Title: Trump under siege as he's told to quit the 'birther' talk, and Robert De Niro likens him to a car salesman

Donald Trump has been told to stop wasting time on the Obama 'birther' issue and 'focus on the main issues.'

At the same time he has been rounded upon by Hollywood legend Robert De Niro, who said his whole act was ' a hustle... like being a car salesman'.

The latest to speak out about Mr Trump's obsession with President Barack Obama's birthplace is New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg.

Appearing on Fox News Sunday, Mr Bloomberg said the real estate mogul, reality TV star and potential 2012 GOP presidential nominee was wrong to concentrate on Obama's birthplace.

He said: 'I think the Republicans are making a terrible mistake in making this a big issue.

Wild words: Robert De Niro, right, accused Donald Trump of making statements 'that he can't back up'

'We have immigration. We have the deficit. We have the economy. Those are the things that the public cares about.

'My girlfriend always says it's always about housing and jobs - my house, my job. That's what the public cares about. And if the Republican Party doesn't start addressing that they will lose and they deserve to."

Mr Bloomberg, a Democrat who first ran for mayor as a Republican but later declared himself an independent, said the birther bickering between Dems and the GOP is 'good theatre, but the country can no longer afford this.'

De Niro's comments were made during an interview with NBC News anchor Brian Williams at the Tribeca Film Festival on Saturday.

Endorsement: The Rev. Franklin Graham said Trump talks a lot of sense

De Niro said: 'I won't mention names, but there are certain people on the news in the last couple of weeks 52; what they're doing is crazy.

'They're making statements about people that they don't even back up. Go get the facts before you start saying things about people.'

Mr Williams asked: 'Any of those people have shows on my network on Sunday night?' a reference to Mr Trump's Celebrity Apprentice.

De Niro replied: 'Yes. "It's like a big hustle. It's like being a car salesman. Don't go out there and say things unless you can back them up. How dare you? It's awful. Just go out there and speak and say these terrible things? It's crazy.'

But Mr Trump did get a ringing endorsement from the Rev. Franklin Graham, president and CEO of the Billy Graham Evangelistic Association and the Christian relief organization Samaritan57;s Purse.

When asked on Sunday on ABC57;s This Week if he would choose Mr Trump as his candidate, Mr Graham said 'Sure, yeah. Sure.'

'The more you listen to him, the more you say to yourself, "You know, maybe the guy57;s right".'

While Mr Trump still has yet to declare whether he will run in 2012, his history of bankruptcies are sure to become an issue if he does throw his hat in the ring and could put a dent in his political aspirations.

He consistently says the nation needs a President who is a 'winner, not a loser,' but never mentions the recurring pattern of Trump companies filing for bankruptcy to dodge creditors and distance him from business failure.

When his Trump casinos filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy in 2009, Mr Trump claimed he had nothing to do with the gaming halls.

Beset by problems: Trump's casinos have figured heavily in his bankruptcy proceedings

He is, however, listed as an owner on the casino's licence.

In the last 20 years, Mr Trump's companies have sought protection from creditors to avoid financial collapse at least three times, the New York Daily News reports.

By 1990, Trump's multiple enterprises amassed debts of $4 billion. Trump won a loan restructuring deal in June 1991 after negotiations with creditors.

As part of that deal, Trump kept three casino properties in New Jersey, along with the Plaza Hotel in Manhattan and a then-undeveloped West Side tract.

He also was allowed to keep the commercial space at Trump Tower on Fifth Ave., and Trump Palace condo tower on Third Ave.

But he had to give up the Trump Shuttle airline, a 49 per cent stake in the Grand Hyatt Hotel, his 282ft yacht, a 27 per cent stake in the retail store Alexander's and commercial space at Trump Parc on Central Park South, records show.

Around the same time, he was renegotiating debt on the Taj Mahal and at least one other Atlantic City casino. The Taj entered bankruptcy in July 1991, and emerged a few months later with bondholders getting 50 per cent of the property.

By 2004, Mr Trump was staring at bankruptcy again. Trump Hotels & Casino Resorts, the company that ran his casinos declared Chapter 11.

The bankruptcy followed eight years of losses and $1.8 billion in debt.

In a deal with the firm's bondholders, Trump reduced his stake in the company from 56 to 27 per cent. The bondholders wound up with 65 per cent.

