The reality is that progressives have totally turned me off with sexism. It's rampant. The use of the word is merely an extension of the attitudes that have been dominating that bloc for quite a while. I've pointed out numerous times the sexist nature of comments against women who don't happen to agree politically with the group. Are they criticized on the ideas? No, it's nearly always a personal attack, and there's no-holds barred if the criticism is gender-related. So to me, his remark was a "bound to happen" moment. That's the true attitude of progressives toward women. And liberal women? If you think for a minute that you're 'safe,' think again. That's not how it works. Anyone who attacks on the basis of gender has no respect for you, either, regardless of your political views. You can count on that one. Liberal women need to quit pandering to the progressive wing of the Democrats. They aren't your friends in the least.
