Title: Cooling functions fail at Fukushima No. 2 nuclear reactor

TOKYO (Kyodo) -- Cooling functions at the quake-hit Fukushima No. 1 nuclear power plant's No. 2 reactor have failed, the plant operator said Monday, raising fears that the problem could lead to another explosion at the plant following a blast earlier in the day at its No. 3 reactor.

Tokyo Electric Power Co. reported the loss of cooling functions as an emergency to the government and began injecting seawater into the No. 2 reactor to cool it down and prevent the melting of its core due to overheating.

Similar measures have been taken at the plant's No. 1 and No. 3 reactors and explosions occurred at both reactors during the process, blowing away the roofs and walls of the buildings that house the reactors.

Chief Cabinet Secretary Yukio Edano said the water level in the No. 2 reactor has fallen sharply, nearly leaving upper sections of fuel rods exposed. He said, however, that radiation levels had not risen sharply at the plant.

TEPCO admitted the fuel rods in the No. 2 reactor were partially exposed and that the injection of seawater into the reactor was not leading to a rise in the water level.

The company has also begun work to depressurize the containment vessel of the No. 2 reactor by releasing radioactive steam, the government's Nuclear and Industrial Safety Agency said. Such a step is necessary to prevent the vessel from sustaining damage and losing its critical containment function.

The utility firm said a hydrogen explosion at the nearby No. 3 reactor that occurred Monday morning may have caused a glitch in the cooling system of the No. 2 reactor.

The nuclear agency said the 11:01 a.m. blast may also have caused damage to four fire pumps that were prepared for seawater injection operations.

At present, only one fire pump is working and TEPCO is placing priority on injecting water into the No. 2 reactor, although both the No. 1 and No. 3 reactors still need coolant water injections, according to the agency.

To prevent a possible hydrogen explosion at the No. 2 reactor, TEPCO said it will study opening a hole in the wall of the building that houses the reactor to release hydrogen.

The blast earlier in the day injured 11 people but the reactor's containment vessel was not damaged, with the government denying the possibility of a large amount of radioactive material being dispersed, as radiation levels did not jump after the explosion.

TEPCO said seven workers at the site and four members of the Self-Defense Forces were injured. The Defense Ministry said one SDF member suffered broken bones.

Since the magnitude 9.0 quake hit northeastern Japan last Friday, some reactors at the Fukushima No. 1 plant have lost their cooling functions, leading to brief rises in radiation levels. As a result, the cores of the No. 1 and No. 3 reactors have partially melted.

The government ordered residents within a 20-kilometer radius of the plant to evacuate Saturday in the wake of the initial blast at the plant's No. 1 reactor. A total of 483 people are still attempting to leave the area, according to the nuclear agency.

The agency ruled out the possibility of broadening the area subject to the evacuation order for now.

there was a report earlier of concerns around radiation leaks from spent fuel rods stored in ponds at the plant sites. the mess just keeps getting worse.

nbc now reporting that the containment vessel at #2 has been breached.

But #4 which is burning, is emitting extremely radioactive smoke that is spreading. That trumps a breached container mostly leaking radioactive water.

Not that either one is good.

Kan Warns of High Radiation Level

By WILLIAM SPOSATO TOKYO—Japanese Prime Minister Naoto Kan said Tuesday that there is a high risk of elevated levels of radiation from a reactor at the Fukushima nuclear power plant where an explosion occurred earlier in the day, and urged people within 30 kilometers of the plant to stay indoors.

"Substantial amounts of radiation are leaking in the area," Mr. Kan said on television at 11 a.m. in Tokyo. "We are making utmost efforts to prevent further explosions or the release of radioactive materials," he said.

Early Tuesday morning local time, authorities said that an explosion inside part of the No. 2 reactor at the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant appeared to have caused damage to the unit, and some staff were evacuated from the facility as radiation levels at the site rose sharply.

Mr. Kan began his address by asking people to be calm about the situation. He said that the government is doing everything it can to prevent further radiation leaks.

The Daiichi plant, located 160 miles northeast of Tokyo, was brought down by Friday's massive earthquake, which automatically shuts off the power generation by the reactors, while the tsunami damaged the generators designed to supply backup power.

The utility has been struggling since then to safely shut down the reactor cores at the three operating reactors at the facility.

Experts say the key to preventing the current crisis from turning into a full-blown disaster is to protect the reactor's containment structure, so that radiation is kept inside even after significant nuclear fission due to damage to the fuels. In the 1979 Three Mile Island incident in Pennsylvania, the containment structure remained intact, minimizing health effects on local residents.

fire in reactor #4

IF you want to be taken seriously.

How about a CITATION?

How about a SOURCE?

Or are we just supposed to take your word for it?

Then ...

"In REACTOR"?

What the hell does that even mean?

FIRE is impossible IN the REACTOR containment VESSEL without air.

In the surrounding containment BUILDING helium is what caused the explosions already reported. Which means squat unless the reactor vessel is breached.

Fire in the containment building is a very real possibility, but NOT inside the reactor vessel.

Such a fire MIGHT cause the reactor vessel problems.

BUT all you have done is confuse the issue even more.

All in all, your typical libTURD "accuracy" and "rigor" in "reporting".

I get the impression that you libTURDS would be more than happy if the reactor vessel was actually breached.

Not to mention how you creeps totally ignore the at least HALF of a MILLION Japanese who are suffering right now, or the tens of thousands of dead, of injured, and missing innocents.

Of course talking about them won't help you creeps kill nuclear power in America will it?

EVERYTHING is something for you creeps to use against America and the west isn't it?

I honestly despise you and your ilk. I can't understand why all decent folks don't feel the same way about you creeps.
