Rand Paul is proposing elimination of the gasoline tax to ease the financial burden on Americans. Paul said he intends to make the proposal an amendment to any energy bill that comes before the Senate. He proposes offsetting the lost revenue with a corresponding reduction in foreign aid and corporate welfare. Such a proposal is a huge longshot because of concerns about losing federal money that goes to maintain and expand the nation's highways. Roman roads enabled the Romans to move armies and trade goods and to communicate Rome made a great deal of money from trade in Europe. Some of this trade involved transport by sea. More frequently, the Romans used roads. Also with so much of Western Europe conquered by the Romans, the Romans needed roads to move their troops around quickly. Poorly built roads would not help this. Despite the grand spectacle that the road network really was, the original functionality of Roman roads was mainly designed for military exploitation.
