Editorial: For Democrats, It's All About Tax Hikes

Posted 05/20/2011 06:46 PM ET

Politics: If nothing else, last week made it abundantly clear where Democrats stand on today's most pressing issues, and the picture isn't pretty.

In case you missed it, the Democrats floated a plan for a millionaire surtax in an attempt to, as the Hill put it, "force Republicans to accept other tax increases." They tried to hike taxes on oil companies by more than $2 billion a year, because the industry is currently making big profits; and mounted a nationwide campaign to scare seniors away from Rep. Paul Ryan's Medicare reform — including a new ad that depicts Ryan tossing a senior citizen off a cliff.

Detect a theme there? On issue after issue, Republicans are putting forward serious, sober and often politically risky solutions to the nation's most pressing problems, while Democrats play class-warfare games and stoke the public's fear.

To cope with the nation's gargantuan debt, for example, the GOP issued a budget plan that focuses — correctly — on reining in the government's runaway spending.

The only thing Democrats want to talk about is how all our problems can be solved if we just raise taxes on the "the rich."

President Obama wants to boost them by at least $1 trillion, and Senate Democrats promise their long-delayed budget will include $2 trillion in new taxes.

That's ill-advised even if the economy were humming along, but reckless given the current state of things.

When it comes to sky-high gas prices, Republicans at least understand that the root of the problem is too little oil supply, and in the Senate this week they tried to pass a bill to boost domestic oil production, only to be blocked by Democrats.

Listen to the Podcast Subscribe through iTunesWhat do Democrats do instead? Demonize oil companies for making a profit and try to squeeze them for extra tax dollars. As President Obama said, "They are making tens of billions of dollars each — huge profits — while you're struggling to fill up your gas tank."

Never mind that less oil production and more oil industry taxes are the exact opposite of what's needed to bring gasoline prices down.

And while House Republicans advocate a serious Medicare reform plan that harnesses market forces to rein in the program's costs and protect it for the future, Democrats offer only fear.

Health and Human Services head Kathleen Sebelius said Ryan's Medicare plan would cause some seniors to "die sooner," and the Democratic National Committee proclaimed in an ad that Republicans are "now for killing" Medicare.

The topper came in the Ryan-pushing-grandma-over-the-cliff ad, produced by a group headed by the DNC's former deputy national finance director.

What's their Medicare solution? Nothing.

Democrats might think stoking envy and fear is politically sufficient, but we give the public more credit than that.

The country faces serious problems and voters deserve political leaders willing to step up and propose serious, credible solutions.

As the last week made clear, they aren't getting anything like that from the party of FDR

It's time the chief benefactors coughed up some dough for their semi private army since they seem to be profiting well from it's antics. And also make it a crime to speculate in a commodity that you can't take personal possession of.

So instead of just cutting subsidies for oil companies, why don't we cut subsidies for Ethanol, solar power and wind turbine farms too???.. just to make the playing field "FAIR"......

My guess is that wouldn't happen because the Democrats flunkys/redheaded stepchildren would go out of business????? The Democrats couldn't let that happen??? Miss out on all those campaign contributions and votes..... LOL.....

Do we have armies around the world costing in the trillions making those areas safe for wind turbine erection and corn growers?

So are you saying you want to cut the militaries budget????? Or are you saying we are spending a lot of money to keep this country safe and free to do whatever we choose????

If a particular state wants to erect wind turbines then let them, I don't have a problem with that it's their decision.... what I don't like is having to pay taxes for subsidies on something that is basically a boondoggle....

And so why do we have to subsidize corn growers????? They can just sell their product as "FOOD" which is a much more worthwhile endeavor than squeezing it to make an "inefficient" fuel supplement.... There are food riots going on around the world, why not ship the corn products to them.......

I'd love to have the military going back to performing it's constitutional duties instead of Bush's smoke screen policy of spreading democracy around the world.

I do know one thing, the Middle East is the biggest foreign problem we face... And if we do nothing we are going to end up regretting it.... So I can't really blame him for trying to help solve the problem, but I don't know if I would have done it his way.....

"Most, not all" of the current military people I know, think it's a good thing we are there..... The Iraqis didn't deserve to have to put up with Saddam, and neither did us or the rest of the world.... And there are a whole lot more characters just like Saddam in that area of the World......

That's like asking the IRS if taxes are a good thing. The military creating foreign policy is in itself a BAD THING.

Why not cut subsidies for oil companies because they don't need them to be profitable?

In this particular instance, I don't see what "FAIR" has to do with it.

Gadaffi hasn't been a threat since Reagan put the fear of God in him....

