HUCKABEE: Ronald Reagan would have a very difficult, if not impossible time being nominated in this atmosphere of the Republican party.

HEMMER: How come?

HUCKABEE: Because he raises taxes as governor, he made deals with Democrats, he compromised on things in order to move the ball down the field. As president, he gave amnesty to 7 million illegal immigrants. There were many things that would have been anathema. People speak of Reagan as if he was absolutely steadfast. He was in his convictions, but you have to govern in a way that is different that is different than the way you campaign.

He gave state employees one of their biggest pay hikes and paved the way for collective bargaining. But as pres he let the S and Ls steal old peoples savings, so he was returned to the GOP grace.

Dear Huckster:

So would Honest Abe. And Thomas Jefferson would have a hard time winning a general election. (given the politically illiterate state of the US electorate.)

So what's you point?

Yours truly,
G.O.D.

I think you completely missed his point.

Republicans are going around touting Reagan as second only to Jesus Christ on the "greatest people whoever lived scale", yet as Huckabee correctly noted, someone holding Reagan's views and possessing his legislative record would quickly be deemed a "RINO" and would be unwelcome in the party, especially at Tea Party events.

Or maybe you can point me to a pro-abortion Republican who has a record of raising taxes, increasing social welfare spending, and compromising with Democrats who is currently beloved by Conservatives?

Beautiful observation.

The closest thing to Jefferson at this point... is Ron Paul (gasp!).

No I didn't. I ignored it.

Reagan was neither the Einstein that some want to make him out to be, nor was he the dolt that you statists at the time said he was.

What he was, was someone who KNEW what he believed, was CONFIDENT in what he believed, could ARTICULATE what he believed, and he had a unique gift to cause some who might have opposed him to end up supporting him (or at least voting for him. Ever hear of "Reagan Democrats?")

On top of that, he had a self-deprecating sense of humor that was charming.

All of these traits plus the fact he ran against the hapless Jimmy Carter and then Carter's VP Mondale made him a winner.

But was he perfect? No, of course not. And at the end of his eight years, maybe THE RATE of government growth was slowed, but it grew, nonetheless.

Or maybe you can point me to a pro-abortion Republican who has a record of raising taxes, increasing social welfare spending, and compromising with Democrats who is currently beloved by Conservatives?
I can point you to a whole party of them. They're called . . . . democrats. (look at the so-called conservatives lauding Obama's endless wars)

Yes - now they're OBAMA's!

Huckleberry is simply trying to deflect from his miserable record of pardoning people who went on to rape and murder others.

No thanks.

The war mongering ones seem to have no problem with democrat Obama and his democrat party hacks' endless wars, so the answer is yes.

And your faux concern about the tea party having excessive influence is laughable. You really need to turn off MSNBC.

Don't worry - Romney (or the Huckster himself) will be the nominee. Bank on it. It's their turn.

Are they "democrat lite" enough for you?

I happen to agree with you, and Conservatives like Limbaugh will fall all over themselves, once again, to endorse him.

I made a point to listen to Limbaugh today as I wanted to see what he'd say about the debate.

As expected, he didn't even mention Ron Paul or Gary Johnson. Instead he promoted Herman Cain (which was okay), and Pawlenty and Santorum (which was not)

You know Limbaugh will support whoever the GOP nominee is (unless it's Ron Paul - which it won't be.)

In any other year, I'd criticize him for that. But with Obama running? Nah . . .

Pure BullBarack. Reagan had a hard time back THEN winning the presidency even after winning the Republican nomination because of the RINO's (called Country Club Republicans back then) in the Republican Party hated and feared him,so they saddled him with that bastard Poppy Bush in order to keep the RINO foot in the door.

Reagan granted amnesty to illegals already living and working in the country in an agreement with the Dim-controlled congress that it would be a one-time deal and Congress would agree to a clamp down on illegal immigration.

As is usual with the Dims, they lied and knew they were lying when they made the agreement. Now you Dims are claiming the amnesty was Reagans idea.

Reagan was saddled with a Vice President that was and is a traitor, and a Congress that also qualified as traitors. Given those conditions,it is remarkable that he managed to accomplish as much as he did.
