For the first time in Gallup history, more Republicans than Democrats support a new third major political party, according to a new Gallup survey.

Fifty-two percent of Republicans say they support a third party because the two major parties do such "a poor job" of representing the people. Just 33 percent of Democrats felt similarly--and, as expected, self-described independents were the most forceful backers of a third party, with 68 percent indicating support.

Gallup reports this is the first time "a significantly higher percentage of Republicans than Democrats" favor a third party.

The poll suggests that tea party supporters are driving this change: Sixty percent of tea party supporters say a third party is necessary, compared with 44 percent of tea party opponents.

In the 2010 elections, many Americans voted for tea party-affiliated candidates over establishment Republicans in primaries across the country. But the tea party shuns organization and formal structure, which will greatly complicate attempts to make it into a formal party any time soon. Even far more concerted third-party movements have historically made a negligible impact on the current two-party American political system.

Americans who don't feel at home with either party have several new organizations to which to turn this cycle, including the centrist "No Limits" group, founded by Democratic fundraiser Nancy Jacobson and GOP strategist Mark McKinnon and advised by famous centrists such as Republican-turned Independent Michael Bloomberg, mayor of New York City.

Overall, a majority of Americans--52 percent--say a third party is necessary, with just 40 percent saying that the two major parties do an "adequate job" representing them. The total number of Americans who support a third party is down from August, when 58 percent supported the idea. (1 image)

When communism fell the party was split into two major factions.

Faction A wanted to end communism because it did not work.

Faction B wanted to become even more communist because they felt communism collapsed because the party ideology had become diluted.

That is the predicament the modern GOP is in.

The Tea Party is the faction that won't accept conservative ideology failed so want to ramp it up and go full bore right wing thinking that will work (tax cuts did not generate economic growth? Obviously taxes were not cut enough! Cut taxes even more! - that sort of craziness).

The GOP does have factions that realize the small govt, trickle down ideology failed but they are fewer and they have left the party (like I did).

Wrong, they've rejected the neocon bushbot libtard philosophy, and are seeking a return to a conservative and constitutional form of government. What they're missing, is a party to represent them.

Neocon or paleocon - it is a failed ideology. Now the Tea Party is doing what the Marxits/Commies did when the USSR collapsed. The commies if you recall (you probably don't) were declaring the reason the USSR failed was because they were never really pure Marxist or pure Communist. That if they really carried out actual Marxist policies and were strident about it the USSR and communism would thrive.

It is like being in a hole and the hole digger is deluded enough to think he can get out of the hole by doubling his effort and digging deeper.

Case in point. Tax cuts did not stimulate or add jobs to the economy nor did it increase revenue by growing the economy via investments. Thus the theory is a proven failure (especially since Clinton raised taxes and the economy grew, etc back in the 90s). But the Republican ideological reaction is to declare that the tax cuts were not deep enough and if we only cut deeper then we will see this promised result.

The Republicans/Conservatives right now are doubling down on failure because they don't want to admit, can't admit, that their ideology is failed and unworkable.