What Bush did was stupid, if he was going to get rid of Saddam then he should have just done it while we were there instead of pussyfooting around with world opinion.... that was another reason why he didn't get re-elected, along with raising taxes....

Why not cut subsidies for oil companies because they don't need them to be profitable?

In this particular instance, I don't see what "FAIR" has to do with it.

I don't have a problem with doing away with the oil companies "Tax breaks"....

But if you do that then the oil companies will raise the price of their products, to make up for them having to pay more in taxes..... And since the oil companies are getting tax breaks that means the average working stiff is paying more taxes to make up for the taxes not being paid by the oil companies... So no matter what you do, you are paying the same price for a gallon of gas.. You either pay the price at the pump, or pay at the pump "and" to Uncle Sam.... So you need to decide which way makes you "feel better about yourself" for paying the same price for their products... (the same goes for creating electricity)..

Now if you are one of the damn near 50% of the current population who doesn't pay taxes, then I would think you would want the oil companies to be "subsidized" to the hilt. That way you are basically getting gas for free at the taxpayers expense.... (so do you think that's FAIR)????

The way I look at it is if companies need that big of tax breaks to break even or make a small profit then they shouldn't be in business to start with...... (Because their product is basically useless) .... Forcing a useless product onto the consumer is nothing but a big waste of time, and taxpayer money..... Money better spent on research for a "VIABLE" product to replace petroleum products... not the boondoggles we currently have....

I don't think they ever determined that Gadaffi gave the orders to do it, but I know his brother-in-law was tried and convicted in absentia of the plane bombing. Libya ended up paying over $1.5 billion in reparations to the victims of the Lockerbie bombing, German discotheque bombing and Flight 772 bombing...

Libya had 1 or 2 Nuke power plants but no nuclear weapons.....

Libya planned to buy a power station from the Soviet Union, but, dissatisfied with the technology involved, negotiated with the Belgian firm of Belgonucleaire to take over the engineering contract and supply much of the needed equipment. After the United States objected, fearing use of the equipment in weapons development, Belgium decided in 1984 to refuse the US$1 billion contract. Shortly thereafter, Moscow's commitment to construct an 880-megawatt power station to be located in the Sirt [Surt] region was reaffirmed. It was to cost over US$4 billion, with repayment to stretch over 15 to 18 years. In early 1986, however, a plan for the construction of nine 440-megawatt nuclear power plants was suspended indefinitely.

Libya ordered a pilot scale uranium conversion facility in 1984. A Japanese company supplied Libya with the technology. The sale was apparently arranged directly with the Japanese instead of through middlemen.

As of 2002 the assessment of the US Government was that, since the suspension of UN sanctions against Libya in 1999, Libya had been able to increase its access to dual-use nuclear technologies. Although Libya would need significant foreign assistance to acquire a nuclear weapon, Tripoli's nuclear infrastructure enhancement remains of concern. Qaddafi hinted at this in a 25 March 2002 interview with Al-Jazirah when he said, "We demanded the dismantling of the weapons of mass destruction that the Israelis have; we must continue to demand that. Otherwise, the Arabs will have the right to possess that weapon."

A US-led naval operation in October 2003 interdicted a shipment of uranium-enrichment components bound for Libya. US officials say the seizure may have helped prompt Libya to make its pledge to dismantle weapons of mass destruction. The US-led naval operation resulted in the seizure of thousands of uranium-centrifuge parts, bound for Libya, from a German-registered freighter in the Mediterranean. The vessel was seized based on intelligence information that it was carrying nuclear components, and that the interdiction was a major success for the Bush administration's Proliferation Security Initiative, the PSI. Begun in early 2003, the PSI involves the United States and more than a dozen other countries working together to prevent the illicit shipment by sea, land or air of weapons of mass destruction material that might end up in the hands of terrorist groups or rogue states. The source of the centrifuge parts bound for Libya has not been revealed.

On 19 December 2003 Libya agreed to destroy all of its chemical, nuclear, and biological weapons. The surprise announcement followed nine months of secret talks between Libyan, American, and British officials. Libya agreed to abide by the Nuclear Nonproliferation Treaty, and to allow for immediate inspections and monitoring.

First off, any businessman would know that the cost of a "material" can be continually fluctuating and thus he builds margins into his costs to account for price increases.

That's if he knows what he is doing.

Secondly, a tax liability is an unknown cost that cannot be accounted for.

Thirdly, we're talking ~2bln per YEAR. What does that work out to per gallon?

So that means the oil companies "Should" have known the price of a barrel of crude was going to triple, had that figured into their margin, and so they "shouldn't" have had to raise prices?????? LOL.... Yea right!!!
