Title: Michele Bachmann is wrong about oil; There's more to the oil-reserve story than Bachmann suggests.

U.S. Rep. Michele Bachmann, our newest lawyer-turned-petroleum-geologist, is critical of the Brazil policy of another would-be geologist lawyer, President Obama ("There's oil here at home, but Obama would go abroad," April 26).

But Obama's motive in offering to help Brazil "develop these oil reserves" is to gain profitable business for the U.S. oil and oil-services industries.

Brazil's offshore Santos Basin holds the world's largest oil discovery in more than a decade. The business opportunity for U.S. petroleum technology is substantial.

Bachmann continues to go astray discussing U.S. oil reserves. The best estimates of economically recoverable oil from Alaska's Arctic National Wildlife Refuge range up to about 6 billion barrels.

That's one year of U.S. usage, not 30 to 50 years, as Bachmann claimed. And ANWR oil is likely to be natural-gas-rich, like the adjacent Point Thompson discovery.

That oil can't be produced because we have no pipeline for the gas.

Success with oil shale has been five years away for the past 40 years.

I didn't realize that shale oil isn't really oil.

Correct. It's highly toxic to extract. As the current technology stands, developing shale would make the Southern Rockies a de facto dead zone.

There's a lot of things not being realized by informed citizenry.

Keep EROEI in mind.

That's everything now.

Oil Shale was one of Jimmy Carter's hair brained ideas. He offered government incentives for getting oil from shale, which created a small, short boom in the Rockies that went bust when it turned out to be cost prohibitive.

Spoken like the perpetually grossly uninformed person that you are.

Shale oil development was a 1950's Cold War DoD project that was premised around the US having adequate supply of petroleum during a major war. Shale was developed off and on for the next 20 years and then was given a new kick in the pants by Carter in 1979.

Which is what I said -- a hair-brained idea from Carter who wasted tons of money subsidizing something that was not economically viable.

Carter created the Department of Energy to solve the country's energy problems.

30+ years later our energy problems are as bad or even worse than they were then.

The DOE is yet another bureaucracy that spends tons of money and gets little to no results.

This is very typical of almost all federal agencies and programs.

They should all be shut down - Energy, Agriculture, Commerce, Education, HUD, etc.

This would be a first in his time in the Whitehouse if it was true.

Its not.

It wasn't Carter's idea. Shale development had been going on for nearly 30 years. Carter promoted it as an alternative and he should have and it should be.

You're not much of a ***thinker*** inside the box and you're outright scary when you venture outside of it.

BTW, history should note that Nixon killed shale development claiming that the price was prohibitive...six months later the Arabs embargoed oil.
