WASHINGTON -- Former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney (R) is set to defend his state's health care law from conservative critics in a high-profile speech on Thursday. But Romney is far from being the potential 2012 Republican presidential contender with the most politically problematic record on health care.

That title likely belongs to former House Speaker Newt Gingrich (R-Ga.), who announced his White House aspirations a day prior to Romney's address.

In his post-congressional life, Gingrich has been a vocal champion for mandated insurance coverage -- the very provision of President Obama's health care legislation that the Republican Party now decries as fundamentally unconstitutional.

It's funny until you realize the Repubs are too stupid to get the joke.

yep. The ACA is largely derived from what Romney did in MA, coupled with the Heritage Foundation's proposals around buying pools.

But, Obama is a Democrat, so these ideas are now "socialist."

As with the stimulus, Obama made the mistake of trying to craft a proposal that would win Republican support, and failed, adopting bad ideas such as the individual mandate in the process. We would all be a lot better off right now if Obama had focused on the public option as the centerpiece of reform.

Still, Republicans have a big problem on their hands as support for repeal is falling, and people are finding they like some of the components of the ACA, including allowing children to stay on insurance longer, blocking companies from rescinding policies, and forcing coverage for pre-existing conditions. Even Romney today will say he still support pre-existing coverage requirements.

Obama made a political decision to triangulate and co-opt the Republicans out of an issue. That is why the Repubs went bat shit xrazy with the socialist talk which backfired.
