MOBILE AMERICA

By Neal Boortz @ March 29, 2011 8:34 AM Permalink

As we learn more and more about our current population, thanks to the Census Bureau, we are also getting a glimpse into the American psyche - Americans are driven to seek places where there are less taxes, less government spending and less union influence. Michael Barone has a few highlights for us.

•The lesson is that high taxes and strong public employee unions tend to stifle growth and produce a two-tier society like coastal California's.

•The eight states with no state income tax grew 18 percent in the last decade. The other states (including the District of Columbia) grew just 8 percent.

•The 22 states with right-to-work laws grew 15 percent in the last decade. The other states grew just 6 percent.

•The 16 states where collective bargaining with public employees is not required grew 15 percent in the last decade. The other states grew 7 percent.

•The most rapid growth in 2000-10, 21 percent, was in the Rocky Mountain states and in Texas. The Rocky Mountain states tend to have low taxes, weak unions and light regulation. Texas has no state income tax, no public employee union bargaining and light regulation. The fact is that many of these states believe that the more taxes you impose, particularly on the rich, the more money they will get in order to fund their bigger-government scheme and wealth distribution plans. But that is entirely not the case. Fostering a friendly economic climate with low taxes, low spending and right-to-work are ultimately what drives people to a state, thereby increasing potential tax revenue and economic gain. Meanwhile, as these high-tax, high-spending states continue to lose revenue, they continue to raise taxes. In California, for example, "Nearly half of California's income taxes before the recession came from the top 1% of earners: households that took in more than $490,000 a year." But it's state saw less growth compared to lower tax states, and it is also in a gigantic financial hole .. considering that the top 1% of earners are also the most volatile income group to rely upon. The Wall Street Journal also points out, "New York, New Jersey, Connecticut and Illinois--states that are the most heavily reliant on the taxes of the wealthy--are now among those with the biggest budget holes."

It's not rocket science, unless you are a Liberal who cannot understand why people would want less government in their lives.

I live in one of those states.

I'm pretty sure that I live in the only state that doesn't have an income tax but does have forced unionization.

It's a weird combination. The small union sector isn't doing well. Everyone else is doing okay.

We have suffered, but not as much as others.

With 33 million+ people in my state, I'd like less population growth myself.

I lived in Texas for 11 years and their population is growing by leaps and bounds, especially in the Dallas/Fort Worth area....... Almost 1 million new people in the last 10 years...... If it weren't for family matters I would still be there enjoying the fishing and the weather.....

I lived in Texas for 11 years

We live in the Seattle area. It's a pretty nice place. No income taxes!

But, my wife and I are thinking about moving to Texas or Florida. Neither of which have an income tax.

We like the warm weather and the economic opportunity. My wife has a home day care business and she wants to open a day care center. It's difficult to find rental space with a backyard for a playground in the Seattle area. It's much easier outside of the west coast.

I have an expensive house to sell and it will take some time to unload it, even at a big loss.

But our goal is to move to Texas or Florida whenever we can sell the house.

I can't handle Florida, the humidity is just too damn high!!!!! Now depending on where you go in Texas you can have dry, humid, cold or hot..... take your pick....

Now if you like fishing either one is outstanding...........

the humidity is just too damn high!!!!!

When I was in the Air Force, I live on the Gulf Coast for while. My wife is from the tropics. To us, the humidity is better than the cold rain every damn day.

Yea I know what you mean, I spent 3 years in England and it rained all winter it seemed like.......

The cloud cover would get so low you couldn't see the microwave communication antenna on top of a 100 foot tall tower

Yep, I've been to the U.K. many times. It's exactly like that in Seattle.

Seattle is a great place, but we're done.

Seattle is a great place, but we're done.

Can't blame you, 3 years in England was enough for me too.

I wouldn't mind going back though just so I can see some more of their history. We also still have friends that live there and would love to see them again, it's been almost 30 years since I was last there.....

The first house I lived in was over 350 years old, and the interior walls had somewhere between 8-10 layers of wallpaper on it.... the kind of stuff you see in the old Victorian movies...... The oldest daughter used to grab ahold of of loose ends and peel it back revealing the layers underneath...

Where were you at in the U.K. ???

When I was in the Air Force 30 years ago, I visited East Anglia (Mildenhall and Lakenheath) many times.

Over the 20+ years, my travels to the U.K. have mostly been to London. I've also been to Dublin several times, but that's not part of the U.K.

I really like London. In my view, London is the best big city I've been to, and I've been to a lot of big cities in the U.S. and around the world.

Where were you at in the U.K. ???

I was stationed at RAF Wethersfield from 1980-83, it's about 35-40 miles south of Lakenheath. I was in a CE Heavy Construction outfit called RED HORSE, went straight there from Tech School. It's close to Finchingfield, Braintree and Great Dunmow...

We didn't have any aircraft stationed there but some would visit us periodically, like some C-130s from Operation Eagle Claw.....
