement that there would be a strong base of support.” DeMint would instantly become the party’s front-runner, Viguerie said. “He would be the dominant movement conservative leader.”

And as for Conservatives4DeMint, its national director Angela Toft told The Hill that what started in California as a local fan club has mushroomed around the country. “A groundswell erupted,” she said.

see DeMint as a combination of former Arizona Sen. Barry Goldwater, a fiery conservative, and iconic ex-President Ronald Reagan

But most see him as a globalist, statist, war mongering, anti-American Obushma bot.

If DeMint runs, that is who I will support. But he is not going to run. Everyone knows that RHINO Romney will be the nominee.

Everyone knows that RHINO Romney will be the nominee.

I agree that Romney will probably be the nominee (given the GOPs proclivity to nominate who's "next in line" rather than who can win).

I only have one small bone to pick - it's the use of the term RINO.

I believe it's time for us to admit that the Bush's, McClowns and the Romneys aren't the Republicans In Name Only. They are the real Republicans. Period. Republicans who are just me-too, democrat lite. The kind of republicans that people like go65 and skippy just love to promote

Conservatives (like DeMint) are as much a threat to status-quo republicans as they are to democrats.

Perhaps more so.

I agree, I've always thought of myself as a 'RINO' due to my being a conservative, and the GOP isn't.

The funny and sad thing is - if the GOP nominates a real conservative they'll win.

If they nominate someone like Romney, they'll likely lose.

If a "real conservative" can't even win the GOP nomination for President, what makes you think they would win a general election?

If a "real conservative" can't even win the GOP nomination for President, what makes you think they would win a general election?

Since 1984, the GOP nominee has been "democrat lite". Here's the record since then:

1988 - democrat lite won
1992 - democrat won
1996 - democrat won
2000 - democrat lite won
2004 - democrat lite won
2008 - democrat won

As you can see, the voters are ambivalent when given a choice between democrat and democrat lite. But, when given a choice between democrat and conservative,

1980 - conservative won
1984 - conservative won

they will choose the conservative.

Unfortunately, the GOP is more about drinking lattes with the inside the beltway crowd than it is about winning presidential elections.

You guys really need to stop pretending it's still the 1980's, the country has changed a bit since then.

And again, if a conservative can't even win the GOP nomination how on earth are they going to win the general election?

why is it that Republican voters generally don't like Conservatives?

Again, if a Conservative can't win among "Republican" voters, what chance do they have in the general?

Awesome!

So what was it that made "Reagan" so desirable and "conservative"????

Was it his AMNESTY PROGRAM or his massive EXPANSION OF GOVERNMENT, or his tax increases???

1980 - conservative won
1984 - conservative won

Reagan won those years.

What did he do that was so "conservative"?

He ran up debt and deficits. Increased SS payroll taxes. Raised income taxes. Government GREW. Manufacturing died. Our trade deficit sky rocketed. Our dollar tanked. Russia shot an airliner out of the sky and he did nothing. Terrorists murdered 283 Marines and he did nothing. He sold arms to Iran - which should have gotten him impeached and removed. He invaded a shithole of a nation unprovoked.

What was so goddam conservative about Reagan?

I have to admit that I'm still trying to work out how a conservative who can't win his own party's nomination could win a national election.

Here were the questions:

"So what was it that made "Reagan" so desirable and "conservative"????"

"Was it his AMNESTY PROGRAM or his massive EXPANSION OF GOVERNMENT, or his tax increases???"

"...and demint makes the stupid party less weak.........HOW?"

Care to discuss either?

Hey party hack, I'll try to make this so simple even you can grasp it:

A c-o-n-s-e-r-v-a-t-i-v-e cannot win the GOP nomination because the GOP is not a c-o-n-s-e-r-v-a-t-i-v-e party.

I did in 1984. I ignored Mondale when he ran with Carter. I couldn't when he ran for POTUS. Also, "Star Wars" was a policy that made sense to me. Still does if only for the R&D in lasers.

The funny and sad thing is - if the GOP nominates a real conservative they'll win.

If they nominate someone like Romney, they'll likely lose.

No historical data supports this one.

We've had exactly ONE (1) President get reelected with a 8% plus unemployment rate in the last century.

Franklin Delano Roosevelt, 1936.

FDR will remain the only one after next years election cycle. The ugly, and rather frightening, reality is we've already seen the best economic news of this YEAR...and it was anemic (1st quarter numbers).

Its all downhill for at least the next four (4) quarters. And there is simply nothing that can be done legislatively - even if Owe-bama would lose the ideology based economic policies for Reaganesque economic viewpoints - that will change whats happening before election day, 2012.

He's a one term failure. The only questions are 1) How bad will it get before the economy gets what it needs in economic policy...2) Who the next POTUS will be.

Mark this one down, cause its going to prove to be 100% accurate.

Proxy IP's are amusing.....lmao

I agree with you.

I was born in 1959.

In my life time, the GOP nominated exactly TWO good Presidential candidates -- Goldwater and Reagan.

Bill Clinton was actually a better President than anyone the GOP nominated besides Goldwater and Reagan.

This is the problem for the country -- there isn't any real choice. No matter who is elected, we keep getting the same rotten policies.

Yep - and the establishment repubs at the time of Goldwater (Rockefeller, Scranton et. al.) sabotaged him. Probably most supported LBJ or stayed home.

And while the establisment repubs weren't able to stop Reagan, his nomination came at a price.

The price was GHWB.

They did try to sabotage Reagan too. Remember John Anderson?

Fortunately, Carter was so bad that Reagan was able to pull it out even with another Republican in the race.
