Liberals proved spectacularly wrong about traffic deaths

by Russ Vaughn

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has just issued a report showing that traffic deaths in America were last year at their lowest level since 1949. This despite the fact that the population has more than doubled from 153 million in 1950 to 308 million in 2010. Certainly there are many reasons for the drop in fatalities, and intensive campaigns against drunk driving has accounted for much of this good news. The NHTSA gives its self some pats on the back for initiating and supporting safety programs, some of which I've never seen mention of.

What goes unsaid in all of this, however, is the glaring contradiction by city-dwelling, unicorn-riding liberals that higher speed limits would inevitably lead to more highway traffic deaths. Recall that we had a congressionally-imposed National Maximum Speed Law from 1974 until 1995 which originally imposed a 55 mph highway speed limit across the country, even on interstate roadways until it was repealed by a Republican congress. Do you recall all the liberal doomsayers predicting the horrible increase in highway traffic deaths that would result?

In the past three days I drove more than 750 miles through eastern New Mexico and West Texas. Texas wisely increased its speed limits after the repeal and now has 75 mph limits on many rural two-lane highways in the wide, sparsely-inhabited spaces of West Texas and limits of 80 mph on interstate highways in that wide region. And in the past few days has come news that the Texas legislature is contemplating elimination of reduced nighttime speed limits and the establishment of a 75 mph limit on all two-lane farm and ranch roads.

Unfortunately, when one crosses the Texas-New Mexico border into the latter, they can expect to encounter the beneficent tyranny of a Democrat-controlled nanny state where speed limits as low as 55 mph may be imposed inexplicably on stretches of little-used highways crossing vast expanses of unpopulated desert. For that we can thank Democrat Bill Richardson, who spent eight years trying to remake New Mexico into New Jersey, and his lapdog Democrat legislature.

But the million-dollar question arising from the fed's latest revelation about traffic deaths is what happened to that huge increase in such deaths that liberals were sure would follow increased speed limits? The accuracy of these moonbats in predicting disasters resulting from common-sense legislating by conservative Republican governments is exemplified by this NHTSA report. Consider as well as their equally bogus predictions of massive increases in gun-related deaths associated with expanded concealed-carry legislation. These Chicken-Little Libs just love making themselves miserable with fears of impending disasters that never come to pass.

OK, you libs were wrong on speed limits, now let's talk about global warming...

And drilling in the Gulf...

And Wisconsin...

Prior to Gore inventing the internet (chuckle) Dems/Liberals could get away with this stuff, as it wouldn't be brought up by the media even with 20/20 hindsight.

I hear you knockin...go back where you been....

No.

I do recall the law and order types as well as the FOP warning of it, though.

The speed limit was lowered, btw, to conserve oil.

What a load of straw man arguments. The speed limit was passed by A Republican president to save fuel in response to the 1973 oil crisis. What teh fuck is wrong with you and who ever wrote this unsourced garbage?

In 1995 there was a repeal of the 55/mph federal speed limit.

So what the hell are you on about?

By the way, reducing the speed limit did save lives and did save fuel usage.

PS: Germany's autobahn and their unlimited speed limit only works there because the roads are built more robustly than American roads. The irony is to drive on roads without speed limit you need a strong federal authority and high taxes to maintain the roads.

The only conservatives that remain in America skew stupid.

Boofer must be mentally unbalanced. He is having these conversations in his head with imagined facts and then has the need to post them on blogs no one reads. I called him stupid but I am thinking he may be deranged.

The speed limit was passed by A Republican president to save fuel in response to the 1973 oil crisis.

Along with an almost Supermajority of Democrats in the Senate......

Also the concept of the speed limit saving "large amounts" of fuel was not proven to be true, it was MAYBE 1/2% at best...... (I've been driving back and forth to Texas for almost 30 years and the best speed versus MPG on my vehicles seems to be about 72 MPH)....

As far as the Safety aspect goes: In 1986, the highway death toll was roughly half that of 1966. The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, which normally favors increased restrictions on drivers, said that credit for this "mainly" goes to laws passed 8 years before the 55 mph speed limit went into effect".

The author of this article could have added more pertinent information but he didn't......

As to what I'm on about, not all decisions made and implemented are good ones...

So in the end the 55 mph speed limit was not passed by liberals. It was passed for national security reasons, it saved a little fuel (I thought Conservatives were all about thrift) and helped save lives along with new safety regulations the govt forced down the auto industry's throat.

What's the problem?

PS: Your blog entry is still fantasy since there was no left vs right fight on speed limits and in fact there is no longer a federal speed limit. So why did you think there was? Get out of state much?

I read an article about 3 or 4 weeks ago about just that left versus right on the Texas speed limits.... I came across this article today and found it "humorous", especially the last couple of sentences, so I posted it.....

The states run by the oil companies always hate speed limits.

Between the speed laws, and the red light camera- we have little chance of insurance premiums not going up. It is liberating to not worship money in situations that deal with driving.

The difference between the left and the right is simple: Left - Feels, Right- Thinks.

And then there are varying degrees of thinking and feeling. Liberals emote.

I believe in the case of speed limits, liberals are afraid of speed and so they want laws to limit how fast everyone else drives. That is how a liberal makes things equal, fair and safe. They slow everything down to their level. Speed limits is just ONE of those things. :)

Your own projections are an obvious problem upon some us more libertarian minded folks and is conclusive proof of and about your own failed neo-con war mantra. More than that you categorically PROVE that you can't hold a discussion without resorting to juvenile one-liners which further characterizes you within the same realm: over-stated with a "hummer."

Highway engineering has a lot to do with the speed limits too. The higher the speed the more engineering required and the higher the price to build it. Higher speeds for Semis wears out highways faster too.
