CHARLOTTE, N.C. The impact of hydroelectric dams on a rare ancient fish is holding up relicensing for Duke Energy's facilities on the Catawba and Wateree Rivers in the two Carolinas. The Charlotte Observer reported that the battle has put conservation groups on the side of the energy company, which plans to spend millions of dollars in conservation and recreation improvements on the waterways as soon as its license to operate the dams is renewed.
On the other side is the National Marine Fisheries Service. That agency has not yet signed off on Duke's license and won't say whether the dams will or will not hurt the endangered shortnose sturgeon that once freely swam up the rivers of the Carolina Piedmont.
Federal biologists say they're obligated to see whether the sturgeon can reclaim its former territory.
