Title: Why I am not worried about Japan’s nuclear reactors.

I am writing this text (Mar 12) to give you some peace of mind regarding some of the troubles in Japan, that is the safety of Japan’s nuclear reactors. Up front, the situation is serious, but under control. And this text is long! But you will know more about nuclear power plants after reading it than all journalists on this planet put together.

There was and will *not* be any significant release of radioactivity.

By “significant” I mean a level of radiation of more than what you would receive on – say – a long distance flight, or drinking a glass of beer that comes from certain areas with high levels of natural background radiation.

I have been reading every news release on the incident since the earthquake. There has not been one single (!) report that was accurate and free of errors (and part of that problem is also a weakness in the Japanese crisis communication). By “not free of errors” I do not refer to tendentious anti-nuclear journalism – that is quite normal these days. By “not free of errors” I mean blatant errors regarding physics and natural law, as well as gross misinterpretation of facts, due to an obvious lack of fundamental and basic understanding of the way nuclear reactors are build and operated. I have read a 3 page report on CNN where every single paragraph contained an error.

We will have to cover some fundamentals, before we get into what is going on.

And Godzilla could come out of the Pacific now and I wouldn't be surprised.

"As a new 5 meter Tsunami is expected to hit Fukushima again, and residents are being advised to immediately get to higher ground, an explosion had been heard coming out of Reactor #3 at the power plant at 11:08 am local time. Supposedly this is a hydrogen explosion just like on Saturday, although the credibility of everyone involved at this point is zero. Dow Jones confirms that only the shell of the third reactor remains. Follow the latest at NHK in what is becoming the most surreal news night in history."

The Japan Pacific current strikes Alaska all the time before winding south down to the Americas. With all the released cesium, still rising, from the reactors into the Pacific currents, Mad Dog just might become an all new player on the Internet: Rude_Radiating_Salivating_Dog.

We shall see.

Sunday's eruption, which was the biggest volcanic activity in Shinmoedake in 52 years, caused widespread destruction and panic. The blast could be heard for miles, and shattered windows four miles away, the BBC reported. Hundreds of people fled the area as the volcano spewed debris, including hot ash and rocks, more than 6,000 feet in the air, according to BBC reports.

Those Japanese folks have a quintuple whammy: 1) a pre-existing failing economy for the last 15 years, 2) one the largest earthquakes in modern history, 3) nuclear power plants ready to burst, 4) tsunamis of killer levels and now a 5) a brand new volcanoe.

A couple of weeks ago, I was going to suggest GEICO Insurance against further problems in one's life but responsibly refrained the same. It just isn't funny anymore.

US Military is being evacuated right now from Japan. The Two Carriers on the east coast are booking out of dodge as fast as possible to deep sea.

Probably because the core of engineers know exactly what's going to happen next. Chain reaction.

I should also warn everyone that internet services everywhere are going to go into the shitter in the next couple of weeks, months. Japan is a major internet traffic hub and the primary central site for akamai appliances that cache the internet to shot gun DNS requests and data around the planet. So hopfully OSPF works as intended and the internet self heals but it's doubtful. I expect market feeds to be pretty fucked up tommorrow morning at open.

What bullshit.

Decay heat on the two reactors melted the fuel cells, releasing active fuel into the primary coolant. With the ruptured pipes, the fuel was then released into the atmosphere, entrained in the steam.

Bad news. While U-235 has a long half-life- which is good- when it's ingested or inhaled as particulate, it does particularly nasty things to live tissue.

The worst part will be activated fission-fragments that escape, with relatively short half-lives, before beta-decaying into more germane isotopes. If you were to inhale some of those buggers, the experience can have bad consequences.

The journalists don't know diddley shit about reactors. Neither does the author of this article- as soon as you get to the sentence "There was and will *not* be any significant release of radioactivity," it's obvious.

And yes, I DO know what I'm talking about... I trained on the Nautilus prototype reactor (S1W) and was plant operator on an S5W-equipped spook-boat. So yeah, I am qualified to analyze the situation...

The sea-water being pumped in, is to cool the fuel cells to prevent melt-down due to decay heat. The good news is that the majority source of the decay heat should subside within about 72 hours.

Socialist ass-hats think "There will be no more money when the U.S. dollar has no value, until that time we can keep printing more." And yes, that IS from LF's answer to Ben Bernanke, go65, leading disfunctional and delusional socialist of the forum.

And anyone 45 or younger might as well move now if you're in SoCal, cause not one fucking thing will be done to increase your odds of survival:

" In addition, the Japanese government had been repeatedly warned about seismic risks:

[..] the real embarrassment for the Japanese government is not so much the nature of the accident but the fact it was warned long ago about the risks it faced in building nuclear plants in areas of intense seismic activity. Several years ago, the seismologist Ishibashi Katsuhiko stated, specifically, that such an accident was highly likely to occur. Nuclear power plants in Japan have a "fundamental vulnerability" to major earthquakes, Katsuhiko said in 2007. The government, the power industry and the academic community had seriously underestimated the potential risks posed by major quakes.

Katsuhiko, who is professor of urban safety at Kobe University, has highlighted three incidents at reactors between 2005 and 2007. Atomic plants at Onagawa, Shika and Kashiwazaki-Kariwa were all struck by earthquakes that triggered tremors stronger than those to which the reactor had been designed to survive.

In the case of the incident at the Kushiwazaki reactor in northwestern Japan, a 6.8-scale earthquake on 16 July 2007 set off a fire that blazed for two hours and allowed radioactive water to leak from the plant. However, no action was taken in the wake of any of these incidents despite Katsuhiko's warning at the time that the nation's reactors had "fatal flaws" in their design[..] "

Hey moron.

This is what everyone with a brain has been saying since the start of this thing.

It's BAD, people are going to die because of their exposure to radiation. Unfortunately that's a given.

BUT this is NOT a Chernobyl type or scale disaster, and it CANNOT be because of the DIFFERENT REACTOR DESIGNS.

If you want to fear something that humanity has absolutely ZERO control of why don't you worry about earthquake and tsunamis moron?

BUT you libTURD whores make EVERYTHING political don't you whore?

While at least many tens of THOUSANDS of innocent Japanese are DEAD and missing from the quake and tsunamis you scum TRY to use this to stop nuclear development in the USA so we can remain the petro slaves of gooberments and people who use that money to KILL and destroy Americans and America.

What you libTURD filth are doing here is what you libTURD filth always do, which is to try to stampede the people with FEAR so you can "guide" them, it's what you filth do.

It's WHO you libTURD filth are.

You libTURDS are nothing but gibbering FILTH.

Spit ...

Living in mouth breather's empty noggins 24/7/365 totally rent free!
