A shortage of car parts from disaster-struck Japan has forced General Motors to temporarily shutter one of its factories in the United States, the firm said Thursday.

Production at an assembly plant in the southern state of Louisiana will halt for one week "due to a parts shortage resulting from the crisis in Japan," the Detroit, Michigan-based company said.

The 30-year old Shreveport factory employs 923 workers, producing the Chevrolet Colorado and GMC Canyon vehicles.

Before the announcement, experts had expressed fears that damage and blackouts in quake-hit areas of Japan could cause parts shortage around the world.

While Japan produces a vast range of cars each year, Japanese manufacturers are also a vital cog in the supply chain for US and European automakers.

"Like all global automakers, we will continue to follow the events in Japan closely to determine the business impact," GM said.

"We will resume production at Shreveport as soon as possible," it said.

"At all other plants in North America, we continue to run normal operations."

If their sales figures are an indicator, it will be quite awhile.

Most auto workers in Japan are unionized. If you do the math it works out to about $70K a year per Japanese employee.

Toyota Motor Corp., Honda Motor Co. and Nissan Motor Co., Japan’s three biggest automakers, agreed to pay higher bonuses and raise average base salaries next business year as the companies forecast record sales.

So lets just say for the hell of it that your statement is true...... (I personally could care less but......)

Why is it that Americas great car unions are outsourcing all of their work to the Japanese workers..... cheaper workforce maybe???? higher quality work maybe???? don't have to pay their pensions or benefits maybe??????

The point is the jobs are over there, not here where they belong..... Don't ya just love the "faked brotherhood" of the car unions...... Guess that's why they are becoming more irrelevant by the day!!!!!!

Americans unions are outsourcing?

American Management is outsourcing. Why? I can speculate because they only care about the short term because for the last 20 to 30 years the management class in America is compensated via stocks and short term stock results are what they crave. They don't care if a company using all American parts and labor makes money - Wall Street sees that as a boring stock that stays at the same price level. They want stock that goes up and up in the short term. Then they cash out and move on.

German manufacturing is also heavily unionized also. Japanese and Germans are still under the old company is my family for life kind of mentality and in America the company is there to make the manager rich so he can get out.
