Now, I pass school supplies drives run by schools, begging for paper and pencils. WTF? Where does the money go? I'll tell you: into bank accounts as graft. It used to be when life was short people married in their teens and died in their twenties so the ages where you would be the most sexually active was one where people were in wedlock. But now teen brides are rare and in most cases illegal in America so the old model does not work any more. I read a study on this. Our grandparents and great grandparents weren't more chaste. It's that they got married young. I don't get why the Republicans (outside of religious kook reasons) can't do what every scientifically based advance nation does and teach sex education and encourage condom use. It is estimated that up to 30% of puritan brides were pregnant when they married. Who knows how many did the nasty and didn't get pregnant. Neither contraception nor abortion was acceptable to puritans, though both were known. To: lucysmom (#53) Well Canada just passed a law raising the age of sexual consent - raising - not lowering. The low age of consent had existed on the books since colonial times. That means in a way the Canadians actually have become more prudish than their ancestors. Back then there was no in-between age. You were a child then when puberty hit you were considered an adult (Jews are men at 13 years old for example). "Teenager" is a modern invention and modern people are prolonging the coming of age for modern social reasons but biology is not paying attention.
