Title: $2B for rail projects, speed upgrades announced

NEW YORK — Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood has announced nearly $800 million in projects improve rail service in the crowded Northeast.

The announcement Monday at Penn Station is part of a $2 billion award going to rail projects in 15 states nationwide. It was money originally awarded to Florida but rescinded after the governor canceled rail plans there.

The Northeast's share will be used to upgrade train speeds from 135 mph to 160 mph on critical segments.

He says the money will indirectly improve service on other commuter lines by making shared electrical lines and other infrastructure more reliable.

LaHood notes the Transportation Department received nearly 100 applications for federal rail money. He says it's evidence the United States is hungry for better rail service.

Whats hilarious is the hidden expense associated with the so called 'green cars'.

Those batteries those things use have a limited life, and when when they finally get used up, you might as well just buy a new car.

Now, I know I’m not going to change the minds of any of the True Believers…those who read all of Reverend Al’s sermons, and say things like, “You know, global warming can mean warmer OR colder, wetter OR drier, cloudier OR sunnier, windier OR calmer, …”. Can I get an ‘amen’??

I travel 12 miles to work and ride a bicycle because that is too short a distance to use my WIndstar for such a purpose.

Currently I have the car insurance turned off for the time being and am keeping it parked. I am almost done remanufacturing a Volkswagan Beetle I recued from a field. I bench tested a motor I re-build for it two weeks ago.

My last one I had taken by the city for storage on the street when I was working in Portland and just let it go as they wanted 1800 dollars for towing and storage by the time I found out the person I had watching it had let me down.

I like them because I can work myself on them, and because as a light plane pilot I have a soft spot for air cooled engines.

The Windstar is great, drove it to LA a few months ago and was sold to me for a dollar to aviod the gift tax by a friend who sympathized with me for the loss of my 73 SuperBeetle.

My new toy is a 1963 Standard Beetle, and I had to do a complete pan replacement on the body and remove two Mexican steel fenders with used German originals, but it was worth it.

I'll sell the Ford this summer and put that one to use next winter. My joking on your prefered car is something you should take with a grain of salt and with some humor. Relax.

I have a favorite car too. I even have a collection of all their ads from the 60s and 70s. Some of which are frames and on my wall.

High speed rail is a great idea that is long overdue.

Of course. Alas, the US government has been interested ONLY pissing it's tax dollars away on International Manifest Destiny with wars EVERYWHERE that go nowhere but creating bullet and missile factories.

Meanwhile the shortsighted vision of and about American requirements has been blinded by politicians whose only interest has been their own pocketbooks and power base.

Energy, transportation and infra-structure and other American interests are sorely lacking in America. Europe is a model of handling these requirements with their integrated inter-national high speed rail system that is on-time and frequent. My wife and I love it; who needs an automobile in Europe?

That's exactly right. Last time I was there I got by with a eurail pass and a bicycle.

I took over a 1958 Flying Scot I could get a higher re-sell price for in Europe than here and sold it at a profit before returning.

Yep, hopefully the GOP-controlled house allows Amtrak to stop serving unprofitable routes.

Yep.

Somebody told me those using these pieces of shit green cars have to make up the lost tax revenue due to not using gasoline, but I've never seen any documentation of that.

But the bottom line is they are far more expensive in the end than most gas only powered vehicles.

My new toy is a 1963 Standard Beetle,

Thats cool. Had a 68 beetle back in the late 70's, then my first VW Kombie (spelling?) Van...had the crank window slats in the back. It was perfect back then. Later in the mid 80's, traded a CJ5 for another one of those vans, did a ton of 'car camping' out of it with my wife.

Honestly, I'd love to get another old style VW today. If for no other reason than no computer chips.

You are one of the few given his approval rating is what, 30% now?

http://dispatchpolitics.com/live/content/local_news/stories/2011/01/01/copy/killing-train-kills- private-projects.html?adsec=politics&sid=101

Locally, certain not to happen is construction of a $15 million facility planned for Columbus by US Railcar Co. The plant would have employed up to 200 when fully staffed, said Mike Pracht, president and chief executive officer of the Columbus-based railroad-car manufacturer.

-------

The Cleveland developer Forest City Enterprises was planning projects that would create $180 million of taxable property. Dayton, OH anticipated around $250 million worth of downtown development around the rail station and, in Columbus, OH, the rail line “was expected to spur business development” and “provide a link between Downtown and Port Columbus.” But, as Forest City’s spokesman put it, “Clearly, it won’t happen now. It’s a governmental decision.”

I don't pay attention to polling data on somebody thats been in office five months, given its a four year term, GO.

We'll see what happens when SB5 is put on a ballot. I suspect it will go down in flames and reaffirm what Kasich is doing here. That, not light rail, is the big deal in Ohio politics these days.

Not when you factor in the military spending required to keep oil supply lines open.

And, for some odd reason those who bash Amtrak turn a blind eye to the fact that absent government support, air travel in the U.S. wouldn't be a viable business for anyone other than small charter airlines.

Why must Amtrack make money while the highway system is 100% socialized?

Over the last 30 years the U.S. has spent about $30 billion subsidizing Amtrak.

During that same period of time, it has spent about $1.9 trillion subsidizing air and road travel. If you look at the DOT budget, about 80% of it goes to air/road travel support.

Get back to me when you can cite the number for 'roads' specifically the interstate system, which is what we are discussing.

And be sure to include the number of jobs, wages applied, then the dollar amount for what is transported via the interstate system.

And included all federal taxes realized per gallon of gasoline.

For the entire decade you are specifically (give me dates from and to) citing.

Missed it by Ken Blackwell cheating...still waiting for that mandated recount.

I did predict that the dems would retake the Congress in the 2006 cycle. I also predicted the beginning of the Boy Blunder Depression as December of 2007. I predicted McCain would be the 2008 nominee - that was fading Boofer's prediction that he wouldn't be, though. I predicted McCain would pick a female VP and was correct. I never imagined Palin, tho. I believed it would be Snowe or Collins though.

I also predict Boofer will keep claiming that I gad a bad weekend...as if that's supposed to mean something.
