Title: No Breakfast For Kids Wearing ‘Wrong’ Shoes At Grade School

CHICAGO (CBS) — Chicago Public Schools is apologizing to a Chicago mother and her two young sons, ages 5 and 6, after they were denied breakfast because they came to schools wearing the wrong kind of shoes. CBS 2’s Dorothy Tucker reports. The Nicholson brothers only grab a quick snack before heading to class because they qualify for a full free breakfast at Adam Powell Grade School. It’s something they look forward to every day, and it hurt when they were recently turned away. They were wearing black athletic shoes. The boys told their mom that the assistant principal, Angela Peagler wouldn’t let them eat because their shoes didn’t fit the school uniform, which calls for a regular black dress shoe. “I felt sad. We’re always supposed to have breakfast,” first-grader Noah Nicholson says. Noah and his brother Niko, who is in kindergarten, went to class hungry and didn’t eat until lunch. "It hasn’t been a problem all this time and all of a sudden they can’t have breakfast because of their shoes,” Kahlia Edwards, the boys’ mother, says. Edwards says the boys have been wearing the shoes all year and administrators never complained. She’s confused. The boy’s great aunt is livid. “I don’t care if they had on orange shoes, they were in line to eat,” Robin Price says. “I’m not going to feed you because you have the wrong shoes? Shoes? No, no.” CBS 2 tried to ask both the assistant principal and Principal Derek Jordan to explain what happened. They wouldn’t. However, a manager at the CPS regional office spoke with reporter Tucker. Area 17 Management Support Director Darryl Earl says Peagler told him she thought the boys had returned to the breakfast but he acknowledged she was wrong. “Regardless of what shoes they were wearing, obviously the children should have been allowed the opportunity to merge into breakfast,” he says. Monday afternoon, the principal and the assistant principal apologized to the boys and their mother. They went on to explain that they were reacting to an increase in students violating the school dress code. The principal even offered to buy the boys new black shoes. But here’s the kicker: The school’s dress code does not say the shoes have to be black dress shoes. The boys’ mother says the principal obviously needs to make the rules clearer.

Yeah, a no common sense interpretation of a strict uniform dress code that loses sight of what the reason fr that uniform was for is wrong. The shoes look like normal kids shoes. I don't like the logo personally, but what business is that of mine to ever tell someone that? In any event, I'm glad they eventually came to their senses and apologize.
If the kids welfare broodmare mama had fed her little moochers with the food stamps she'd already been issued for the month instead of trading them for crack, cigarettes, booze, tats, a 46" flat screen to watch Oprah on, and the Air Jordans the kids had on then they wouldn't need the free breakfast and could wear what ever shoes they wanted to.
The boys mother needs to feed her own Goddamn chil-runs! The bitch is no doubt getting public aid,so let her spend it feeding her chil-runs instead of using it to buy hair extensions or nails.

That bitch mother should apologize for sending her kids off to school hungry. It is the PARENTS responsibility to feed and clothe their spawn,NOT the schools.

It is the PARENTS responsibility to feed and clothe their spawn,NOT the schools. What you said is true. But she didn't. No need to not feed these two kids when they are feeding the rest of them. It isn't their fault if their mom is a deadbeat. That is a big IF.
Yes, I know if you were in charge no child you capriciously dislike would go hungry. That's the point of what the problem is here; it's intolerance, and hatred. The point is to give kids food which they need to do well in school. And it can't be done with narrow, mean spirited judge-mentalist stances like yours. If you want to give the kids a chance to get educated to climb socially and economically in life, you make sure they get what the minimally need to do well in school. Thanks for using yourself as an example of the sort of person who should never have a job enforcing rules in public schools.

The school had led her to believe they would be fed that morning and didn't based on very shallow thinking and owed her an apology. They is really no other way to look at this that makes sense.
You are missing the point,which is the school shouldn't be feeding ANY of them. The government is NOT their family,and crap like this teaches the kids that the government is their mother and father. Programs like school lunches just tear families apart while strengthening the hand of Big Gubbermint. If parents want respect,they have to earn it.

The problem here is the schools/government isn't the mother and father of those children.

But that's not what the article is about. Making children bear the brunt for adult decisions is what this article is about and what some posters here condone.
Back in the old days public schools didn't have school uniforms IIRC. They had dress codes.
Maybe Obama will have a beer with all parties.
The chil-runs have learned the valuable lesson that socialism will let you down. They'll probably grow up to be capitalist crack dealers, like their daddy.
I recall a re-run of MASH I saw where this uber right winger named Colonel Flagg... The lessons they will probably retain though is that socialism is only considered good if it can be taken advantage of by corporations. Drug dealers and CEO's are no different.... it's really about the love of the deal.
