LAS VEGAS – Mitt Romney wants his money to show his might. The all-but-declared Republican presidential contender, who has kept his head low for much of the year as he collected cash, raised $10.25 million in a single day Monday after bringing together his network of wealthy donors to dial for dollars in a city with no shortage of them. It's a hefty one-day total that Romney's team hopes will show his strength in the emerging GOP field. Romney's phone bank fundraiser at the Las Vegas Convention Center, much like one during his first attempt at the Republican nomination, was the centerpiece of a series of fundraising events that included a conference call with volunteers who were asked to solicit their friends and neighbors for donations. "This is a big kickoff for us, for our fundraising effort. It's kind of a celebration," Romney told the more than 400 supporters tuned in to watch him host a brief town hall-style broadcast on Facebook. "It's important to me that we get that started, the ball rolling today." In truth, the former Massachusetts governor has spent the better part of the year raising money for a campaign he has yet to officially launch. He's held few political events in recent months, focusing almost entirely on private meetings with donors nationwide. He wants to emerge from the fundraising quarter that ends June 30 having far outraised his rivals, and displaying financial fortitude in hopes that Republicans will choose him to challenge President Barack Obama. The Democrat shattered fundraising records in 2008 and could raise as much as $1 billion for his re-election campaign. A wealthy former businessman and a Mormon, Romney is trying to tap into Wall Street and Mormon donors as well as line up support from influential contributors who fueled the campaigns of George W. Bush and John McCain. It's unclear whether he will invest any of his own fortune into his second campaign. During his 2008 run for the GOP nomination, Romney used more than $40 million of his own money to pay for campaigns in Iowa and New Hampshire. Victories there never materialized, and Romney ended up losing the nomination to McCain. Romney launched that bid with a phone bank fundraiser in Boston in which 400 supporters and Romney raised more than $6.5 million. But while that event was open to reporters, Romney's camp was much more guarded this time in Las Vegas. Aides refused to allow reporters into the phone bank room, and they wouldn't say how much his second White House bid would cost. Volunteers who paid their own way to Las Vegas began trickling into the convention hall before sunrise to dial contacts on the East Coast who were already starting their work day. Romney spent part of his day crisscrossing the phone bank room, which was flanked by two oversize American flags. Hundreds of volunteers called their contacts for credit cards numbers and contribution pledges. A sign read: "Believe in America."

Dems will vote for Romney in the primaries, but not in the general election. Crossover voters did the trick for McCain. I expect a replay of '08, with a neocon bushbot loser nominated. The only hope for positive change is third party, IMO.

The party regulars who actually control the primaries. The GOP always nominates the person who was the runner up in the last Presidential primary. So, it's Romney's turn to be nominated. I will vote for a third party candidate for the 6th time in the last 7 presidential elections. The only time I voted for a GOP candidate (after Reagan in 80 and 84) I regretted it (yes, it was Bush in 2000).
If Romney is nominated, I will also vote 3rd party.

I didn't say it was devious. The GOP like to nominate people they know, who have been around for a while. The Democrats have a history of nominating newbies that you generally never hear from again.
I just cannot, and will not, vote for Romney. Every election, it's the lesser of two evils shell game. The only way to win is to not play that game. If Obama is reelected, at least I will know that I voted for the most conservative ticket on the ballot, and I can almost guarantee that ticket will not include the name Romney.

The problem with the folks who appeal to the far right is that they don't appeal to the other 80% of the country. Look at 1972 as prescient for what's going on in the GOP today. Fresh off the 1968 loss to Nixon the Democrats turned hard left and nominated an ideologically "pure" candidate. The end result: 520-17 EC vote win for RIchard Nixon, and Nixon's approval rating in May of 1971 was around where Obama's is now (50%). Meanwhile poll after poll shows Romney as the guy who runs closest to Obama of any Republican, while Palin gives Obama a shot to win Georgia, Missouri, and even Texas. Maybe the best thing that can happen for the country is for the GOP to nominate a Palin or Bachmann, have them lose 40 states, and then the rest of the GOP that is scared to death of the tea party will realize that you don't win elections by appealing to fringes.

Of the announced candidates, Romney. He's a guy who actually has solid experience, and a solid understanding of issues. I tend to look for pragmatists, not ideologues. Romney is a pragmatist.
