Rep. Ron Paul, a likely Republican presidential candidate known for opposing U.S. military intervention overseas, said if he were president, he would not have duplicated President Obama's plan for taking out the man responsible for the Sept. 11, 2001, terror attacks.

In a radio interview Tuesday, Paul suggested the U.S. government could have worked with Pakistan to secure Usama bin Laden's capture instead of unilaterally entering the country and killing him -- despite concerns that the Pakistanis could have tipped him off.

"It was absolutely not necessary," Paul said of the May 1 CIA-led Navy SEALs raid.

Paul said the United States should have gone after bin Laden the same way it went after Khalid Sheikh Mohammed, architect of the Sept. 11 attacks, by working with the Pakistan government.

I love Ron Paul and supported him in 1988, but I'm going to call him out on this.

Paul has said from the very beginning of 9/11 that the way to deal with bin Laden is through the Constitutionally sanctioned means of "Letters of Marque and Reprisal".

What does "reprisal" mean? According to Wikipedia:

In international law, a reprisal is a limited and deliberate violation of international law to punish another sovereign state that has already broken them. Reprisals in the laws of war are extremely limited, as they commonly breached the rights of civilians... Reprisals refer to acts which are illegal if taken alone, but become legal when adopted by one state in retaliation for the commission of an earlier illegal act by another state. Counter-reprisals are generally not allowed.

The Constitution allows the U.S. government to take such limited action.

Shooting bin Laden in the head is justified reprisal. No ifs, ands, or buts.

Ron Paul is completely out-to-lunch on this. Completely.

I disagree. What he said makes perfect sense.

What he said makes perfect sense.

A.) How so?

B.) What he said was completely inconsistent with what he has been saying since 9/11

A.) How so?

I'll answer your question with a question.

Would it be a better thing to capture Bin Laden or kill him on the spot? Think about it.

If you read James' stuff, it is possible that we did capture him...with the cover story out there of his assassination.

Would it be a better thing to capture Bin Laden or kill him on the spot?

But that's not the point Paul was making in this interview. He said that he would have worked with the corrupt Pakistani government (which includes a lot of extremists) to bring bin Laden to justice.

bin Laden would have escaped.

Look, I am against the death penalty because I don't think the government has the right to kill American citizens.

bin Laden is not an American citizen. He doesn't live in America. He used his inheritance to plot and execute the murder of over 3,000 people, from abroad. It was an act of war, and an ugly one because he targeted civilians.

Ron Paul has been right since 9/11 -- REPRISAL. Not getting bogged down in Afghanistan. Certainly not nation building in Iraq. REPRISAL.

We did that. BRAVO.

Now, Ron Paul is changing his tune. I'm beginning to think that he's really a pacifist rather than a constitutionalist.

Okay. Tell me again why we're in Iraq and Afghanistan.

With that, I'm out of here for a while.

Agreed. I donated to his 2008 campaign before he had raised his first half-million, and I think he has some good ideas/perspectives, but between this and his goal of abolishing the federal reserve, I think he's gone off the reservation.

The federal Reserve is clearly unconstitutional.

Go back and read the constitution. Do not pass go do not collect 200 dollars.

Which makes you left-brained, and therefore, a lefty!

:-)

But hey, Badeye says those that believe that the government is lying about 9/11 are the left's equivalent to "birthers" on the right. So that makes you a flaming liberal!

Fred Mertz, jw is correct - the point is not the actual raid - but asking Pakistan first to get permission to raid - Bin Laden could still have died if the Pakistanis gave the green light but we all know the Pakis would have tipped off Osama.
