Title: Rand Paul questioned about possible presidential bid in Lexington

Republican U.S. Sen. Rand Paul was bombarded with questions about his possible bid for the presidency Monday as he brought his message of limited government and his new Tea Party book to Lexington.

Paul, a Bowling Green eye surgeon who won his maiden political race last year with strong support from the Tea Party movement, told a crowd of nearly 400 at a Commerce Lexington luncheon that the nation's main problem is its debt and that government is filled with "busybodies" run amok with regulations.

On WVLK-AM 590's Sue Wylie show earlier in the day and after his 18-minute Commerce Lexington speech, Paul was peppered with questions about his possible run for president next year.

On the radio show, Paul joked that he was rooming in Washington with his father, U.S. Rep. Ron Paul, R-Texas, who is considering the race, and that he didn't want to upset his landlord.

The senator told reporters at the Lexington Center that his father, who ran unsuccessfully for president in 2008, is making trips to Iowa and New Hampshire, key presidential primary states, and has filled out the paperwork for a presidential exploratory committee.

"We'll see," Paul said. "I think we'll know something in the next month or so what his decision is. I think he may be headed in that direction. I don't know."

Asked whether he will run for president if his father doesn't, Paul said, "Let's just wait and see what his decision is."

During his speech, Paul sounded like a candidate focused on reducing the size of government.

Paul took aim at the nation's debt of $14.2 trillion, saying the United States will spend more money this year than it did last. He said he did not know whether he will try to filibuster an attempt to the nation's debt ceiling.

Asked about a possible filibuster Sunday on CNN, Paul said the only way he would definitely vote to raise the debt ceiling is if Congress approves a balanced-budget amendment to the U.S. Constitution.

"I can tell you that the people of Kentucky elected me to shake things up. They didn't elect me to raise the debt ceiling," Paul said on CNN.

On Monday, he said recent cuts by Congress to prevent a government shutdown did not amount to $38 billion, as had been promised. He cited a Congressional Budget Office report that says the cuts will reduce federal spending by just $352 million.

Real cuts in government are necessary, the senator said. "The problem is, every constituency comes to me in Washington and says they need more money."

Even Lexington Mayor Jim Gray has had to make cuts, Paul said. "I told him at lunch he doesn't have a printing press (to print money)."

Paul said it will "not be fun" to take such steps as raising the age to receive Social Security, but such a move is needed for two reasons.

"We're living longer, and people had a whole lot of babies after World War II and they are getting ready to retire," Paul said. "I'm not responsible for either one of those things."

He also railed against excessive government regulations, saying they cost the economy $1.5 trillion.

For example, Paul said, the Environmental Protection Agency applies the same rules on oil spills in large bodies of waters to dairies because milk has a type of oil in it.

There also is the "Fugitive Dust Rule," Paul said, which initially regulated dust created by crushing coal but now applies to farms. He noted that a 144-page federal safety manual about climbing ladders includes the rule, "Make sure you face the ladder."

Paul said he plans to introduce legislation called "Regulatory Freedom Act" to curb government regulations.

During a question-and-answer session after his speech, Paul was asked how he reconciles making cuts that hurt people and being compassionate.

Paul said he thinks that everyone should be "his brother's keeper" and that capitalism is a humane system.

But government is too inefficient, Paul said.

"If you had $100, who would you rather give it to the Salvation Army or the government?" he asked. "I think the Salvation Army would make better use of your $100 than the federal government."

Paul signed copies of his new book, The Tea Party Goes to Washington, throughout the day and was scheduled for a signing Monday evening at Lexington's Joseph-Beth Booksellers.

Is there anything he said that you disagree with?

Do you know of any lies that he has ever told?

Truthfully, no. I never claimed that I thought he lied. I never said I disagree with him.

I said that I don't like anyone who has been associated with Ron Paul, because that guy (Ron Paul) freaks me out. That is my honest feeling about it.

Why are you afraid of Ron Paul.

What of his positions do you disagree with.

I already told you! Ron Paul freaks me out! He really freaks me out.. It may or may not be fair to judge Rand by Ron, but hey I am human. I am being honest.

I am leary of anything to do with Ron Paul.

I think he freaks out most of congress, the Republican party and Ben Bernanke too.

Hope he keeps it up!

Do you think Ron Paul will run?

Do you think they are strategizing together on who would be the most likely to win.

I like them both. But I think Rand Paul would have a better chance in the primaries and the general election.

He's the Hoss to bet on....if he gets an honest chance to speak. The REpub Prims will try to keep him out...just like they did his dad. Hannity is a phony SOB and if fox wins the broad cast time hannity will try to keep him out also.

