The time for secrecy is nearing its end. This SHOT Show, Kel-Tec will be revealing its next ground-breaking product: the KSG (Kel-Tec Shotgun). The KSG is our first entry into the shotgun market. The size, shape and design are similar to the currently available Kel-Tec RFB rifle, but the KSG ejects downward, instead of forward. The KSG weighs 6.9lbs and is as compact as legally possible with a 26.1" overall length and an 18.5" cylinder bore barrel. Even with this compact size, the internal dual tube magazines hold an impressive 14 rounds of 12 gage 2-3/4" rounds (7 per tube). The simple and reliable pump action feeds from either the left or right tube. The feed side is manually selected by a lever located behind the trigger guard. The lever can be positioned in the center detent in order to easily clear the chamber without feeding another round from either magazine. A cross bolt style safety blocks the sear, and the pump release lever is located in front of the trigger guard. The pump includes an under Picatinny rail for the mounting of a forward grip, or a light or laser. The included top Picatinny sight rail will accept many types of optics or iron sights. Forward and rear sling loops are built in, and a basic sling is included. The soft rubber butt pad helps to tame recoil. MSRP has not been officially been set, but we are looking at the $800.00 range. (Photo @ link above)

Note that it doesn't switch automatically to the alternate tube, and the shooter comes up with an empty chamber, until he manually switches and pumps again. Other than that, it's very nice.
I recall a re-run of MASH I saw where this uber right winger named Colonel Flagg... Agreed. Still, it's better than having to reload after 5 shots, like the Mossberg I just bought. Not that I don't like my new Mossberg. I probably still would have bought it even if I had seen this one first. ;o)
When Kel-Tec announced the KSG shotgun, I was skeptical. I didn't think the gun would work right, and I really had my reservations about the gun. I did have a chance to play with one yesterday and today at SHOT, and I discovered something that I really don't like that makes the gun a poor choice for home defense -- in fact, it's something that could get you killed if you used this gun. The trigger doesn't reset. If you pull the trigger, and then run the slide while still holding the trigger to the rear like you would on a Remington 870 or a Mossberg, the trigger will simply go dead. We actually tried this on several models and it was the same on each demo gun. Here's video of me demonstrating what happens. To bring the gun back online after this malfunction, you'd have to run the action again, which would eject a perfectly good round in an action combat situation. Imagine that in a home defense situation -- you shoot one shot, run the action on your gun, and nothing happens. This is actually a major design flaw, and I'm really surprised that Kel-Tec would let something like that slip by. Because of this defect in the design of the Kel-Tec shotgun, I cannot recommend this to anyone who would consider it seriously for home defense. Yes, it's a neat toy, but I wouldn't bet my life on it when there are plenty of proven shotguns that don't have a dangerous design flaw built in to them. http://gunnuts.net/2011/01/20/kel-tec-ksg-shotgun-video/ It's not ready for prime time.

It seems that manually switching between the mag tubes makes it legal? in most (all?) states that have a 10 round limit. So that explains, that issue. I could see an aftermarket kit being made, where the mag follower pushes the switch to that tube when the follower reaches the back (empty). They should be able to fix the trigger reset problem. It could be great if they kind of design the tube switcher in, and just leave out the parts, and you can add them later.

Why would anyone hold the trigger down? Hoping for a faster rate of fire? This is a shotgun, it isn't an automatic weapon. I'm not so sure this is a malfunction. I'm inclined at the moment to think it's an operator error. Still waiting to hear from Kel Tec.

I'm starting to like it. Kel Tec's SU16's are great. As the video mentions, it's likely that a choke adapter for the threaded barrel, and various chokes will become available. That's a very nice feature, not available on most short barrel shotguns. Please post a review after you've shot it.

What do you plan to come up against where you believe you're going to need 14 rounds from a shotgun as opposed to 5?
I got to fire a friends SU-16 at the range. I liked it. I have the little P-11 that I bought for my wife, but she doesn't like the long and heavy trigger pull so I got her a Taurus Millennium Pro 9mm instead. It's a bit larger and heavier but she likes it much better.
I don't know, but it's a crazy world. You never know. Probably never really need it, but I love buying guns.
