The first intelligence from the treasure trove of computers and hard drives found during the raid on Osama bin Laden's Pakistani hideaway has prompted a warning that al-Qaida wanted to attack the US rail network. The Department of Homeland Security sent a warning on Thursday to American law enforcement officials that material dating back to February 2010 had detailed an al-Qaida aspiration to derail trains in the US by damaging the rails at a valley or bridge so they would crash, the Associated Press and NBC news reported. Other material suggested a desire to attack mass transit hubs; a fact long known by terror experts. The idea was apparently at the "aspirational" stage and had not developed into anything concrete. The information appears to be the first widely circulated intelligence pulled from the 1 May raid on Bin Laden's secret compound. After killing Bin Laden, Navy Seals took computers, DVDs and documents from his house. Intelligence experts are combing through the material searching for any signs of current or future al-Qaida activity. Security officials in the Obama administration have repeatedly warned of the ongoing threat posed by al-Qaida in the wake of the death of its leader as well as the prospect that it could be plotting revenge attacks for his demise. One of the reasons behind the decision not to publish a photo of Bin Laden's body was the idea that it could provoke retaliation from Islamist militant sympathisers. But officials have also stressed that they have no knowledge of any specific imminent plot or threat. "We have no information of any imminent terrorist threat to the US rail sector, but wanted to make our partners aware of the alleged plotting. It is unclear if any further planning has been conducted since February of last year," said Matthew Chandler, a spokesman for the Department of Homeland Security.

Yeah, no doubt the valuable intelligence gathered will continue to give nightmares to people who like their presidents to waterboard people to only get faulty intelligence nightmares. It will forever notify them if this causes the American people to always demand their presidents to be adults instead of smirky little cruel and intellectually lazy puppets like Bush.
I want high speed rail. I use Amtrak all the time. I'd love it if the trip to Portland from Eugene was much faster and efficient.
Using high speed rail is one of the best things about visiting Europe. That and being able to go nearly anywhere you want on rail, the underground, or tram.

Fortunately, we have Government Rail which is so tied up in red tape and bankruptcy not to mention the inefficiency endemic to all collectivist application there is no danger of Al Qaida screwing with it. Its already been attacked by America hating losers who want to bring this country down: liberal Democrats.

You mean to say you think it's a shame truckers use their influence to get Congress to try and hobble the railroad system to keep from losing business to them? If that is what you are saying I'd have to agree with you. Or are you now going to explain how Joe Biden was chosen as VPOTUS as a cover for a diabolical Obama conspiracy to do in the railroads and Amtrak?
It's funny, because the rail and transit systems I'm most familiar with in Europe are in Germany and are government run. They work perfectly, they run on time, they're clean, and they're a pleasure to use. Here I won't get on a bus because they're so slow and unreliable, and the travel time by train from SF to LA is an unknown quantity because passenger rail here is a second class service.

I ride acela between D.C. and NY many times a year, while it's not technically "high speed rail" I would always choose it over flying.
"Thats because your basically and idiot." Here on the west coast passenger rail "shares" the tracks with freight trains, and always has to make way for them. That's why you can never tell how long a trip is going to take. I've had friends leave from Central California heading to Seattle arriving six hours late, missing their connection, then having to camp out in the station overnight. It's not something most people do again.

You would have to connect the dots between those apples and oranges for me to know what you are referring to.

The auto industry killed mass transit in the policy called the motorization of America. By 1971 the trucking industry and Interstate highway system had the 18 main passenger railroad companies on the skids financially and on the way out. And it was Republican President Nixon who engaged in this corporate welfare' you whine about. We need railroads, and I'm glad passenger rail service has lasted long enough to become part of the future where it becomes part of the answer to free us from our collective addiction to oil as it cuts traffic on the road and highway system in this country. I hope it becomes a viable privately owed transportation system, and high speed rail lines will do just that for the passenger rail system.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but didn't that Commie Federal Government give land grants to the transcontinental railroads in the mid 1800's ? If my information is correct I believe the railroads received a 400 foot right of way plus ten square miles of land for every mile of track built. It looks like the damn Commies have been running the US government for longer than we thought, even before there even were Commies.

Acela is a reliable 2:45 between D.C. and NYC, and very comfortable.

Flying is a joke unless you live near LA or SF, and driving in LA or Bay Area traffic is a pain in the ass. Hell, until recently even BART in the Bay Area didn't go all the way to the Oakland or San Francisco airports.

BART to Oakland is "interesting", I've taken it a few times. Yeah, high speed rail from SFO to San Jose, and then down to LA would make a great deal of sense; as would a high speed line connecting the NE Corridor with Chicago.

I think Amtrak needs it more. We need the infrastructure investment to insure a key element that is needed for energy independence and to reduce pollution. Besides, the Seals never in a million years would need that kind of huge funding.

You need not worry, the NeoCons have everyone beat. Besides, I became a paratrooper in the 82nd Airborne Division in 1977. What would make you think some you look down on because of their political outlook don't also know the basics like movement to contact too? One need only look at how high speed rail quickly becomes indispensable where it exists to know that it is your brand of loser thinking that is myopic and has the health of the healthiest dodo bird around today. It will pay for itself many times over.
You were just begging for Amtrak money. And where does it exist indispensably?

In Ohio they turned the "old, abandoned" railroad tracks into bicycle paths, a much better use of the land..... exercise is good for the mind and body, it makes "CRITICAL THINKING" easy...... The fat Liberals should think about doing the same thing with the useless tracks in their states too......
