Japan's quake-stricken nuke plant caught fire again Tuesday as a handful of heroic workers risked their lives inside to avert a full-scale nuclear meltdown.

Flames and smoke shot into the air over the Fukushima plant's No. 4 reactor, fueling fears about the worsening situation.

Radiation levels were too high for firefighters to get close enough to douse the blaze, said state broadcaster NHK.

Reactor No. 4 was idled for maintenance before Friday's earthquake and tsunami, but spent fuel rods stored there were overheating. The fire was seen near the spent fuel storage.

Even before the new fire, European Energy Commissioner Guenther Oettinger said Tokyo appeared to be losing control of the crisis.

"There is talk of an apocalypse and I think the word is particularly well chosen," he said after an emergency meeting of nuclear experts in Brussels.

The disaster was upgraded to a six on the seven-point international scale for nuclear accidents, ranking the accident worse than Three Mile Island and second only to the 1986 catastrophe at Chernobyl.

Get rid of the fucking numbers.

Another lie.

9 reactors with spent fuel rod ponds for each.

All going boom.

This is the real doom right here. Fuel rod fire confirmed by IAEA. The nuclear shit just hit the wind tunnel. Anonymous Coward User ID: 1134766 United States 3/15/2011 3:43 AM

You would think the Good Friday Earthquake in Alaska in 1964, just at the start of the nuclear power plant era, which was a 9.2 and lasted for over 4 minutes, would have given them a good idea of what might happen . . .

I won't argue with you but remember that 0-7 scale is an approved international convention by ALL countries with subscription for inspection and recommendations by the IAEA, so it is meaningful. Early on, Japan insisted the issue was a 3-4.

That is not good; Japan has attempted to cover-up the issue based on a prayer of hope that is/was meaningless.

Religions, on the other hand, have ceased trying to explain reality and instead, has gone head over heels into wishful thinking. This is why so many billions of people worship human gods like Jesus or elevate Buddha or Mohammed to god-level status. None of them can even begin to help us grasp the nature of yin/yang reality systems and how Nature works. Nay, the very ‘powers’ attributed to these human gods is to overcome the true nature of life and death, these are magician/human gods who overturn or control nature, they fly through the air, they don’t really die, they are UNNATURAL."

While I largely agree with you; it is not a religious matter at all; the US government has now conspired to cover-up the magnitude of the ISSUES confronting Japan particularly since #4 went nuclear today.

The governments are as secretive as the Roman Catholics in the rooms with their choir boys and nuns... "MUMS THE WORD."

I don't wish to overstate this, but FU'sake is FUBAR, and Japan is heading that way.

I move that we donate the Phelps clan to Japan. They could use goobers with picket signs saying the nuke disaster is God's way of paying them back for murdering dolphins and whales. ;-D

Hoping that Japan recovers soon, and is able resume sushi.

Heh, actually, they only stopped the slaughter when it was revealed that this meat no one was buying so it is highly tainted with poisons like methyl mercury which is a dangerous neurotoxin. It had such sluggush sales, it was donated to feed hungry school children for their school lunches.

So, you hate the Japanese you want to see them poisoned with their own industrial pollution. Somehow, I'm not surprised. ;-D

Please be sensitive to an extra-ordinary issue facing millions now; the issue is no longer confined to Japan. This stuff is going to cause all of us some grief and it is no laffing matter.

I am well aware of this Buck. The one who you really need to chide is Mad Dog.

I have long been very strongly against building nuclear plants precisely because I knew these tragedies would inevitably come of it.

I agree this is no laughing matter. For one thing, I live in Oregon, and we get a lot of atmospheric flow from that part of the planet.

Because of this disaster I am staying indoors and taking precautions. This has me very worried.

I have for decades taken to a diametrically opposed opinion. In order to feed the rising and HUGE population base: it takes much more than dumping residual carbon clusters into the aire.

Nuclear energy has problems and risks; but it is small compared continuing petroleum based products. I opt for more energy creation by nuclear based facilities; in America ( a lot of people don't know this little fact: the USA relies on 20% of the electrical production created by nuclear powerplants; in my way of thinking it should by over 50%.

The US is broke, one of our biggest allies is nothing more than a dying country now.