Then in February 2009, Trump Entertainment again sought bankruptcy protection. Days before the public filing, Trump quit as chairman of the board after the board rejected his offer to buy the company and take it private.

When the casinos emerged from bankruptcy, Trump's ownership share in the casinos dropped from 25% to 5% with an option to buy 5% more. In exchange, his name stays on the casinos.

Because he still has an ownership stake in the three casinos, his name remains on the license as a co-owner, according to the New Jersey Casino Control Commission.

I don't see this happening because I don't believe either party is what they appear to be. The same people run the two of them. This whole thing is scripted and there is no animosity between the two since they come from the same sewer. Trump's role is to divide the conservative vote and help ensure Barry Soetoro gets the rest of the time he needs to front the destruction of this country by the bankers who own the pols and mega-investors in this country. Caveat emptor.

We'll see. I think I'm about to learn everything (real and imaginary) there is to know about the husband of Ivana and Marla, the guy who uses bankruptcy as a business strategy, the TV reality star, the father of Ivanka, the Trump SoHo condo-hotel (talk about skeletons in his closet), the Taj Mahal, etc. It figures to be entertaining.

Trump isn't even close to being conservative.

Joy Behar, the worlds dumbest living woman and maybe even dumber than most dead women, told him on "The View" that he wasn't "really a Republican",but was "the kind of Republican I can vote for."

They are both life-long denizens of NYC,and she knows him well.

That should tell you everything you need to know about how conservative he is.

Think Ross Perot.

I will remain convinced to my dying day that Ross Perot was paid off to sabotage the Third Party movement in the US in order to assure a Dim win. What is known is that right after Bubba Bush was sworn in for his second term,Perot was invited to the WH to sign the contract that was awarded to his company (EDS) to digitize the Social Security records.

Now, I know I’m not going to change the minds of any of the True Believers…those who read all of Reverend Al’s sermons, and say things like, “You know, global warming can mean warmer OR colder, wetter OR drier, cloudier OR sunnier, windier OR calmer, …”. Can I get an ‘amen’??

Perot was long gone from EDS by that time. In fact, he was persona non grata around there after he founded his competing company, Perot Systems. Amusingly, EDS would not even mention him in their brochures describing the history of the company.

Guess what? Devout Christians are closer to Marx than they are Jefferson. Don't believe me? Just read the Bible.

Ok,it was Perot Systems or a subsidiary that got the contract, then. It's been a long time and EDS was the only company I remembered by name that he owned.

I agree and little snooping in Trump's business affairs may reveal the carrot he's being offered. Trump, as you say, is an elitist New Yorker and they see themselves as 'citizens of the world'.

The Donald -

Career

Starting with the renovation of the Commodore Hotel into the Grand Hyatt with the Pritzker family, he continued with Trump Tower in New York City and several other residential projects. Trump would later expand into the airline industry (buying the Eastern Shuttle routes),[35] and Atlantic City casino business, including buying the Taj Mahal Casino from the Crosby family, then taking it into bankruptcy. This expansion, both personal and business, led to mounting debt.[36] Much of the news about him in the early 1990s involved his much publicized financial problems, creditor-led bailout, extramarital affair with Marla Maples (whom he later married), and the resulting divorce from his first wife, Ivana Trump.

The late 1990s saw a resurgence in his financial situation and fame. In 2001, he completed Trump World Tower, a 72-story residential tower across from the United Nations Headquarters.[37] Also, he began construction on Trump Place, a multi-building development along the Hudson River. Trump owns commercial space in Trump International Hotel and Tower, a 44-story mixed-use (hotel and condominium) tower on Columbus Circle. Trump currently owns several million square feet of prime Manhattan real estate,[38] and remains a major figure in the field of real estate in the United States and a celebrity for his prominent media exposures.

Early success (1968 - 1989)

Trump began his career at his father's company,[39] the Trump Organization, and initially concentrated on his father's preferred field of middle-class rental housing in Brooklyn, Queens and Staten Island. One of Donald's first projects, while he was still in college, was the revitalization of the foreclosed Swifton Village apartment complex in Cincinnati, Ohio, which his father had purchased for 5.7 million dollars in 1962. Donald became intimately involved in the project, personally flying in for a few days at a time to carry out landscaping and other low-level tasks. After $500,000 investment, Donald successfully turned a 1200-unit complex with a 66% vacancy rate to 100% occupancy within two years. The Trump Organization sold Swifton Village for $6.75 million in 1972.[40]

