I received an e-mail from a nice Republican, Christian lady the other day.

She thought I was being too tough on President Bush.

"I do believe you are a Christian," she said. "Check out Job sometime to see what the Lord has to say about 'friends' who judged Job! How easy for you to criticize. Where is your gratitude for the president's service?"

Job?

I've read Job. But I fail to see the parallel. Job was judged by his friends as sinful because of the afflictions he endured.

How is criticizing the most powerful man in the world akin to judging those who are suffering?

Nothing bad is happening to Bush. He hasn't lost his home and family. He doesn't have sores on his skin. He hasn't lost all his wealth.

On the contrary, what's happening is Bush is doing bad things to the country.

When people did bad things to the country in ancient Israel, the prophets called them on it – even kings. The prophet Nathan pointed the finger at David. Did he judge him? You bet he did.

Holding leaders accountable is a very biblical thing to do. Suggesting that all we should do is pray for them and hold them in high regard is anything but biblical – as the Founding Fathers clearly understood from poring over the Scriptures in English, Greek and Hebrew.

So that's how I responded to this nice Republican, Christian lady who questioned my faith and called me hateful and arrogant because I held Bush accountable to his oath of office.

She wrote back and explained: "These are difficult times – especially for Israel. I believe that the Lord sent us a leader at such a time as this who would stand up to the enemies of Israel – His beloved. Say what you want about GWB, he is firm in his convictions and support for Israel – much more than any other president we have had. Imagine, Joseph, what would have happened had John Kerry or Al Gore been in command!

"It doesn't seem to be 'good' for our country to have you 'pile on' with less than constructive criticism during these troubled and dangerous times," she added. "If you are comfortable answering to the Lord about your judgment, who am I to question you?"

A man who would stand up to the enemies of Israel?

Bush has been urging Israel to appease its enemies since Sept. 11, 2001.

What would have happened had John Kerry or Al Gore been in command?

It's a good question to ponder.

Certainly, the country would not have been better off. I take a backseat to no one in my contempt for these demagogues. Do I need to remind anyone that my company is still facing a $165 million defamation lawsuit because of our investigative reporting efforts into Gore's pattern of corruption in Tennessee? Some suggest that series denied Gore his home state and, thus, the presidency.

Despite the fact that Gore had been part of an administration that persecuted me for investigating it, I still could not bring myself to support George W. Bush for president and personally sat out the 2000 election.

Then there was Kerry. In 2004, I called him what he was and is – a traitor. It would have been a national disaster had he been elected.

But just because he wasn't elected doesn't mean we don't still have a national disaster on our hands.

The trouble is, despite having rejected both of these men – Gore and Kerry – we seem to have been saddled with too many of their policies anyway.

What would have happened had Kerry or Gore been elected? Let's think about it:

Would we have rounded up brave U.S. soldiers and locked them in the brig for carrying out their duty? Oh, I guess we did that under Bush, anyway ...

Would we have mischaracterized our enemy as a religion of peace? Oh, I guess we did that under Bush, anyway ...

Would we have forced Israel into appeasement of Hezbollah in Lebanon? Oh, I guess we did that under Bush, anyway ...

Would we have failed to find Osama bin Laden after five years? Oh, I guess we did that under Bush, anyway ...

Would we have given terrorist friends here in the U.S. tours of airports and other secure facilities to show how we really love them? Oh, I guess we did that under Bush, anyway ...

Would we have left the border open practically inviting a terrorist attack to rival Sept. 11? Oh, I guess we did that under Bush, anyway ... Clearly, I could go on and on with the list. But you get the point. We had no real choices in 2000 or 2004. I'm not going to pretend that Bush is something he's not – a good leader following the Constitution, defending the country and standing up for American principles.

I'm not going to drink that Kool-Aid. Not now. Not ever.
