It has been 150 years since the Civil War began with the first shots at Fort Sumter on April 12, 1861, and in some respects views of the Confederacy and the role that slavery played in the events of 1861 still divide the public, according to a new national poll.

In the CNN/Opinion Research Corporation Poll released Tuesday, roughly one in four Americans said they sympathize more with the Confederacy than the Union, a figure that rises to nearly four in ten among white Southerners.

When asked the reason behind the Civil War, whether it was fought over slavery or states' rights, 52 percent of all Americans said the leaders of the Confederacy seceded to keep slavery legal in their state, but a sizeable 42 percent minority said slavery was not the main reason why those states seceded.

"The results of that question show that there are still racial, political and geographic divisions over the Civil War that still exist a century and a half later," CNN Polling Director Holland Keating said.

When broken down by political party, most Democrats said southern states seceded over slavery, independents were split and most Republicans said slavery was not the main reason that Confederate states left the Union.

Republicans were also most likely to say they admired the leaders of the southern states during the Civil War, with eight in 10 Republicans expressing admiration for the leaders in the South, virtually identical to the 79 percent of Republicans who admired the northern leaders during the Civil War.

The survey polled 824 adults via telephone between April 9 and April 10. The poll had a sampling error of plus or minus 3.5 percentage points. (1 image)

Who cares? It's like picking at scabs.

Who cares?

I went to grades 1-3 in Fl, 4-8 in Tn and 9-12 in NJ. They people I attended school with all pretty much cared. But then, they were Americans who knew and appreciated their history.

We know the history. The Union won the Confederacy lost. The Union was preserved and some people are still pissed 150 years later.

I've never heard the storied history of the War between the States nor the effects of that war still being felt today dismissed so simplistically.

That's because there are too many people who like to pick at scabs. Exactly what effects of the Civil War do you feel?

No.

It's because we had FAMILY who actually fought that WAR.

It's OUR history.

WE remember it and them.

So did I. We still have correspondence, pay records and a sword that belonged to my great grandfather.

So .............

Current interest in the Civil WAR/WAR between the states for most Americans is hardly "picking scabs" is it?

Not to mention that certain issues have never been settled, such as the concept of an all powerful federal national gooberment being the correct direction for the USA.

In FACT we are dealing with THAT right now with the feral gooberment and the messiah "king" obammy et. al, aren't we?

The Civil War is over. We are a Union of 50 states and it is time we start acting like it. Regional bickering and bitching gets us nowhere.

Actually the WAR between the states and the feral gooberment is ongoing.

It's just a political/cultural WAR.

Before the Civil WAR/WAR between the states it was "THESE" United States of America, after it was "THE" United States of America.

ALL of human history, and ALL human cultures that have ever existed, have shown that power always tends to aggregate and centralize. This is not speculation it is proven historical fact.

This ongoing never ending WAR is about the individual's natural God given rights against the intrusive power of gooberment, and if you haven't noticed the individual is taking a real beating.

I'm talking worldwide not "just" here in THE USA.

Regional "bickering" is the very bones of LIBERTY and strong LOCAL power.

There is NO "bickering" in Communist China.

The feral gooberment is a creature of the individual STATES creation. The STATES do not exist as a mere regional fantasy to facilitate the feral gooberment's gooberment of the American people.

The several STATES do not exist to serve the feral gooberment.

The currently feral gooberment exists ONLY to serve the several states will and interests.

FTW

You make an interesting point. Let me ponder that before I take a shot...[:~(]
