The ACA is largely derived from what Romney did in MA, coupled with the Heritage Foundation's proposals around buying pools. But, Obama is a Democrat, so these ideas are now "socialist." As with the stimulus, Obama made the mistake of trying to craft a proposal that would win Republican support, and failed, adopting bad ideas such as the individual mandate in the process. We would all be a lot better off right now if Obama had focused on the public option as the centerpiece of reform. Still, Republicans have a big problem on their hands as support for repeal is falling, and people are finding they like some of the components of the ACA, including allowing children to stay on insurance longer, blocking companies from rescinding policies, and forcing coverage for pre-existing conditions. Even Romney today will say he still support pre-existing coverage requirements. "Thats because your basically and idiot."
