Title: Drama erupts on House floor as conservative budget goes down

House lawmakers defeated a proposal by conservative Republicans to make deeper cuts to spending and tax rates than those proposed in the Republican budget, but only after last-minute maneuvering by Democrats on the House floor.

In a chaotic scene filled with shouting more typical of that which takes place in the British Parliament, the Republican Study Committee's (RSC) alternative to Rep. Paul Ryan's (R-Wis.) 2012 budget went down in a 119-136 vote.

It was gaveled shut only after Democratic leaders started pushing members to switch their "no" votes to "present," in order to force a face-off between conservatives and the Republican leadership. A total of 176 lawmakers voted "present."

House Minority Whip Steny Hoyer (D-Md.) said on Twitter:

Dems voting present on RSC budget to highlight GOP divisions, plans to end Medicare - which bdgt does GOP support? Ryan or Ryan on steroids?

Hoyer and Ryan could both be observed yelling on the House floor, with Hoyer shouting to his members to vote present and Ryan shouting for the vote to be gaveled closed.

Members of the Republican leadership flipped their votes in the closing moments of the proposal to help fell the proposal. Rep. Cathy McMorris Rodgers (R-Wash.) switched her vote from yes to no at the last minute, as did Rep. David Dreier (R-Calif.), the chairman of the House Rules Committee.

There was last-minute drama in the vote over the conservative proposal, as a number of liberal Democrats flipped their votes from "no" to "present." Lawmakers loudly protested as Republicans tried to gavel the vote shut before more votes could be switched.

Rep. DeFazio: Obama shouldn't give Mexican trucks full access to U.S. roads
By Keith Laing

The Obama administration should not give Mexican trucks full access to U.S. highways under NAFTA, a liberal Democrat said Friday.

In a letter to the agency administering a program that would allow Mexican trucks into the U.S., Rep. Peter DeFazio (D-Ore.) said the administration was pushing the “full liberalization of cross-border trucking” with its proposed pilot program under the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA).

Hey, My Dem Congressman Peter Defazio is butting heads with President Obama on NAFTA and his desire to see Mexican trucks on U.S. highways before safety and job security issues are dealt with.

So the Democrats are not exactly a monolith that move in a robotic fashion to the same drummer. ;-)

I must admit though, the tactic surprised me. It seems so..... Republican in it's sneakiness.

I was down at the Tea Party Rally today at the former Nixon Federal Building now called, "The Old Federal Building" here in Eugene chewing the fat on politics and many were livid at how the Republican leadership handled it.

And of course they had many foul comments on Dems too. I was pleased too to note that when I used my test the waters like which boiled down to, "Ron Paul good/Michele Bachman bad," most there agreed with me. Some very enthusiastically.

It is going to be a very interesting election year in 2012.

If it's any consolation, my brother in law, a Tea Partier, believes that the GOP sold out today.

I guess Republicans will have to rethink counting on Democrats doing their dirty work for them.

Hopefully, they will have to re-think all their tragedies as a born again as a minority party in the House as well as the Senate this next election.

I was down at the Tea Party rally at the Old Federal Building in Eugene and in chewing the fat with them, I found many also caught this action and now think their party will only work either separately from them, or preferably if the Republican surrender and become more like them.

They were not happy with whether Miss Repub Piggie, fascist Michele Bachmann or the Tundra Trash left over from McNasty's gambit for a game changing VP candidate.

The Republicans operate with the fallacies these people will be their patsies and cool fools going along with the make the rich richer plan, and that the Democrats are fools and dumb unto extinction.

I find Constitutionalists far more civil and knowledgeable than the rank and file perennial grass root election volunteer workforce people the Republicans count on to do the grass roots work here in Lane County Oregon.

But that has never, ever been a bar too hard to surpass.

I have yet to have a face to face with a Tea Partier that made any sense. And that includes my brother in law whom I see 3-4 times a week.

Yeah, I didn't leave with the sense we would soon see things the same way, but it was nice to talk to people who get out for political reasons to hear and see who the are free of the media filter.

We didn't agree, but they were decent folks and I didn't appreciate the VA person whom I visited in that building polled me as to how I felt about the Tea Party event. When I asked as to why she wanted to know this was told the Federal Security likes to know how visitors feel to aid in a threat assessment of groups like this using Federal property for political reasons.

That creeped me out, something that hearing different takes on issues and politics form Tea Party people didn't do to me at all.
