We have received several e-mails today calling into question the validity of the PDF that the White House released, namely that there are embedded layers in the document. There are now several other people on the case. We looked into it and dismissed it. The PDF is composed of multiple images. That’s correct. Using a photo editor or PDF viewer of your choice, you can extract this image data, view it, hide it, etc. But these layers, as they’re being called, aren’t layers in the traditional photo-editing sense of the word. They are, quite literally, pieces of image data that have been positioned in a PDF container. They appear as text but also contain glyphs, dots, lines, boxes, squiggles, and random garbage. They’re not combined or merged in any way. Quite simply, they look like they were created programmatically, not by a human. What’s plausible is that somewhere along the way — from the scanning device to the PDF-creation software, both of which can perform OCR (optical character recognition) — these partial/pseudo-text images were created and saved. What’s not plausible is that the government spent all this time manufacturing Obama’s birth certificate only to commit the laughably rookie mistake of exporting the layers from Photoshop, or whatever photo editing software they are meant to have used. It’s likely that whoever scanned the birth certificate in Hawaii forgot to turn off the OCR setting on the scanner. Let’s leave it at that. UPDATE: I’ve confirmed that scanning an image, converting it to a PDF, optimizing that PDF, and then opening it up in Illustrator, does in fact create layers similar to what is seen in the birth certificate PDF. You can try it yourself at home.

It is ridiculous to assume that whoever went to the trouble of layering the BC for whatever reason was so stupid that they forgot to merge the layers is ridiculous. What probably happened is someone forgot to turn off the OCR setting on the scanner. But you are going to believe what you want to believe, so thanks for demonstrating you can fool some of the people some of the time, but not all of the people all of the time ;-)

What about the state officials in Hawaii and they too in this "forgery" conspiracy?
I don't know why, but the document has obviously been altered. Zoom your PDF reader in on the top right where it shows "61 10641" and you would have to be blind not to see the last digit was pasted into the image. It has pixelation typical of a JPG image that the majority of the image doesn't have. There is at least one other occurrence of this in the document.
Find the forger and you'll find your answer. Or maybe you don't want an answer.

The question never asked is: why create a PDF file in the first place? Just do a HiRes scan from Hawaii to the White House web page. The only reason to make it a PDF document is so it can be manipulated, as you noticed.

It doesn't have to be in PDF format to be manipulated. But whoever did it could have done a much better job. This is way too obvious.
A simple, one dimensional scan tampered with would have been more obvious. Too many people are watching. Why make the same obvious errors, forgery after forgery? Not even they're that weak.

From thei site instructing the nuances of English: We can use 'should have' to talk about past events that did not happen. These two infinatives, 'to be' and 'to have' are always a headache for many people. Learning the irregular verbs that have etre (to be) and avoir (to have) in French was my first headache when learning that language. But thanks anyway Fred. ;-)

You don't see as many calenders anymore either. I myself look at the desktop of any computer I have with me to check the date, so I know why. My nephew gave me a funny look a few years ago when I gave him a wristwatch as a present as I noticed he never wore one. I did when he asked why I never use the Android I got last December as a gift. He noticed I have only a cheap Cricket phone I have set on 'pay-go,' and I that I rarely have it with me. I did train him not to bother sending any text messaged though. I refuse to use that phone function. I miss the pay phone age. I can't stand cell phones.
