FRANKFORT, Ky. — U.S. Sen. Rand Paul is proposing elimination of the gasoline tax to ease the financial burden on Americans.

Paul said he intends to make the proposal an amendment to any energy bill that comes before the Senate. He proposes offsetting the lost revenue with a corresponding reduction in foreign aid and corporate welfare.

Such a proposal is a huge longshot because of concerns about losing federal money that goes to maintain and expand the nation's highways.

Great idea.

The single largest 'gouger' on fuel is the US government, not the oil companies.

with a corresponding reduction in foreign aid and corporate welfare.

the devil is in the details. First off, many states are under pressure to raise gas taxes to fund road maintenance. Costs continue to climb thanks to all the road building that has gone on over these last 20 years or so. (See: http://www.governing.com/blogs/politics/The-Stubborn-Gasoline-Tax-Its-Hard- to-Increase-Hard-to-Reduce.html)

Then there's basic math - the federal gas tax of 18.4 cents per gallon brings in about $30 billion a year in revenue, more than the $25 billion U.S. spends on foreign aid in year. But that aid budget includes about $6 billion a year in aid to Israel, which Republicans aren't going to cut.

So even if you get rid of the remaining $19 billion, you then have to make up $11 billion a year by ending "corporate welfare programs," and we just saw what happened when the Democrats tried to end tax breaks for oil companies.

So where is Paul getting the other $11 billion?

"Thats because your basically and idiot."

Paul has a plan to cut 500 billion this year. The other 11 billion would be easy to find imo.

You like Rand Paul?

I'd like to hear the specifics on his plan to "cut corporate welfare." He's in the wrong party if he really wants to cut subsidies/tax breaks to corporations.

How will the roads be maintained without the gasoline tax? By the GOP's reserves of pixie dust?

Maybe Paul's plan is to allow America's roads to turn back into dirt roads? Or will he borrow money to fund pot hole and bridge repairs?

If no corporate welfare exists, then why do you think Paul has a "great idea" to eliminate the federal gas tax and reducing "corporate welfare" to off-set the lost tax revenue? Maybe you didn't read the article again?

Ceasar built Roman roads as an act of socialism. The military built the Roman roads (no private contractors) using tax money.

Republicans really are retards. I mean they know next to nothing about history or facts in general.....

Three quick sources say you're wrong...

Roman roads enabled the Romans to move armies and trade goods and to communicate

Rome made a great deal of money from trade in Europe. Some of this trade involved transport by sea. More frequently, the Romans used roads. Also with so much of Western Europe conquered by the Romans, the Romans needed roads to move their troops around quickly. Poorly built roads would not help this.

Despite the grand spectacle that the road network really was, the original functionality of Roman roads was mainly designed for military exploitation.

Do you have a source?

Oh my god. You seem to think socialism means "welfare" or some such.

Socialism means built by tax dollars by the govt. Anything built by the govt and with govt money is socialism.

Roman legions = socialist entities

Roman roads = socialist constructs

The funding is socialist as is the construction. What I found funny is your misunderstanding revealed how dim witted Republicans view the term socialist. You guys really just make definitions up about words don't you?