If he can talk,,he will win some enthusiasum. Both are hound dogs....they stay on the trail and will die before they change against the constitution. Right Now Today we need both of these men to help us.America needs them but they don't know it. They can not do this by themselves. i'd like people to get behind them. I see no one w/a concrete ambition but these two. I think Ron will stay pounding the feds...where he should be,...Rand will run the race.

That's entirely possible. Obviously they won't both run at the same time so if Ron runs, Rand definitely won't. That Rand holds a senate seat compared to Ron's house seat is also favorable for Rand, as there are fewer Senators than Congressmen.

I like them both. But I think Rand Paul would have a better chance in the primaries and the general election.

Before Rand got into office, it seems he was just a shadow of Ron in his ideals, as he seemed to be pro-Israel and going along with all the WoT stuff, but since getting in, it's been a very good surprise for me. Ron is up in years which is probably the biggest strike against him. But as it stands now, I'd be real happy with Rand running.

Rand seems to me like the real deal. I think he is telling the truth when he speaks. Ron too.

I've noticed a lot of peole who hate Ron Pauls guts stick up and defend, and praise Rand. Pinguinite mentioned the age factor. I think that would be an issue with many issues.

I expect them to play their cards tight to the chest.

That sounds like the wise thing to do. If they show all their cards they have exposed the plans and others do not need to know.

No, I don't think he has had enough national exposer to win over Palin, it's just going to split the votes. But I honestly believe if he keeps going he could take it 1216, or maybe if Palin would stop and think, he could be the perfect VP running mate. jmho~

No, I don't think he has had enough national exposer to win over Palin, it's just going to split the votes.

Split the votes.... the old "wasted vote" syndrome.

Yes, we do have about the worst election system around that discourages people from actually voting for whom they prefer. That's one of the reasons we're in this mess with such a dysfunctional system of government.

I'm not the least bit confident that Palin would be significantly different that Obama. The USA is headed for a serious train wreck and it will take someone as "drastic" as Ron Paul to put the brakes on before the wreck happens. Not that it would stop the wreck, but at least we won't be going full steam into it which will otherwise be the case. Any standard R or D president simply does not understand that we're broke and it's time to end foreign wars, end foreign aid, shut down fed gov programs, and bring the troops home en masse.

I am not confident that Palin would do that.

My 2c.

As for Ron being a VP to Palin, I suspect he would set conditions on Palin which Palin would have to refuse. RP will in no way echo any of Palin's policies if he thinks they are unconstitutional. Palin would not/could not have any VP like that.

Ron, however could have Rand as his running mate.

That would be interesting. Do you think Ron would have the courage to name his son his vp. Not saying Ron isn't courageous but it would be unprecedented.

If it did happen we could have 16 years to correct some serious problems.

I still think Rand is the more viable candidate.

For Ron, it wouldn't be courage. He would do it if it were the right thing to do. Nothing courageous about that.

If Ron runs and does not choose Rand, then who would he pick? Huckabee? McCain? Any mainstream R candidate simply wouldn't make sense. He'd have to, and would, pick someone who shares his values. I'd say picking Rand would be the logical choice.

Maybe there's some other Libertarian or Constitutional based candidate that he could choose, like one of the 3rd party pres candidates from 2008, but if so, I think it would come down to it being Rand OR one of them.

HEY NEIL!

Can you positively identify me or anyone else harming LP or LF? You know, YOU have responsibility about all this stuff. It is popularly suggested that your software is up for grabs by the latest hacker... buckeroo.

I don't have access to LP's server so I can't tell anything about that. Though it would be a lot of work, info passed to the server such as the originating IP address could be forged, so no "identification" can be 100% certain. And of course even if I know your IP and computer OS, I don't know anything about you including your true name, so no, I cannot positively identify you or anyone else from your postings.

If there is any security hole in my software, I'll deal with it when there's reasonable proof of it. So far there is none that I know of, and I won't go on wild goose chases. I'm not being paid to maintain the software so my responsibility is quite limited.

Security can be increased by having the site be encrypted (with https access) which is something I suggest all sites should have. Sites that are not encrypted do have a limited security hole with "wiretapping", limited as it still requires privileged access to the data going between server and client, (something that interested parties are unlikely to have) but that's not the fault of my software.

The software does maintain it's own set of logs, and the apache web-serving software has a separate set of log files. In some respects, apache has better log files and in other respects, my software does.

For example, my software links IP addresses and info called the "User Agent" to specific posts, while Apache does not. Apache logs each an every access to the site such as the sign in page, while my software does not.
