Title: Michelle Obama's America: Chicago School Bans Bag Lunches to Protect Kids from Themselves

The Chicago Tribune reported Monday that one Chicago public school -- the Little Village Academy -- has banned bag lunches...to protect the kids from their own "unhealthful" food choices:

Principal Elsa Carmona said her intention is to protect students from their own unhealthful food choices.

"Nutrition wise, it is better for the children to eat at the school," Carmona said. "It's about the nutrition and the excellent quality food that they are able to serve (in the lunchroom). It's milk versus a Coke. But with allergies and any medical issue, of course, we would make an exception."

Carmona said she created the policy six years ago after watching students bring "bottles of soda and flaming hot chips" on field trips for their lunch. Although she would not name any other schools that employ such practices, she said it was fairly common.

A Chicago Public Schools spokeswoman said she could not say how many schools prohibit packed lunches and that decision is left to the judgment of the principals.

"While there is no formal policy, principals use common sense judgment based on their individual school environments," Monique Bond wrote in an email. "In this case, this principal is encouraging the healthier choices and attempting to make an impact that extends beyond the classroom."

But reporters Monica Eng and Joel Hood suggest there are other reasons than a nutrition crusade: "Any school that bans homemade lunches also puts more money in the pockets of the district's food provider, Chartwells-Thompson. The federal government pays the district for each free or reduced-price lunch taken, and the caterer receives a set fee from the district per lunch." But if they're really concerned about a learning environment, what if the kids don't eat?

At Little Village, most students must take the meals served in the cafeteria or go hungry or both. During a recent visit to the school, dozens of students took the lunch but threw most of it in the garbage uneaten. Though CPS has improved the nutritional quality of its meals this year, it also has seen a drop-off in meal participation among students, many of whom say the food tastes bad.

"Some of the kids don't like the food they give at our school for lunch or breakfast," said Little Village parent Erica Martinez. "So it would be a good idea if they could bring their lunch so they could at least eat something."

"(My grandson) is really picky about what he eats," said Anna Torrez, who was picking up the boy from school. "I think they should be able to bring their lunch. Other schools let them. But at this school, they don't."

But parent Miguel Medina said he thinks the "no home lunch policy" is a good one. "The school food is very healthy," he said, "and when they bring the food from home, there is no control over the food."

At Claremont Academy Elementary School on the South Side, officials allow packed lunches but confiscate any snacks loaded with sugar or salt. (They often are returned after school.) Principal Rebecca Stinson said that though students may not like it, she has yet to hear a parent complain.

"The kids may have money or earn money and (buy junk food) without their parents' knowledge," Stinson said, adding that most parents expect that the school will look out for their children.

On the local news out of Chicago tonight I saw a clip where the kids are dumping the lunch and sneaking in various goodies. One parent said they couldn't afford the $2.25 vs. PB&J. Out schools doing what we can't do?

You know what? I used to be a proud Democrat. A Harry Truman, Scoop Jackson kind of guy who liked the way Democrats ran cities but was always nervous about the state jobs. Then along came Frank Church & McGovern followed by Carter and I just started to lose my enthusiasm.

I still vote in Democratic primaries because I am still hopeful that some sanity will return but I know it is too late. The thieves are all in bed and they just don't give a crap.

The hell with shutting down government. Just don't pay them make up pay when they come back to work at half rations.

I think he locked the thread because he was tired of seeing all this go on so long ...
a pointless undertaking, many would say.

But you and your ilk will just not leave things alone ... scab picker.

Are you (Stone) trying to cover for yukon?

Now that was a stupid question ... really stupid!

Fred, stop hijacking threads for your personal vendetta ... stop now!

Hawk ... This is what I was talking about.

I don't know if banning bag lunches is the answer but the trend seems to be more and more obese children and that probably translates to more obese adults.

Chicago School Bans Bag Lunches ...

Without question, this is a gross fundamental infringement on parental rights and responsibility!

The only reason why YOU or "yukon" are here is because of the CT about "yukon's" claims. You add nothing; you do nothing; you are an illiterate retired socialist begging for bucks sucking the teat.... not that yukkie does that ... he likes dicks.

You are insane, punk irrespective of the claims you say about your background. You are a non-professional.

There are of course genetic conditions which predispose and even cause children and adolescents to become overweight … or even obese. However, that usually is not the primary reason for weight problems. While only a small percentage of childhood obesity is associated with a hormonal or genetic defect … it remains that everyone (children and adults) mostly gain weight when energy food input exceeds their exercise energy output.

Without question, this is a gross fundamental infringement on parental rights and responsibility!

I used to trade home made bread & roast beef sandwiches for baker's bread and baloney 'cause I didn't get it at home...but you know what? We raised our own beef and my mother made the bread and we were just as poor as everyone else in those days...we ate less and bought less because there was no money. Today, that doesn't seem to matter so much. I still like bread and milk Sunday nights and maybe a root beer float on Saturday...

You know that video of 'leave brittany alone'....someone should make that into 'leave US alone

we ate less and bought less because there was no money.

We ate 3 "meals" a day. There wasn't anything to snack on. No package cookies or pastries. No frozen foods. There were no fast food restaurants. Treats were popcorn, eggnog and apple cider. You hardly ever saw fat people or even overweight people. We walked and rode bikes everywhere unless we were going to the next town and it was raining or snowing.

Don't you just hate all those prepackaged, value added chemical mixtures, that companies try to pass off as "food"? Melamine anyone?
