US deficit up 15.7% in first half of fiscal 2011

(AFP) – 2 hours ago

WASHINGTON — The US budget deficit shot up 15.7 percent in the first six months of fiscal 2011, the Treasury Department said Wednesday as political knives were being sharpened for a new budget battle.

The Treasury reported a deficit of $829 billion for the October-March period, compared with $717 billion a year earlier, as revenue rose a sluggish 6.9 percent as the economic recovery slowly gained pace.

The Treasury argued that the pace of increase in the deficit was deceptive because of large one-off reductions in expenditures made during the first half of fiscal 2010, compared with previous and subsequent periods.

Those included a $115 billion reduction in funds spent on the Troubled Asset Relief Program (TARP) -- the financial institution bailout program -- in March 2010.

But 2011 so far has also seen significant increases in spending on defense, Social Security, health and debt service, while receipts have not grown as fast.

"The jump in outlays mostly owed to a smaller estimated reduction in TARP outlays this year versus 2010," said Theresa Chen at Barclays Capital Research.

However, she said, the trend shows that taxable income is rising at a 6.9 percent annual pace, and individual incomes taxes are up 20.6 percent, "consistent with general economic improvement."

The figures came amid a sharp, politically partisan battle in Washington over cutting spending and raising taxes, with President Barack Obama preparing Wednesday to release his plan for reducing the long-term deficit.

He also faces a looming battle over increasing the country's official debt ceiling, so that the government can continue to borrow to finance the deficit.

The dems inherited created every prpblem that the US has. The GOP often hasn't done enough to fight them.

Correct answer, you win a giant cookie of your choice......

So did they create or inherit? Since you are giving out the cookies maybe you can translate.

I agree with the GOP part though because they created the problems so why would they fight them?

The dems created the entitlements and the entitlement mentality. Get rid of them and no more debt.

What do you propose we do with the sick, poor and elderly?

Why is it that other nations take care of them but the Greatest Nation in the History of the World cannot?

Democrats are evil, they are so evil they even murder little innocent babies. In Obamas case even after being born.

The only diff is they paid corps and businesses directly to do the killing. The procedure you describe has been in effect for close to 20 years with nary a GOP pres/congress stopping it.

Tell me, did Terri Schiavo not happen under orders from a GOP judge, in a GOP governored state, under a GOP both house congress, under a GOP pres? I rest my case.

Because there is no constitutional authority for government to take from some to give to others. In other words, we were not designed to be socialist.

That's one aspect that made America different that the rest of the world.

We have churches, families and charities to care for the sick, poor and elderly.

Because there is no constitutional authority for government to take from some to give to others.

There is constitutional authority to maintain an orderly society. In fact, the organizing principle of any government, after war making powers, is exactly that...maintain order.

The burden on the private health care system alone violates that principle.

Why is it that other nations take care of them but the Greatest Nation in the History of the World cannot?

"GOVERNMENT RULES AND REGULATIONS" have created that mess you describe.....

Socialized medicine in other countries does not do a good job of taking care of the sick/elderly. If they determine that treating you is a waste of money you get no treatment, at least here you have "still" the option to seek and get treatment..... pay for it out of your own pocket if you have to but still available.... but not for much longer if ObozoCare gets fully implemented....

If you want an example I will show you.... I'm retired military on the government sponsored insurance plan called Tricare. I recently had an ear infection and called the Base Hospital to get an appointment for treatment. I was told over the phone it would be "9" days before I could be seen... yea right.. I guess maybe me possibly loosing my hearing in that ear wasn't very important to them. So I went to the local emergency room and got seen in 2 hours, cost me a $20 copay but was well worth it...

One idea out there is to give "vouchers" to people to enable them to get private insurance that would be much cheaper for the taxpayer and more effective for the patients.... in essence do away with Medicare and Medicaid.. but as it stands right now that's not going to happen with the Dems in charge. They are totally against anything other than ObozoCare, it's their Holy Grail for getting control of you, take your freedoms away from you..... that make you happy?????

As far as the poor goes.... well "most" of them are that way because they want to be that way.... I know that sounds stupid but it's true in more ways than one.. Ignorance is probably the biggest reason for poverty, laziness is probably #2, single parentage is probably #3... All of those Welfare programs that are "SUPPOSED" to be helping these people are actually doing the opposite..... they aren't solving the problems, only exacerbating them..

That's a lie from every angle:

1) The Home Loan program under Clinton required a three year work history of provable income.

2) Those loans were at a fixed rate and required PMI.

3) They had nothing to do with the current financial mess.

4) The bank mortgages at the center of the current mess were mostly issued after Boy Blunder's HUD relaxed the standards in 2003.

But you know all of this, Padlock.

You're out of your mind.

