Has anyone seen the 2006 movie "Idiocracy"? I haven't seen it yet, but I understand it describes a world 500 years in the future.

This is a sound clip from the movie - see if it sounds like your typical liberal enclave . . .

Joe: "For the last time, I'm pretty sure what's killing the crops is this Brawndo stuff."

Secretary of State: "But Brawndo's got what plants crave. It's got electrolytes."

Attorney General (Sara Rue): "So wait a minute. What you're saying is that you want us to put water on the crops."

Joe: "Yes."

Attorney General: "Water. Like out the toilet?"

Joe: "Well, I mean, it doesn't have to be out of the toilet, but, yeah, that's the idea."

Secretary of State: "But Brawndo's got what plants crave."

Attorney General: "It's got electrolytes."

Joe: "Okay, look. The plants aren't growing, so I'm pretty sure that the Brawndo's not working. Now, I'm no botanist, but I do know that if you put water on plants, they grow."

Secretary of Energy (Brendan Hill): "Well, I've never seen no plants grow out of no toilet."

Secretary of State: "Hey, that's good. You sure you ain't the smartest guy in the world?"

Joe: "Okay, look. You wanna solve this problem. I wanna get my pardon. So why don't we just try it, okay, and not worry about what plants crave?" Attorney General: "Brawndo's got what plants crave." Secretary of Energy: "Yeah, it's got electrolytes."

Joe: "What are electrolytes? Do you even know?"

Secretary of State: "It's what they use to make Brawndo."

Joe: "Yeah, but why do they use them to make Brawndo?" Secretary of Defense: "'Cause Brawndo's got electrolytes."

My browser won't run it.

But the assertion made according to your transcripts is false as will be any analogy. Most plants do NOT crave electrolytes of which the primary are sodium and chlorine. You should have turned it off as soon as you heard that and saved yourself some time.

I think the movie is satire . . .

I don't know I can't run it. But in order for something to be funny or satirical, it (at least for me) has to have a ring of truth and accuracy.

The movie is about a future where people are of your level of intelligence (i.e. lack there of). The Brawndo scene simply is a display of their lack of an ability to think (a concept anybody familiar with you could easily relate to).

Yes, it's a movie based on the idea that the fox news crowd becomes the majority.

You said you haven't seen the movie - you might want to watch it before commenting on it further. In the movie, the only source of news for the idiots is Fox.

You missed my point about "boogey-men"

You on the Left seem to need to have those. First it was Reagan. (Actually, it was probably Nixon before that. He committed "original sin" by going after Alger Hiss - and no matter what he did after that - creation of EPA, wage and price controls, making nice with China - you wouldn't forgive him)

Then it was J. Danforth Quayle. Then Newt. Then Bush Jr. Then Palin. Then Bachman. Then Fox News.

Okay - so Fox news (in your opinion) is the worst thing to come down the pike. What do YOU like? MSNBC? Mother Jones?

C'mon - you can do it. Be FOR something. Tell us what you like.

(by the way, if Fox News is still around in 500 years, it must be doing something right. Even empires don't last that long.)

If you don't like the "boogey-man" then when are you referring us to a movie that makes fun of those who get their info from Fox news?

Did you not realize that before you posted the thread?

No. I had never heard of this movie.

In post #12 I explained how I came to learn of it.

Have you ever watched the "Tonight" show where Jay Leno does his "Jay Walking" segments? The idiots that appear there (who typically consider themselves "educated" but don't even know when the US Civil War was fought. Hell, most are doing good to put it in the correct century) reminded me of the idiots in the sound clip. And news flash: Since the Tonight Show eminates from Los Angeles (not known for being over-run with conservatives), it's a safe bet that the majority of the "idiots" are libs.

But back to your question: Even if I had realized that ultimately Fox News was the "target" - why would it have mattered? If humor and satire is clever, can it not be appreciated even if it might not line up totally with one's worldview?

I don't know if the movie itself is clever, but the clip I heard was. I'll reserve judgement on the entire movie until I see it.

One more thing to buttress my point: Not long after I got satellite TV, I was scanning the guide and saw a movie that intrigued me. (It's been a while, so I may have the name wrong - I think it was called something like "CSA - Confederate States of America."

I read the synopsis, and it was a movie that speculated what would have happened if the South had won the Civil War. That looked intriging, so I set up my DVR to record it.

The movie was done as a "Ken Burns" like TV documentary, taking the viewer from 1865 (when the South won the war) to the present. The first half or so WAS very imaginative and (there's that word again) clever.

But the second half became preachy and PC. I was disappointed - what was a great idea had become bogged down. Then, when the credits ran, I saw why.

It was produced by Spike Lee - a racist to the core. Oh well.

But my point is - I could STILL see humor and imagination even from someone whom I mostly (hell, probably 99.9 percent) disagree with.

Isn't that being "liberal" (old meaning)?
