(CNN) -- As the Mississippi River slowly swelled downstream Friday, residents were making preparations for the expected flooding to come, even as federal authorities pondered whether to use a key mechanism to redirect much of the water.

It is "extremely likely" that the Morganza Spillway will be opened by Saturday night or Sunday morning at the latest, Louisiana Gov. Bobby Jindal said Friday. And although he emphsized that no decision had been made, he warned residents in the areas around the spillway to expect flooding and plan accordingly.

Opening the spillway could lower anticipated cresting levels along the lower Mississippi River and divert water away from Baton Rouge and New Orleans, but would flood much of low-lying south-central Louisiana.

Good thing Jindal is a Republican, otherwise he would face intollerable criticism for flooding some areas of his state to save New Orleans.

We all know Jindal is not in favor or volcano monitoring.......

just saw this:

The Morganza Spillway will be opened tomorrow, saving New Orleans and Baton Rouge from catastrophic flooding. Unfortunately, the spillway will flood communities north resulting in 25,000 homeless, destroy 11,000 homes and businesses, and cripple the Alon USA Energy refinery.

Terribly sad.

Terribly sad.

No. It's not.

Everyone in the Flood plain knew the risk.

If it wasn't for the Corp, there wouldn't be anyone but Swamp Cajuns living there now.

Post Sat May 14, 2011 7:39 am by mcgowanjm State Announces Closures and Preparations for Corps Opening Morganza Spillway

BATON ROUGE (May 13, 2011) - Louisiana officials advise citizens to expect road closings and other impacts when the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers opens the Morganza Spillway during the next 24 hours. The state will begin closing impacted roads and restrict public access to some levees in order to protect the public from dangerous conditions.

When the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers opens the Morganza Spillway, the Louisiana Department of Transportation and Development will close the three-mile segment of La. 1 that crosses the Spillway and assist in the inspection of the structure. The closure for the initial Spillway opening is estimated to last for several hours, and it is the only closure of La. 1 currently anticipated.

The detour routes for the closure will be as follows: northbound La. 1 to La. 10 to La. 77 to U.S. 190, and southbound La. 1 to La. 105 to U.S. 190. The detour is approximately 80 miles. The sections of roadway that are part of the detour are either protected by levees or elevated.

The Corps will open Morganza when reports come in of Levee Overtopping. That's why the 'no specific time'. They're reacting to the MS River.

And when you react to the MS River and you've acknowledged that "you're battling it'. 'Fighting a war against it.'

You can pack it in, cause you've lost. In less than 15 hours more water will be going into the Atchafalaya than the 'main' river channel.
