NEW YORK — Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood has announced nearly $800 million in projects improve rail service in the crowded Northeast.

The announcement Monday at Penn Station is part of a $2 billion award going to rail projects in 15 states nationwide. It was money originally awarded to Florida but rescinded after the governor canceled rail plans there.

The Northeast's share will be used to upgrade train speeds from 135 mph to 160 mph on critical segments.

He says the money will indirectly improve service on other commuter lines by making shared electrical lines and other infrastructure more reliable.

LaHood notes the Transportation Department received nearly 100 applications for federal rail money. He says it's evidence the United States is hungry for better rail service.

Great news - thank you Florida for electing Rick Scott, who's actions have caused your rail money to head to the Northeast instead of creating jobs in Florida.

Why spend two billion dollars we don't have on another government fiasco? Just sell AMTRAK to the private sector. Or do you statists just like collecting taxes?

Scott's own transportation department just released a study indicating the rail line between Tampa and Orlando would have been profitable, and would have created jobs in Florida.

How many jobs? Short-term construction? We don't have $2,000,000,000 to spend on high-speed rail. SELL AMTRAK if you want rail service!

Are you aware that the rail line Scott killed would have been privately operated?

Amtrak is profitable in the NE corridor, where Amtrak loses money is on routes that Congress mandates it maintain. If you want to reform Amtrak, let it actually act as a private company and kill off unprofitable routes.

It's these rural Red State areas that lose us money. The areas where Palin thinks resemble her idea of America are in actuality welfare zones for Blue State money transfers.

I am more than willing to cut these rubes off and let them die on the vine. The free market already designated those areas as no go zones.

If the Tennessee Valley was profitable, for example, the private sector would have built an electrical generating damn there but they didn't, If not for the New Deal, all those rube hicks would still be reading (those that could read without Federal education money) by oil lamps.

43 Amtrak lines.

41 lost money last year.

Yep, hopefully the GOP-controlled house allows Amtrak to stop serving unprofitable routes.

We actually agree with that.

But as it relates to new light rail lines...thats reinforcing failure.

No thanks. Glad Kasich killed it here in Ohio.

You are one of the few given his approval rating is what, 30% now?

Locally, certain not to happen is construction of a $15 million facility planned for Columbus by US Railcar Co. The plant would have employed up to 200 when fully staffed, said Mike Pracht, president and chief executive officer of the Columbus-based railroad-car manufacturer.

-------

The Cleveland developer Forest City Enterprises was planning projects that would create $180 million of taxable property. Dayton, OH anticipated around $250 million worth of downtown development around the rail station and, in Columbus, OH, the rail line “was expected to spur business development” and “provide a link between Downtown and Port Columbus.” But, as Forest City’s spokesman put it, “Clearly, it won’t happen now. It’s a governmental decision.”

I don't pay attention to polling data on somebody thats been in office five months, given its a four year term, GO.

We'll see what happens when SB5 is put on a ballot. I suspect it will go down in flames and reaffirm what Kasich is doing here. That, not light rail, is the big deal in Ohio politics these days.

Boofer predicted that Robert Gibbs would be gone by June of 2009...based upon his first briefing...unless, of course, the FR database lies...

Pointing out when Badeye's predictions have been wrong is so easy, a caveman could do it. :-)

Remember, unemployment was supposed to be over 10% by now.

Given the results, had Owe-bama been competent, he would have replaced Gibbs. I did give him more credit, based largely in how he had tossed so many others 'under the bus'.

haven't made that mistake since.

And considering you two numb nuts 'predicted' Bush would be a one termer...puleese.

As for the dwarf...I'm still laughing at what happened to him over the weekend.

I did.

Missed it by Ken Blackwell cheating...still waiting for that mandated recount.

I did predict that the dems would retake the Congress in the 2006 cycle. I also predicted the beginning of the Boy Blunder Depression as December of 2007. I predicted McCain would be the 2008 nominee - that was fading Boofer's prediction that he wouldn't be, though. I predicted McCain would pick a female VP and was correct. I never imagined Palin, tho. I believed it would be Snowe or Collins though.

I also predict Boofer will keep claiming that I gad a bad weekend...as if that's supposed to mean something.