In 1971 Trump moved his residence to Manhattan, where he became convinced of the economic opportunity in the city, specifically large building projects in Manhattan that would offer opportunities for earning high profits, utilizing attractive architectural design, and winning public recognition.[8] Trump began by landing the rights to develop the old Penn Central yards on the West Side, then 52; with the help of a 40-year tax abatement by the financially strained New York City government, which was eager to give tax concessions in exchange for investments at a time of financial crisis 52; turned the bankrupt Commodore Hotel into a new Grand Hyatt.[41]

He was also instrumental in steering the development of the Javits Convention Center on property he had an option on. The development saga of the Javits Convention Center brought Trump into contact with the New York City government when a project that he had estimated could have been completed by his company for $110 million ended up costing the city between $750 million and $1 billion. He offered to take over the project at cost, but the offer was not accepted.[42]

A similar opportunity would arise in the city's attempt to restore the Wollman Rink in Central Park, a project started in 1980 with an expected 2½-year construction schedule that was still, with $12 million spent, nowhere near completion in 1986. Trump offered to take over the job at no charge to the city, an offer that was initially rebuffed until it received much local media attention. Trump then was given the job which he completed in six months and with $750,000 of the $3 million budgeted for the project left over.[43]

Trump was also involved with the old USFL, a competitor to the NFL, as owner of the New Jersey Generals.[44] In addition, Trump at one time acted as a financial advisor for Mike Tyson,[45] and he hosted Tyson's fight against Michael Spinks in Atlantic City.[46]

Financial problems (1989 - 1997)

By 1989, the effects of the recession left Trump unable to meet loan payments. Trump financed the construction of his third casino, the $1 billion Taj Mahal, primarily with high-interest junk bonds. Although he shored up his businesses with additional loans and postponed interest payments, by 1991 increasing debt brought Trump to business bankruptcy[36] and the brink of personal bankruptcy. Banks and bond holders had lost hundreds of millions of dollars, but opted to restructure his debt to avoid the risk of losing more money in court. The Taj Mahal re-emerged from bankruptcy on October 5, 1991, with Trump ceding 50% ownership in the casino to the original bondholders in exchange for lowered interest rates on the debt and more time to pay it off.[47]

On November 2, 1992, the Trump Plaza Hotel was forced to file a prepackaged Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection plan after being unable to make its debt payments. Under the plan, Trump agreed to give up a 49% stake in the luxury hotel to Citibank and five other lenders. In return Trump would receive more favorable terms on the remaining $550+ million owed to the lenders and retain his position as chief executive, though he would not be paid and would not have a role in day-to-day operations.[48]

By 1994, Trump had eliminated a large portion of his $900 million personal debt[49] and reduced significantly his nearly $3.5 billion in business debt. While he was forced to relinquish the Trump Shuttle (which he had bought in 1989), he managed to retain Trump Tower in New York City and control of his three casinos in Atlantic City. Chase Manhattan Bank, which lent Trump the money to buy the West Side yards, his biggest Manhattan parcel, forced the sale of a parcel to Asian developers. According to former members of the Trump Organization, Trump did not retain any ownership of the site's real estate - the owners merely promised to give him about 30 percent of the profits once the site was completely developed or sold. Until that time, the owners wanted to keep Trump on to do what he did best: build things. They gave him a modest construction fee and a management fee to oversee the development. The new owners also allowed him to put his name on the buildings that eventually rose on the yards because his well-known moniker allowed them to charge a premium for their condos.[50]

Trump was elected to the Gaming Hall of Fame in 1995.[51]

In 1995, he combined his casino holdings into the publicly held Trump Hotels & Casino Resorts. Wall Street drove its stock above $35 in 1996, but by 1998 it had fallen into single digits as the company remained profitless and struggled to pay just the interest on its nearly $3 billion in debt. Under such financial pressure, the properties were unable to make the improvements necessary for keeping up with their flashier competitors.

If you're referring to Romney, Barbour, Pawlenty, Bachmann, Santorum, Huckabee, Huntsman, Gingrich, Bolton, Daniels or Cain, I'd probably go with Daniels or Cain as both have some executive experience and I don't know enough about either one to have crossed them off my list yet.

My criteria for an elected official starts with he/she not be a career politician, whelped by a career politician, or married/screwing a career politician. I prefer they not be lawyers. And I don't vote for the lesser of two evils so it is rare that I vote Republicrat.