What government rules and regulations keep a non insured person from getting the same treatment for major illnesses as an insured person?

Socialized medicine in other countries does not do a good job of taking care of the sick/elderly.

Once again you're out of your mind. The US lags HORRIBLY behind nations with single payer systems in health care delivery to almost all demographics.

One idea out there is to give "vouchers" to people to enable them to get private insurance that would be much cheaper for the taxpayer and more effective for the patients.... i

Here's a better idea...just build clinics, staff them and treat people when they need it? It works in Singapore, France, Italy, Germany, Japan, Israel, Belgium, Spain, Portugal, Iran, and is the model for Iraq and the list goes on.

Good little drone, believe them all you want....

I've been overseas and seen it first hand, I know better...... My second daughter was born in England and has dual citizenship, which means she is eligible for British healthcare. While I was gone on a TDY to Belgium she came down with "Pink Eye". My wife called the local doctor to get an appointment for her, the receptionist told her 2 weeks minimum!!!!!! One week to process the initial paperwork and another week for the appointment.... So my wife took the bus up to Lakenheath (40 miles away) where she was born and got her in the next day....

I suggest if you think socialized healthcare is so "Phucking" great you move to another country and experience it firsthand, before passing judgement on it....

In all seriousness, you are right - the House, Senate and Presidency all share responsibility for the deficit.

Thank you for some sense of honest analysis.

But I'm dealing with Badeye, who blamed the deficit of 2007-08 on House Democrats. Therefore, by that logic, House Republicans are responsible for the current deficit.

Well 65, Dems did control both Houses, did they not?

House Republicans are guilty of being bamboozled into financing two fake wars and mostly responsible for the deficits we're incurred thus far.

OTOH, why hasn't 0bama pulled out of Iraq like he promised? And why aren't Dems pressuring him about it? Moreover, why are the Dems supporting the Nobel Peace Prize winning warmonger for his foray into Libya?

Our withdrawal from Iraq is still scheduled for completion by the date negotiated by the Bush administration. Obama never promised an immediate pullout.

And many Democrats have been outspoken in their criticism of Obama for his actions in Libya.

Since January 3, 2011, Republicans have controlled the power of the purse.

Belgium has walk in clinics throughout the nation and, if a clinic is not open, there are a number of "emergency centers" that will take walk-ins. Also, Belgium, France, Italy and Germany will allow pharmacies to dispense medicine for common affliction, conditions such as pink eye would probably qualify.

So, either you were under informed while in Belgium or you tried the American route. You also perpetuate the myth that doctors here have tons of openings for people like you who need to see a doctor. They don't.

These are some examples of state and federal government regulations and rulings that drive up healthcare costs..... it's not all inclusive cause I just don't know them all....

FDA regulation of existing and new drugs coming to the marketplace drives up prescription costs by 15-20%......

Insurance policies "mandated" to cover things such as plastic surgery, breast enhancement, abortions, accupuncture, massage therapy, podiatry and osteopathy......

Guaranteed issue” allows people to wait till they are sick and then buy insurance; “community rating” prevents insurers from charging different prices to people of different ages and health status. These may sound like compassionate ideas, until you realize they make insurance so expensive that millions of people are exposed to financial ruin because they aren’t allowed to buy basic policies focused on catastrophic costs. (Sound familiar?? ObozoCare)!!

FDA regulation of existing and new drugs coming to the marketplace drives up prescription costs by 15-20%......

Challenge.

Insurance policies "mandated" to cover things such as plastic surgery, breast enhancement, abortions, accupuncture, massage therapy, podiatry and osteopathy......

Every thing you listed, with the exception of podiatry, is optional coverage that can be negotiated to be provided by a policy. Not one of those is "mandated". BUt why should podiatry be excluded? When I broke my ankle, the ortho I saw is also a podiatrist.

Bullshit. Increasing the number of insured increases the number of HEALTHY people who are purchasing a product that they will not use. They far outnumber the number of people who will get sick.

What you just posted absolutely defies logic.

There is a reason why the health insurance industry isn't fighting all that hard to have HRC repealed. And, btw, the US is probably the only industrialized nation that does not guarantee catastrophic illness coverage for its citizens.

They aren't just as bad. There are elements of it that are just as bad. But there are also good Republicans. There are few to zero good democrats. I mean who wants to be a member of a party that funding planned parenthood abortions is a top priority?

I think you know that statement is false. No federal money given to Planned Parenthood is used to fund abortions, so how can that be a top priority.

"all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God"

Kyl said in a speech in opposition to federal funding for Planned Parenthood that "well over 90 percent" of what the organization does is abortion-related.

After it was pointed out that it's actually 3 percent, a Kyl spokesman said the comment "was not intended to be a factual statement."

What? So what was it intended to be? A joke? A lie?
