The continuing poor economic situation really got me thinking about what America is all about and what it means to be an American.

I don't like to write about my family, but given the ugly situation in Wisconsin and elsewhere, I feel the urgent need to write about my wonderful wife and how she is realizing her dreams in America.

When I got divorced a few years ago, a friend advised me to take a broader perspective on potential partners than women in my local area. During my career, I've traveled the world many times and I've met a lot great people. So, I took his advice. I found a great woman in the Philippines.

We were married in May, 2007.

My wife opened a home day center in the fall of 2009. She found the regulations, she passed her state inspections, she acquired customers, and she served her customers well. Her customers love her.

In her first year in business, my wife netted over $40K. Not bad for a girl from the third world in her first year as a business woman in America.

We are now saving so that she can open a large day care center. She has dreams of opening many day centers. She will do it.

In her short time in America, my wife already knows that your dreams can come true. She has seen it. She has done it. Her dreams are coming true every day. She is thankful for being in America. Nothing will stop her.

Unfortunately, American leftists just don't get it. They are so tied up in their income distribution, collective bargaining nonsense that they can't see the real America. To them, the entire concept of America is lost in the haze of political nonsense.

My wife grew up in a one room bamboo hut. She picked root crops for her grandmother's family business. Her daily shower was pouring a bucket of water over her head.

Now she is a successful business woman in America.

In spite of the county's problems, America is still the land of dreams and opportunities. My wife has demonstrated this.

All I can say is: Shame on the lazy. Shame on the government bureaucrats. Shame on the political left. Shame on them all for trying to destroy this country and what America represents to humanity across the world.

Shame, shame, shame

My wife is thankful and you are angry.

Even though that you and I agree on many things, this is our difference -- you are angry and we are taking care of our future.

Sorry, I'm not angry, I'll leave that to the right-wingers who would start asking about the citizenship/immigration status of your wife.

All I'm pointing out is that liberals generally favor giving people the tools to help them succeed - education, health care, loans, etc., while conservatives generally favor concentrating wealth in the hands of the rich (though they do favor spending trillions outside the U.S. on military adventures).

Since January 3, 2011, Republicans have controlled the power of the purse.

but that's because they work harder. Even Jwpegler will admit that broker making $150 million a year is a far more productive member of society then someone who starts their own small business since the rich people create all the jobs.

Again, you haven't been anywhere so you don't know squat.

The Philippines has plenty of government, but most of the wealth and power is concentrated in their capital (Manila) because everything is politicized.

The same thing is happening in the U.S. Most of the wealth and power are being concentrated in the District of Columbia (and NYC) because the left has politicized the economy and forced businesses to go groveling to politicians to either beg for handouts or fight the latest attempt by politicians to rape and pillage them.

The left likes to talk about how America is becoming a third world country. And it is, but not for the reasons the brain dead believes. It's the left's fault that this is happening.

In any case you filthy libertarians claim that if there was no govt the population would thrive but its the opposite. Without govt services areas in America would look like rural Philippines. For example if not for the govt built and run Tenn. Valley Authority was not started, that whole region would be in the dark since the people there are poor and rural and were not attractive customers to private enterprise.

Remember that the Phillipines is a US Protectorate. So what goes on there generally has our blessing until the pot boils over, then like Mexico we drain off the steam until the next regime creates the same probblems.

Those living on the outer islands generally see squat. During the Marcos era they were often at the mercy of roving government thugs taking their land, and imprisoning or killing those who objected. Which led to a fairly large migration to the US, with all expenses paid too, including education, housing, cars and a job. And generally able to work at reduced salaries compared to others in the same profession since they were receiving out right US gov handouts.... free gratis.

But heh, we were making the world safe for democracy by enabling dictators and reaping the spoils, so all was good.

After they ousted Marcos the Phillipines kicke dthe Americans out though I don't know if business ties are still as strong (fruit) or if the Japanese or Chinese (both Red and Taiwanese) have taken over the American business roles.

With that said, the system of corrupt crony colonialist rule continues even if the USA is no longer calling the shots.

You are missing the point as usual,

I didn't say the Philippines has too much government is rural areas.

I said that the Philippines has a politicized economy and therefore most of the wealth and power is concentrated in one city -- Manila.

This is exactly what is happening in the U.S. -- the entire county is suffering but metro-D.C. is booming.

This is a direct consequence of the left politicizing the American economy over the last several decades.

Politicizing the economy didn't work in the Soviet Union, it didn't work in the third world, and it's not working here.

Government bureaucrats are not "little guys". Government unions are the most power political pressure groups in America. They dump hundreds of millions of dollars into campaigns every year to elect their own bosses (leftist politicians) who then collude with them to force people to pay for their rotten and destructive monopolies. Any and all attempt at even the tiniest bit of reform gets met with bitter opposition and millions of dollars funded by forced union dues.

The real people getting screwed in Wisconsin are the same people getting screwed everywhere in the U.S. Namely, taxpayers who are forced to pay government monopolies and children who are forced to suffer in those monopolies.

This cancer that has spreed throughout society needs to be cut out and radiated.

So you say.

I have private sector garbage collection today in Redmond, WA. Let me tell you how this works:

Government garbage collection:

Three guys on a truck -- one driver, two on back. They mosey through the neighborhood at a snail's pace, banging up garbage cans, making all kinds of racket

Private garbage collection:

One guy on a truck -- the driver. He zips up to a can, pushes a button, two mechanical arms come down, which picks up the can and empties it.

This guy by himself zips through the neighborhood at 4 times the pace of the government garbage collectors.

I don't even have to buy my own can. They supply the can that works with their automated system.

It costs me about $15 bucks a month for a huge can plus an even larger recycle can. They also have one for yard waste that I don't use. They collect the garbage even on holidays.

The government doesn't innovate. The government isn't efficient. The government doesn't care about service, cost, quality, or happy customers. Why? Because the government is a coercive monopoly and so are the unions that staff government jobs.

We have to blow apart all of these government monopolies that crept up in the 20th century. Schools, fire protection, garbage collection, even roads and parks inside of neighborhoods. All of these things are already being done in various parts of the country.

It's best to play these at the same time to get the full effect.

We have the same system - we pay the city and the city contracts out.

The city here contracted some smaller private company, but the service really sucks. They are always spilling garbage everywhere on the streets and missing the cheaply made, unwieldy and not well engineered cans (garbage sticks inside due to their configuration) that they supply. Waste Management was our company until a few years ago.... they seemed pretty good but I guess they weren't fast enough with the kickbacks.

My only complaint is coming home to find an overturned bin in my driveway.
